What is the Ella LayDown72 32x72 lay-down walk-in tub?

Updated September 2026

The Ella LayDown72 is the larger of the two Ella LayDown walk-in tubs: a 32 inch wide by 72 inch long acrylic tub built for bathing lying down at full length rather than seated. You enter through an inward-swinging tempered glass side door in a brushed aluminum frame, the tub empties through a single oversized 2 inch brass drain, and it can be ordered as a soaking tub or with air massage, hydro massage or microbubble therapy. The side-by-side look at both LayDown sizes is in The LayDown Walk-In Tubs: 30x60 vs 32x72 Sizes, Faucet Options, and Features.

Size and Layout

The LayDown72 is 32 inches wide by 72 inches long nominal, and the spec sheet drawing prints the overall length as 71 3/4 inches. The interior floor is 22 1/2 inches wide, and the drain hole is 2 3/4 inches in diameter. The sidewalls are straight and narrow, which keeps the bathing space wide and avoids the tripping hazard that the curved walls of a conventional tub create, and the floor is textured for slip resistance. The tub is offered with a left or right drain, so find your house drain before you choose. Because the 72 is 32 inches wide where the LayDown60 is 30 inches wide, measure the width of the alcove as carefully as the length.

The Glass Door, the Drain and the Optional Screen

The door is a tempered glass panel in a brushed aluminum frame with a chrome locking handle. It swings inward through a 115 degree arc with a door opening of 19 5/8 inches, so no floor clearance is needed in front of the tub. Swing the door in, step over the low threshold, close it while you are still standing, rotate the handle fully, and drain the tub completely before opening it again. The full routine is in Operating and Caring for the LayDown Tempered Glass Door. The single drain is made up of a cable-operated drain opener, a copper overflow and a 2 inch threaded brass drain, worked by large, easy-to-turn drain controls. A folding tempered glass shower screen is an optional accessory, and the spec drawing shows it spanning 44 1/2 inches along the rim.

Faucet and Therapy Options

No LayDown tub includes a faucet by default. The LayDown72 is faucet ready, and it can be ordered with an optional Ella deck-mount fast-fill faucet, either the five-piece or the two-piece set, each with an extendable multi-function hand shower. The owner's manual notes that its hand shower barrel extension warning applies only to the 32x72 with the hand mixer option, so the extension hose and stainless barrel go on before the hand shower is ever wall mounted. Therapy choices are a three-speed air massage with auto purge, a hydro massage with an easy-touch push-button control, an intensity control dial, an inline water heater and ozone sterilization, or microbubble therapy. A soaking-only LayDown72 has no therapy system at all. The video on this page shows the 3272 with hydro massage jets: the textured floor, the glass door in its aluminum frame, the low threshold, the drain controls, the push button and dial, and both fast-fill faucet sets.

Documents for the LayDown72

One 23-page owner's manual dated 6/15/23 covers both LayDown sizes, and it is mapped in Your LayDown Owner's Manual, Section by Section (30x60 and 32x72). It calls for a pre-installation water test filled 3 inches above the highest jet, 30 minutes standing and 30 minutes running. The brochure's component diagram is drawn from the 32x72 with air massage, with eleven callouts from the drain opener to the cold water switch, explained in Where Everything Is on a LayDown Tub: The Brochure Callout Diagram Explained. The LayDown72 spec sheet contains dimensioned drawings only, so weights, shipping size and water capacity for your order are confirmed by your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850.

Common Questions

Does the LayDown72 door swing inward or outward?
The LayDown72 door swings inward into the tub through a 115 degree arc. Its door opening is 19 5/8 inches, and because it opens inward, no clear floor space is needed in front of the tub. Close and lock it while standing, and drain the tub fully before opening it.
Does the LayDown72 come with a faucet included?
No LayDown tub includes a faucet by default. The LayDown72 is faucet ready and can be ordered with an optional Ella deck-mount fast-fill faucet, in a five-piece or two-piece set, each with an extendable multi-function hand shower. This is different from the LayDown60, which has no factory faucet option.
How many drains does the LayDown72 walk-in tub have?
The LayDown72 has one oversized 2 inch threaded brass drain with a copper overflow and a cable-operated drain opener, rather than the dual drains on Ella's seated tubs. The tub is available with the drain on the left or the right. Mention that the tub is a LayDown when you ask about drain hardware.
Can the LayDown72 be ordered with hydro massage jets?
Yes. The hydro massage version has strategically placed hydro jets, an easy-touch push-button control, an intensity control dial, an inline water heater and ozone sterilization. Air massage, microbubble therapy and a plain soaking configuration are the other choices.
How much water does the LayDown72 hold when full?
The LayDown72 spec sheet is a set of dimensioned drawings without a text block, so water capacity, weight and shipping size are not printed on it. Ask your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 for the current figures for your order. Do not rely on the LayDown60 figures, since the 72 is a larger tub.
Will the LayDown72 fit where my current bathtub sits?
Measure the opening first. The LayDown72 is 32 inches wide with an overall drawing length of 71 3/4 inches, and the optional shower screen spans 44 1/2 inches along the rim. Compare those figures with your alcove and the path into the bathroom, and have your installer confirm the fit before ordering.
