If you pushed the drain stopper down and now it will not open, the push most likely forced the drain stem off its armature or broke the cable, and the recovery is done through the drain connection box behind the front access panel rather than at the stopper. Ella stoppers are operated only by the handle and cable: turning the handle pulls a stainless steel cable that swings an armature inside a small box on the drain, and the armature raises or lowers the stopper through the drain stem. Pressing the stopper closed with a hand or foot works against that linkage from the wrong end, which is why closing the floor drains by pushing on them so often ends with a stopper that no longer answers the handle. Likely Causes

• The drain stem was pushed off the armature, so the handle moves the cable but nothing reaches the stopper.
• The cable barrel end popped off the armature inside the connection box.
• The cable snapped under the sudden load.
• The stopper was pressed past its set height, so it now seats too low to lift with the handle.

What to Check, in Order

1. Turn the handle fully open and watch the stopper. If it lifts a little, the stem height may have shifted; if it does nothing, the linkage is off.
2. Do not pull or pry the stopper from above. Lift the chrome plug off gently if it comes free, but leave the stem alone until you can see the linkage from below.
3. Remove the front access panel and take the small service panel off the drain connection box.
4. Look at the armature. If the cable barrel end is loose, seat it back on the armature with the flat side of the connection facing up. If the stem has slipped off, guide it back so there is a positive connection between the stem and the armature.
5. Test the handle. It should sit straight up and down for open and closed and the stopper should rise fully. If the plug now sits too high or low, adjust the stem a little at a time and tighten its lock nut, as shown in drain plugs, stems and gaskets.
6. If the cable is broken, it is a replaceable part and the swap is done from the same box without removing the tub.
