A hydro pump that hums in an empty tub is not broken, and it is not supposed to push air. The hydro system moves water, so with nothing in the tub all you get is the sound of the motor turning. Water, Not Air
Ella tubs can have two separate massage systems. The hydro pump draws water from the tub and drives it back through the jets. The air massage system, on tubs that have it, uses a separate pump that pushes air through its own jets. Installers who expect a puff of air from the hydro jets after reconnecting a hose are listening for the wrong system. Testing After a Hose or Fitting Repair
- Finish the repair and confirm every hose and fitting is seated before adding water.
- Fill the tub until the water is above the highest hydro jets, as described in what the water line before running the jets is. Half full is not enough on a standard hydro package, because one pump feeds every jet and the upper jets will spray instead of circulating.
- Confirm the pump has power at its outlet or breaker.
- Press the hydro button and watch the jets. Water should surge from them once the pump is running.
- With the pump running, check the repaired connection under the tub for drips, then shut off and drain.
No Priming, and No Dry Running
The push button on the apron does not need priming. It sends a puff of air down a hose to a relay, which switches the pump. There is nothing to prime on the pump either; it only needs the tub filled above the jets. What it cannot tolerate is running dry. The hydro control is a plain on-and-off switch with no low-water cutoff, so nothing stops the pump if someone presses the button in an empty tub, and running it that way can burn the pump out. Make it a habit to fill first and press second. If a pump was run dry and now pushes noticeably less water than before, open a ticket with your model and serial number so the team can review it with you.
If the Tub Is Full and the Pump Still Only Hums
Once you know the fill level and power are right, a pump that hums without moving water points to something on the wet side: a blocked pump inlet cover, a hose that came off again, or a relay problem.
