What Is a Deck-Mount Grab Bar on a Walk-In Tub?

A deck-mount grab bar is the chrome stainless steel grab bar that bolts through the tub deck on site, positioned for entering, exiting and standing up from the seat. It ships loose in its own kit, and it has one rule that protects your shell and your warranty: the large metal washer must go under the shell, because installing the bar without it can crack the acrylic and voids the warranty.

How It Works

The kit contains one chrome bar, two escutcheons, four rubber washers, two large metal washers, two bolts and an Allen wrench. Each bolt is assembled in this order: metal washer, then rubber washer, up through the shell from underneath, then another rubber washer, then the escutcheon, and threaded loosely into the bar. Then tighten both with the supplied Allen wrench. The metal washer spreads the load across the acrylic. Skipping the metal washer is one of the installation choices that void your warranty. What to Know as an Owner

On delivery day, find the grab bar bag in the parts box and keep the two large metal washers with the bar; what is in the crate lists every loose item. Add extra bars to the walls around the tub, anchored into the framing, rather than drilling into the tub, since any alteration not done by Ella is excluded from coverage. Following ADA guidelines is good practice: horizontal wall bars 33 to 36 inches from the tub floor with a vertical bar near the door; ADA and accessibility answers has more on placement. Suction-cup grab bars are not recommended. For a ticket, have your model, serial number and a photo of the bar ready.

Common Questions

Do Ella walk-in tubs come with grab bars?
Most models include a chrome stainless steel grab bar, and many include both a deck-mount and a wall-mount bar. The Petite and Companion include a deck-mount bar only, and the Tub4Two and LayDown tubs ship without grab bars. Your model's spec sheet lists what is included.
What happens if the grab bar is installed without the metal washer?
The bolt load concentrates on a small area of acrylic, which can crack the shell, and that damage is not covered because the kit instructions warn against it. Always place the large metal washer under the shell, then the rubber washer, before feeding the bolt up through the deck.
Can I add another grab bar to the tub itself?
Please add extra bars to the surrounding walls instead, anchored into the studs, since drilling into the tub is an alteration that is excluded from warranty coverage. Ella's add-on wall bars come in polished and brushed stainless finishes and several sizes; availability changes, so check with your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850.
What parts should be in the grab bar kit?
One chrome bar, two escutcheons, four rubber washers, two large metal washers, two bolts and an Allen wrench. Count them before install day, and if anything is missing, photograph the bag and open a ticket at ellasbubbles.com/support with your model and serial number.
