Microbubble System Not Working: Buzzing, No Cloudiness, Big Bubbles, and the Pressure Tank

Updated September 2026

When the microbubble system is not working on your Ella's Bubbles tub, the fastest way to sort it out is to follow the path the system itself uses: the Micro push control sends an air signal to a relay switch in the control box, the relay powers a 1 HP water pump, the pump pushes water through the microbubble pressure tank, and the supersaturated water returns through a single port in the tub, turning the water from clear to cloudy. If the button does nothing, the pump buzzes without any cloudiness, or you see large bubbles instead of a milky cloud, one link in that chain needs attention. Here is what you can check yourself and when to hand the job to the technical team.

MicroBubble Therapy Infusion

The video shows normal operation: one touch of the Micro button starts the system, billions of microbubbles are generated from a single port, the water turns from clear to cloudy, and a second touch turns the system off. That clear-to-cloudy change is the test to use: if the water clouds, the system is working. Our Infusion microbubble therapy article explains what the therapy does and which tubs offer it. How the System Is Built

  • Control: a pneumatic push button (an air switch) labeled Micro. Some Transfer and legacy models ship with unlabeled push controls.
  • Relay switch: inside the control box; the air signal pushes the relay, and the relay powers the pump.
  • Pump and pressure vessel: a 1 HP, 7.3A pump with a pressure tank and agitator valve (10A on the Standard60 H2 system).
  • Delivery: one jet. LayDown tubs run the optional single-jet system on one dedicated 20A, 120V GFCI line; the Hydro + Microbubble package on stainless steel and outward-swing tubs runs on two dedicated 20A, 120V lines.

Checks You Can Do in a Few Minutes

  1. Confirm the tub actually has the microbubble package. Microbubble therapy is optional on most models, and the owner's manual describes every package, so a Micro button in the manual does not mean your tub was built with one. Look behind the access panel for the microbubble pressure tank. No tank means the system was not ordered; your serial number lets the team confirm.
  2. Fill above the port before you press anything. Never run any pump before water covers all jets and ports; running a pump dry causes permanent damage that is not covered. Fill levels for every therapy are in how much water before turning on the jets.
  3. Check power. Confirm the breaker and the GFCI outlet for the microbubble line are on and reset. A green LED on the control box shows power is reaching it. On a two-line package, the microbubble pump is on its own dedicated line, so check that outlet specifically.
  4. Check the air tube. The tube from the Micro button must be pushed firmly onto its fitting on the control box with a twist-and-push motion, and the hose and lock nut behind the button itself must be secure. Our pump not working article walks through both connections step by step.
  5. Reset the control box. If several functions misbehave at once, or the system stopped after a power event, follow our control box reset guide.
  6. Standard60 H2 system only: weak output usually means the blue tank needs fresh distilled water. Tap water is not suitable for that tank. See our H2 microbubble article.

Buzzing with No Cloudiness, or Large Bubbles

Microbubbles are smaller than 50 microns, so a working system makes the whole bath look milky rather than producing visible bubbles. Two symptoms mean the pump has power but the system is not doing its job:

  • The pump hums or buzzes but the water never clouds. Turn the system off and do not keep cycling it. First confirm the water level, then check for an air lock at the pump connection and that the pressure tank fittings are tight. If it still only buzzes, this is a pump or pressure-tank issue the technical team needs to diagnose with your serial number. A pump that has been tripping the breaker and now rattles belongs in the same category and should stay off.
  • Large bubbles after a few seconds instead of a fine cloud. First confirm the port is fully submerged and that you are running the microbubble system on its own. You can run hydro jets and microbubbles together, but for the full effect we recommend using microbubble therapy by itself. Large bubbles rather than a fine cloud usually mean the tank is not holding pressure or the agitator valve needs attention, so if the water still does not turn cloudy, open a ticket with a short video of what you see.

This is what a healthy microbubble fill looks like: the whole bath turns milky white rather than showing visible bubbles.

Epsom Salts and Bath Products

Please do not run the microbubble system (or the hydro jets) while Epsom salts are in the water. Enjoy salts as a soak after your therapy session, fully dissolved, then drain the tub promptly and wipe the chrome finishes, since salts can spot or discolor chrome. Bath bombs and oily products are not recommended in any jetted tub because they can affect the mechanics and clog the system; the full guidance is in Epsom salts, bath bombs and oils. Debris or specks that appear when the microbubbles run usually clear with the same monthly vinegar flush used for the jets.

Pressure Tank and Other Replacement Parts

Replacement parts for the microbubble system, including the pressure tank, are available through the parts team. If a pressure tank has split or is leaking, turn the system off at the breaker and open a ticket with your serial number, photos of the tank, and a description of what happened. The parts team identifies the correct tank for your tub from the serial number and arranges the replacement. The microbubble system is supporting equipment under the Lifetime Limited Warranty, so covered parts go through the normal warranty verification with photos of the defect and a description of the problem, as described in how to start a warranty claim.

"All Sales Are Final for Microbubble Units"

Invoices for tubs ordered with microbubble therapy carry the line "ALL SALES ARE FINAL FOR MICROBUBBLE UNITS." That means a microbubble tub cannot be returned or exchanged once purchased. It does not change your warranty: the microbubble equipment is covered as supporting equipment under the same terms as the rest of the tub.

Common Questions

The Micro button buzzes but there are no bubbles. What should I do?
Turn off the microbubble system immediately if the Micro button buzzes but no cloudiness appears. This indicates the 1 HP water pump has power but is not producing microbubbles. First, confirm the water level is above the single return port and check that the pressure tank fittings are tight, then open a ticket with your serial number so the technical team can diagnose the pump or pressure tank issue.
The water does not turn cloudy at all.
If the water in your Ella's Bubbles tub does not turn cloudy when the microbubble system is on, first confirm that your tub actually has the optional microbubble package by looking for the microbubble pressure tank behind the access panel. Ensure the tub is filled above the single return port, check that the dedicated microbubble line's breaker and GFCI outlet are on, and confirm the green LED on the control box is lit. Next, reseat the air tube firmly onto its fitting on the control box with a twist-and-push motion, and if several functions misbehave or the system stopped after a power event, reset the control box.
Big bubbles appear after a few seconds. Is that normal?
No, large bubbles appearing after a few seconds instead of a fine milky cloud is not normal for the microbubble system. Microbubbles are smaller than 50 microns, so a working system makes the entire bath look milky. Ensure the single return port is fully submerged and run the microbubble system on its own for the full effect. If a fine milky cloud never develops, the pressure tank may not be holding pressure or the agitator valve needs attention; open a ticket with a short video of what you see.
Should the microbubble port be under water before I press the button?
Yes, the microbubble port must be under water before you press the Micro button. Always fill your Ella's Bubbles tub until the single return port and all jets are covered before starting any pump. Running a pump dry causes permanent damage that is not covered by the warranty.
Can I run the hydro jets and the microbubbles at the same time?
You can run the hydro jets and the microbubble system at the same time in your Ella's Bubbles tub. However, the milky effect of the microbubble therapy is strongest when the microbubble system runs by itself. Many owners choose to run the hydro jets first and then activate the microbubbles on their own afterward to experience the full effect.
My pressure tank split. How do I replace it?
If your microbubble pressure tank has split or is leaking, immediately power the system off at the breaker. Open a ticket with your serial number, photos of the damaged tank, and a description of what happened. The pressure tank is a replaceable part, and the parts team will identify the correct tank for your specific tub from the serial number and arrange the replacement under the Lifetime Limited Warranty for supporting equipment.
Should there be a piece inside the microbubble port opening?
The microbubble port is a single delivery jet, and its internal components can vary by model. To confirm whether anything is missing inside your microbubble port opening, please send a close-up photo along with your tub's serial number to the technical team.
The microbubble unit will not turn on but the air purge still runs. Why?
The air purge belongs to the air massage system, which operates on its own control, so it can run even if the microbubble line is not functioning. If your microbubble unit will not turn on but the air purge still runs, first check the dedicated microbubble outlet and its GFCI. Then, inspect the air tube from the Micro button to ensure it is pushed firmly onto its fitting on the control box with a twist-and-push motion, and that the hose and lock nut behind the button itself are secure.
The microbubble pump runs a few seconds, stops, and keeps cycling. What is wrong?
A stuck impeller. The stainless pump with the black housing overloads and rests when its impeller cannot turn, then tries again. With the front cover off, reach the white impeller through the grille of small squares at the back of the pump and work it back and forth with a small screwdriver until it turns freely, then fill the tub and press micro. Once freed it normally stays free; if it locks up again the pump is replaced under the parts warranty.

The air bubbles trip the breaker but the hydro jets still work. Is this a microbubble problem?
No. When the breaker trips only as the air bubble switch is turned on and other features such as the water jets keep working, the fault is in the air bubble system rather than the microbubble line. Swapping the master bath controller does not help if the breaker still trips the moment the air pump motor starts. Open a ticket with your serial number at ellasbubbles.com/support or call (800) 480-6850 so the technical team can look at the air pump.
The air massage stopped but the light on the same circuit still works. What should I check?
If the breaker has not tripped and the light on that circuit is still on, the air hose has most likely fallen off. Reseat the air line firmly, and note that a fastener may be needed to keep it attached to the system. If the air bubbles, lower jets and light all went out together, look for a loose wire or a tripped breaker instead.
How can I tell whether the air pump itself has failed?
If the auto purge still runs, the air pump has power and is properly connected to the control box, so the pump is getting its signal. Plugging the air pump directly into a GFCI outlet confirms whether the pump itself runs. If it does not start on its own, open a ticket with your serial number so the technical team can arrange the next step.
