Yes, but only in a walk-in tub that was built for it. Ella's Bubbles makes two LayDown walk-in tubs, the LayDown 30x60 and the LayDown 32x72, that let you recline at full length while still stepping in through a low glass side door. Every other Ella walk-in tub is designed for seated bathing, and lying down in a seated walk-in tub is not recommended and could be hazardous, a point also made in Can I Order an Ella Walk-In Tub Without a Door?.
Why a Seated Walk-In Tub Is Not for Lying Down
A seated walk-in tub is built around a molded seat at chair height, about 17 inches high on most models, with a footwell in front of it and a door that stays closed while the tub fills and drains. The owner's manuals ask the bather to sit fully in the seat with the back against the backrest, not to slouch, not to lie down in the footwell, and not to put the feet up on the opposite side. The footwell is the deepest part of the tub, and Ella's published guidance notes that a walk-in tub's water depth is comparable to a shallow swimming pool or a hot tub. A bather who slides out of the seat to stretch out is therefore in the deepest water with no backrest, which is the reason the manuals rule it out. Any bather who is paralyzed or does not have all limbs functioning must be attended by a caregiver at all times and use an installed safety belt.
The LayDown Tubs: A Walk-In Tub You Lie Down in
The LayDown 30x60 and the LayDown 32x72 are the two Ella models for a full recline. Both have a glass side door with a low threshold, and both can be ordered with an optional glass shower screen. The faucet rule differs by size: the LayDown 30x60 has no factory faucet option and needs a customer-supplied faucet, typically wall mounted, while the LayDown 32x72 is faucet ready and can be ordered with an optional Ella deck-mount fast-fill faucet. Like every Ella tub, a LayDown is built with a door; a doorless soaking version is not offered. Door side follows your plumbing on every Ella walk-in tub, since a right-side door tub has its drains on the left and a left-side door tub has its drains on the right as you face the tub. The three-step method for settling space, door side and therapy is in How to Narrow Down an Ella Walk-In Tub by Space, Door Side and Therapy.
What a Seated Walk-In Tub Gives You Instead
If you choose a seated model, the bath works differently from a regular tub. You enter first, close the door, then fill; after the bath you open the drain, wait, then open the door. Ella pairs its seated tubs with a fast-fill faucet, rated 16 GPM on the 2-piece set and 18 GPM on the 5-piece set under ideal home plumbing, and most models have gravity-driven dual 2 inch drains. Seats are sized by model, from 19 inches on the Petite to 29 inches on the TransferXXL, with a non-slip textured floor and, on nearly every model, a built-in grab bar. There is no set weight limit; if you sit comfortably in the seat, the reinforced shell will hold you. Optional heated seats add warmth while the tub fills.
