What is the Ella LayDown walk-in bathtub and which sizes are available?

Updated September 2026

The Ella LayDown is a walk-in bathtub you lie down in rather than sit in: a flat-floored acrylic tub with a tempered glass side-entry door in a brushed aluminum frame, a low threshold, straight sidewalls and a single oversized 2 inch brass drain. It comes in two sizes, the LayDown60 at 30 inches wide by 60 inches long by 21 inches high and the LayDown72 at 32 inches wide by 72 inches long. Because there is no molded seat, Does the LayDown Tub Have a Seat? Flat Bottom Design, Seat Figures on Listings, Faucets and Therapy Choices explains how it differs from every other Ella tub.

The Two Sizes

  • LayDown60 (30x60): actual size 60 inches long by 30 inches wide by 21 inches high, with an interior floor of 46 by 20 inches. Net weight 160 pounds, shipping weight 220 pounds, shipping size 63 by 33 by 29 inches.
  • LayDown72 (32x72): 32 inches wide by 72 inches long nominal, with the drawing printing the overall length as 71 3/4 inches and an interior floor 22 1/2 inches wide. It is offered with a left or right drain, so find your house drain before you choose.

Both sizes have a soaking depth of 15 inches, compared to about 11 inches in a standard bathtub, which is why the LayDown is much deeper and roomier than an average tub while sitting only 21 inches high in the 60 inch size. Because the 72 is wider than the 60, measure the width of the alcove as carefully as the length. The larger model has its own profile in What is the Ella LayDown72 32x72 lay-down walk-in tub?, and the height question is covered in Do they make a bathtub that is only 15 inches high?.

Door, Drain and Shower Screen

The door is a tempered glass panel in a brushed aluminum frame with a chrome locking handle. It swings inward through a 115 degree arc with a door opening of 19 5/8 inches, so no floor clearance is needed in front of the tub. Swing the door in, step over the low threshold, close it while you are still standing, rotate the handle fully, and drain the tub completely before opening it again. The LayDown60 spec sheet lists a 2 inch brass drain with overflow. On the LayDown72 the drain assembly is a cable-operated drain opener, a copper overflow and a 2 inch threaded brass drain worked by large, easy-to-turn controls, with a 2 3/4 inch drain hole. A folding tempered glass shower screen is an optional accessory on both sizes. The video shows the 30x60 model's chrome locking handle, tempered glass door and low threshold, along with the bifold glass shower door with its chrome hinges, chrome brackets and bottom gasket.

Faucets and Therapy Choices

No LayDown tub includes a faucet by default. The LayDown60 has no faucet option at all and requires a pre-existing or new customer-supplied faucet, typically wall mounted. The LayDown72 is faucet ready and can be ordered with an optional Ella deck-mount fast-fill faucet, either the five-piece or the two-piece set, each with an extendable multi-function hand shower. A LayDown takes a single therapy system, chosen when you order: soaking with no jets, hydro massage with an intensity dial and in-line heater, three-speed air massage with auto purge that activates 20 minutes after the pump shuts down, or microbubble therapy. The LayDown60 air massage system has 20 jets, which the video describes as a full body air massage you can stretch out in.

Who the LayDown Is for

The LayDown is meant for reclined bathing. Every other Ella walk-in tub is designed for seated bathing, and lying down in a seated tub is not recommended and could be hazardous, as Can you lie down in a walk-in tub? explains. Someone who needs to sit upright, or who cannot lower themselves to the floor of the tub and rise again, is better served by a seated walk-in tub or a transfer tub. Ella does offer two removable seat options that can be installed in a LayDown, and the team can send images so you can see how they sit. The deck has no room for hardware, so grab bars are mounted on the wall beside the tub. Like every Ella tub, a LayDown is built with a door; a doorless soaking version is not offered.

What kind of drain does the LayDown have?

Which therapy systems can a LayDown have?
One system per tub: soaking, hydro massage, three-speed air massage with auto purge, or microbubble. The LayDown60 air massage uses 20 jets. Choose the therapy that matters most to you when you order.
Does the LayDown door need clearance in front of the tub?
No. The tempered glass door swings inward through a 115 degree arc with a 19 5/8 inch opening, so no floor space is needed in front. Drain the tub completely before opening the door.
