Touchpad or push button controls not responding: checks, repair, and replacement

Updated September 2026

When the touchpad or push button controls are not responding on your Ella walk-in tub, the fix is usually simple. Ella tubs come with either on and off push controls or a digital touchpad on the deck. Push buttons work on air pressure, so a loose air tube or a small air lock is the most common cause, and a digital touchpad that has failed can be replaced as a part without replacing any pumps. Both procedures are shown below, along with the checks that tell you whether the control, the control box or the power supply is the real problem.

First, Confirm What Is Normal

  • Air massage buttons cycle speeds: one press for high, a second for medium, a third for low, and a fourth press turns the air off.
  • The chromatherapy light cycles colors with one press, repeated presses select a specific color, and holding the button for about two seconds turns the light off.
  • About 20 minutes after you turn the air massage pump off, the Auto Purge starts automatically and runs for 120 seconds to blow leftover water out of the air lines. It cannot be interrupted, stops on its own, and is normal even if it starts while you are still in the tub.
  • Some models ship with unlabeled push controls. Identify them by function: Water is hydro massage, Air is the air massage, Micro is microbubble, Light is the LED.
  • Press gently. A palm press is enough; pressing too hard or too deep can damage the mechanism.

The full operating guide for both control styles is in push button controls versus the digital touchpad.

Push Button Controls: How They Work and What to Check

Push Button Control Issues and Repair
Chapters in this video
  1. 0:00 Pneumatic Push Button Controls The video introduces how push button controls work using pneumatic pressure and a red connection tube.
  2. 0:32 Activating the Relay Switch Pushing the button creates pneumatic pressure, which activates the relay switch inside the control box.
  3. 1:05 Relieving an Air Lock The video demonstrates how to relieve an air lock by disconnecting the red tube from the control box.
  4. 1:20 Reconnecting the Tube After reconnecting the tube, pushing the button should produce an audible clicking sound from the control box.

Push button controls work with pneumatic pressure. Pushing the button creates air pressure in a small red tube, which activates the relay switch inside the control box that powers the pump or light. Watch: Push Button Control Issues and Repair with chapters and a full transcript.

  1. Make sure the red tube is securely connected to the control box.
  2. Make sure there is a tight connection at the push button itself, secured with the locking nut. On Standard and Zen tubs this air pipe connection through the shell with its back nut is a known loose point from installation, so check it first.
  3. If a button is stuck in the down position, that is an air lock. Disconnect the red tube from the control box and the button will pop up. Reconnect the tube at the control box.
  4. When you push the button you should hear an audible clicking sound inside the control box. That click is the relay being activated. A click with no pump points to the pump or its cord; see pump or massage system not working.

If a button housing has come loose from the deck, it can be resealed: remove the button collar carefully with a flat edge so you do not scratch the tub surface, remove the collar and the button, place a thin bead of silicone caulk around the rubber gasket and smooth it for complete coverage, replace the button, snap the collar back on, and clean any excess with denatured alcohol. Replacement buttons and the ports each hose belongs on are covered in push-button air hoses, ports and replacement.

Replacing a Digital Touchpad

Digital Touchpad Replacement
Chapters in this video
  1. 0:00 Replacing Your Digital Touchpad This video explains how to replace an Ella's Bubbles walk-in tub digital touchpad.
  2. 0:12 Removing the Old Touchpad The technician carefully cuts the seal around the old pad and pries it away from the tub.
  3. 0:44 Connecting the New Touchpad The technician connects the new touchpad and temporarily reconnects power to test its function.
  4. 1:03 Installing and Sealing the Touchpad The technician removes the backing from the tape, sets the new unit in place, and seals the edges with silicone.

Before ordering a pad, confirm the control box has power: the green LED on the box should be lit, and if the whole pad is dark with the LED off, the problem is the outlet, GFCI or box rather than the pad. Replacement touchpads are matched to your tub, so please order with your serial number through a ticket at ellasbubbles.com/support. Then: Watch: Ella's Bubbles: Digital Touchpad Replacement with chapters and a full transcript.

  1. Disconnect power to the tub and protect the surface of your tub before working.
  2. Carefully cut the silicone seal around the edges of the old pad, taking care not to cut the surface of the tub.
  3. With a straight edge, carefully work your way around the pad, prying it away from the tub. This may take several tries because the pad is siliconed into the tub.
  4. Lift the old pad out and disconnect the plug.
  5. Take the new pad and reconnect the plug. Push firmly for a good connection.
  6. Before seating the pad, temporarily reconnect the power to the tub to make sure the new pad is functioning correctly.
  7. Remove the backing of the two-sided tape already attached to the new unit to expose the adhesive, set the new unit into place, and press firmly.
  8. Seal all of the edges with white silicone and smooth the edges. Your new touchpad is now good to go.

Still Nothing at All?

If no control responds, verify that your dedicated GFCI breaker has not tripped and reset it. If the GFCI will not reset or fails its test, turn the power off and do not use the tub until an electrician corrects it, since that indicates a ground current condition. If power is confirmed and several functions still misbehave, follow the control box reset guide, and if the green LED on the box never lights, see control box has no power light.

Common Questions

The button is stuck down and nothing happens. What do I do?
That is an air lock, which is a common cause for push button controls not responding. To relieve an air lock, pull the small red air tube off its fitting at the control box, which will allow the button to pop up. Then, push the red tube firmly back onto the control box with a twist-and-push motion to ensure a secure connection.
I hear a click when I press the button but the pump does not start.
The audible clicking sound you hear when pressing the push button indicates that the button and its relay are working correctly. If the pump does not start, check that the pump for that specific function is securely plugged in and that its electrical circuit is live. Also, confirm that the water level in the tub is above the highest jets, as some pumps require sufficient water to operate.
A pump keeps running and the button will not turn it off.
If a pump continues to run and the push button will not turn it off, first pull the small air tube off the button and blow gently through it to clear any obstruction. Then, refit the tube securely at both ends and try the control box reset procedure. If the pump still runs continuously, switch the circuit off at the breaker and open a support ticket, as this symptom can indicate a relay that is stuck closed.
The small air hose keeps falling off the button.
If the small air hose keeps falling off the push button, reseat it fully onto the barb and tighten the locking nut located behind the button. A common reason for this issue is an air hose that is cut too short, causing it to pull itself off. The support team can send extra tubing to allow for proper routing with sufficient slack.
My digital pad will not light up at all.
If your digital touchpad will not light up at all, first check your dedicated GFCI breaker and reset it if it has tripped. Then, verify that the green LED on the control box is lit, indicating the box has power. If the control box has power but the entire digital pad remains dark, the pad itself or its plug connection is the likely fault, and a replacement touchpad can be ordered by providing your tub's serial number.
Can I upgrade from push buttons to a digital touchpad, or move the controls to the wall?
Control positions are fixed by the factory-drilled shell and cannot be relocated. A digital controller is standard on the ShaK, Big4One and two-seat tubs and available with some air plus hydro packages at order time; ask your Ella dealer or the team before ordering.
What is the extra button with a flame on it?
On tubs ordered with the heated seat and backrest, that keypad runs the seat heater: press once to start, again to stop; it preheats for 10 to 15 minutes and switches itself off after 20 minutes, which is normal. If your order did not include a heated seat, send a photo of the button with your serial number and the team will identify it.
Do the lights on the digital pad stay on all the time?
Yes. The backlight stays on whenever the tub has power, and no sleep setting is documented, so a pad that goes completely dark means power or the display connection has been lost. If your pad behaves differently, send a photo with your serial number and the team will confirm what is normal for your unit.
The main pump will not shut off, or the microbubble button only works sometimes. What causes that?
Usually an airlock in the pneumatic line. Find the white nut where the red air hose meets the pump next to the power cable, unscrew it, pull the hose off the nipple for a second so room air enters, then push it back on and retighten. At the control box, make sure each hose nipple is straight and the hose is pushed on snug, because a hose barely hanging on causes the same symptom.
How do I tell whether a dead button is the button or the control box?
Press the button and listen for a faint click from the relay in the control box. A click with no pump means no power is reaching that circuit, so check the breaker and GFCI. No click means the air hose is loose or airlocked. To isolate a button, swap its air tube with a working button's tube at the control box; if the fault follows the button, the button or its nipple is cracked and a replacement button is sent, and if the fault stays with the port, the control box is the issue.
Can the push button be serviced from the top without pulling the tub?
Yes. Pop the trim ring and the button internals lift out through the deck. The digital controller is siliconed to the deck and can be lifted by breaking the silicone. If a digital keypad is dark, check the small wire from the keypad to the blue control box and confirm the green light at the box is on.
