What Replaces a Discontinued Ella Faucet Valve, and Will It Fit My Deck?

When an Ella faucet valve is no longer offered, Ella supplies a current part that does the same job, and the differences are physical rather than functional. A discontinued deck-mount thermostatic control valve is replaced by the current Ella TCV, and a discontinued faucet set such as a Huntington Brass or Jandon model is replaced by the 5-Piece Fast Fill faucet in the version sized for your existing deck plate, as Replacing Your Walk-In Tub Faucet Set, Valves or Hand Mixer explains. Both fit an older deck once two things are planned for: the supply connections step up to 3/4 inch, and the body can be slightly larger than the part it replaces.

First Confirm Which Valve You Actually Have

The model code on your label identifies the tub and the drain side, not the faucet. Faucets have changed over the years, so two tubs with the same code built in different years can carry different sets. Do not buy a cartridge or a valve until the faucet is identified. Three things let the team match the part:

  • The serial number, printed on the label behind the magnetic access panel next to the door. It tells the team when the tub was built and which parts are compatible.
  • A clear photo of the faucet on the deck showing the handles, the spout and the hand shower if there is one, plus a photo of the connections under the deck.
  • The original invoice, which names the faucet model that was ordered.

If the faucet body or escutcheons carry the Huntington Brass name, you have the Roman tub filler HB9937-C or the Huntington Brass two-piece set, and the path is different. Ella did not carry alternative handles or cartridges for those faucets, so cartridges and stems come from Huntington Brass directly, as the Huntington Brass parts guide describes. When you want to move on from the whole set, the Ella 5-Piece Fast Fill replaces it. Because the connections differ, a Huntington Brass hose and an Ella hose do not interchange. Which Faucet and Spout Parts Shipped With My Tub lays out what each set contains.

Old Valve to Current Part: What Changes at the Connections

Read down the third column and the pattern is clear: everything Ella currently supplies connects at 3/4 inch, and Ella now carries 3/4 inch supply lines only. If your tub was plumbed with 1/2 inch lines, those are standard pipe thread parts from a plumbing supplier, and the step between the two sizes is a standard NPT adapter rather than a special Ella part. That is why a valve that looks nothing like your old one still fits the same tub.

Fitting the Current TCV into an Older Deck Opening

The current TCV mixes hot and cold water to a set temperature exactly as the earlier valve did. Its body is slightly wider, so the fit is checked at the deck rather than assumed. Your own licensed plumber does the work in this order:

  1. Shut off the hot and cold supplies and disconnect the lines.
  2. Remove the old valve and its deck plate. The TCV replacement video shows the disassembly sequence on an Ella valve: control handle off its Allen bolt, cover plate, governor, washers, escutcheon plate, then the metal collar loosened at its unthreaded flat wrench area so the threads are not damaged.
  3. Thread on the 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch NPT adapters if your lines are 1/2 inch.
  4. Test fit the new valve from below. If it binds in the existing deck opening, widen the opening a little at a time, usually about 1/4 inch, keeping the cut small so the deck plate still covers the edge.
  5. Reconnect the lines, then check every joint for drips.
  6. Set a comfortable temperature. The temperature adjustment video shows the spring-loaded locking pin inside the handle that acts as the anti-scald stop, with the button springing back at 100.4 degrees, and how a quarter turn of the handle counterclockwise after reseating it lets more hot water through.

Protect the new valve with an inline filter or mesh and clean it periodically. The TCV carries a one-year limited warranty, and cartridge fouling from calcium, iron or heavy particles is not covered. The replacement video also shows the maintenance that keeps it working: the intake screens and the bottom of the cartridge are cleaned of sediment with a soft brush and CLR, and the gaskets are lightly lubricated with lithium grease before reassembly.

Why the 5-Piece Fast Fill Is Sized to Your Deck Plate

The valves on the newest version of the 5-Piece Fast Fill are too large to fit a replacement plate, so when the set replaces a discontinued faucet the team supplies the version sized for your existing deck plate. The set looks very similar on the deck and connects the same way. The 5-Piece does not use the thermostatic temperature control piece with the built-in filter that some older faucets had, which is one reason the team recommends it as the replacement, and its hot and cold valves have no filter or aerator inside them. The 5-Piece includes its 3/4 inch supply lines.

You also do not have to replace everything. Dripping or a stiff handle usually means a worn cartridge rather than a new faucet, and no hot water at the tub while the sinks have hot water points to the thermostatic control valve, not the faucet body. If only the hot and cold valves have failed, the existing spout and hand sprayer can stay in place while the handles and valves are switched, with the spout supply line adapted from 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch NPT.

How to Request the Part

In most cases parts are still available for an older Ella tub, and technical support continues for the life of the tub. For a tub 6 or more years old, some parts may no longer be stocked, and the team confirms a current equivalent, as Are Parts Still Available for My Older Ella Tub? explains. An older thermostatic valve with 1/2 inch supply connections is one of the named cases that needs adapters or a current Ella set. Contact your Ella dealer, where you purchased, or the team at (800) 480-6850, or open a ticket at ellasbubbles.com/support, with the serial label photo, the model if you know it, photos of the valve and the deck, where the tub was purchased and a street address for UPS. The team confirms the exact part for your tub before anything ships.

Common Questions

Will the new valve connect to my existing 1/2 inch supply lines?
Yes, with an adapter. The current TCV has 3/4 inch NPT inlets and the 5-Piece Fast Fill uses 3/4 inch supply lines, so your plumber threads on 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch NPT adapters, which are standard plumbing parts.
Do I need to replace the spout and hand sprayer too?
No. You can leave the existing spout and hand sprayer in place and switch out only the handles and valves, adapting the spout supply line from 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch NPT. The team will ask which piece is actually failing before supplying anything.
Can Ella send a cartridge for my Huntington Brass faucet?
No. Ella did not carry replacement cartridges, stems or alternative handles for the Huntington Brass faucets, so contact Huntington Brass directly and quote the faucet model. Ella's technical support can help confirm which faucet is on your tub first.
Will the replacement valve look different on the tub deck?
The 5-Piece Fast Fill replacement looks very similar on the deck and connects the same way, and the team supplies the version sized for your existing deck plate. The current TCV is slightly wider than older valves, so it is test fitted from below before the plate goes on.
What if my deck opening is too small for the current valve?
Your plumber widens the opening a little at a time, usually about 1/4 inch, and keeps the cut small so the deck plate still covers the edge. Test fit from below before cutting anything.
Why does the thermostatic valve need an inline filter?
Cartridge fouling from calcium, iron or heavy particles is not covered under the TCV's one-year limited warranty. An inline filter or mesh, cleaned periodically, keeps sediment off the intake screens and the cartridge.
