Ella TransferXXL 36x55: The Bariatric Transfer Tub With the Widest Seat

The Ella TransferXXL is the bariatric model of the wheelchair-accessible Transfer family and the largest low-threshold walk-in tub Ella's Bubbles makes. Its actual size is 36 inches wide by 55 inches long by 40 inches tall, and it carries a 29 inch wide molded seat, the widest seat in the entire lineup. It uses the same 36 inch wide L-shaped outward-swing door and two-latch gear and shaft lock as the rest of the family, offers the triple therapy packages, and includes a 5 inch extension panel for a 60 inch alcove.

The Correct Name Is TransferXXL

Some older schematic copies and one scanned spec title read "XXXL," and older conversations sometimes use that spelling. There is no separate XXXL model. The current product page, the spec sheet URL and the newest foot-massage schematic all print TransferXXL, and the "XXXL" wording refers to this same 36 by 55 tub. If your paperwork says XXXL, it applies to your TransferXXL.

Dimensions and Capacity

  • Actual size: 36 by 55 by 40 inches. Seat width: 29 inches.
  • Comparison chart interior figures: 17 3/4 inch seat length, 48 1/8 inch interior length, 17 3/4 inches from seat to overflow, 17 inches from seat to footwell, and a 23 by 18 inch footwell.
  • Water: 132 gallons unoccupied, 55 to 75 gallons occupied, per the current spec sheet.
  • Weight: 220 pounds net, 300 pounds shipping, in a 38 by 57 by 50 inch crate.
  • Door opening angle: 172 degrees, so keep the floor in front clear.

Ella's Bubbles recommends the TransferXXL for large body types needing maximum interior space. In a factory presentation video the presenter describes the seat as a full 28 inches wide; the spec sheet's 29 inch figure governs.

Door and Included Hardware

The L-shaped door is plastic composite and tempered glass, hinged to swing outward and away from the seat so nothing sits between a wheelchair and the seat. It locks with the two-latch gear and shaft mechanism hidden under an acrylic cover. Included with the tub: a stainless steel frame with adjustable leveling legs, a removable front apron with two access panels, one reversible end panel plus the 5 inch extension panel, a chrome deck-mounted and wall-mounted grab bar, and two 2 inch four-port PVC drains with two end caps, two overflows and two cable openers with extended chrome handles. The extension kit for the TransferXXL is listed in the owner's manual at 55 inches long by 36 inches wide with two stainless L brackets and the family bolt set.

Packages and Electrical

  1. Air + Hydro (LED chromatherapy included)
  2. Air + Hydro + Hydro Independent Foot Massage (LED included)
  3. Air + Hydro + Microbubble (LED included)
  4. Hydro + Hydro Independent Foot Massage (LED included)
  5. Hydro Massage + Microbubble (LED included)
  6. Hydro Massage (no LED)

The hydro pump is 7 amps with an in-line heater, ozone sterilization and an intensity dial; the two-pump foot massage layout uses 5 amp and 7 amp pumps; the air pump is 4.5 amps, three-speed with auto purge; the microbubble pump is 1 HP at 7.3 amps. The Hydro packages list 22 jets (16 seat, 6 foot) and the Air + Hydro package lists 17 air jets and 11 hydro jets. Dedicated GFCI-protected 115/120 V, 60 Hz lines are required, and the multi-pump and triple packages need more than one 20 amp circuit; your electrician should work from the schematic for your package. A heated seat and backrest and a digital controller are optional. The spec sheet headlines the five-piece fast-fill faucet, up to 18 gallons per minute at 60 PSI, with two 5 foot 3/4 inch supply lines and a pull-out hand shower.

Watch the TransferXXL

This video, titled with the older XXXL spelling, is the TransferXXL. It presents the width of the tub and seat, the outward swing of the L-shaped door and the open-sided seat that makes a transfer possible.

TransferXXL Versus Big4One

Both are bariatric single-seat tubs with outward-swing doors. The Big4One is 33 1/8 inches wide by 66 inches long with a 24 inch seat, a U-shaped door with a three-latch lock and no extension panel; it is the longer soak. The TransferXXL is wider at 36 inches, shorter at 55 inches, has the 29 inch seat, the L-shaped door with the two-latch lock and an open side for wheelchair transfers, and it fits a 60 inch alcove with its 5 inch extension panel. Choose by whether width and transfer access or length matter more to the bather.
