The Floor: Tub, Water and Bather Together

Ella's owner's manuals put the requirement plainly: the subfloor must be level and able to support the total weight of the tub, the bather and the water, and it must meet local code. Most standard-size Ella tubs weigh 200 to 240 pounds empty and hold 65 to 107 gallons unoccupied, and water weighs about 8.34 pounds per gallon. A walk-in tub is a concentrated load on a small footprint rather than a load spread across the room, so the 40 pounds per square foot residential figure from the International Residential Code, Table R301.5, is only where an inspector starts. Joist size, span, spacing and condition all matter, and in a mobile home a structural check by your contractor or an engineer is the step that gives the definitive answer. The Models the Team Suggests for Mobile Homes

  • Front Entry. The shortest tub in the line at 32 inches wide by 40 inches long by 40 inches high, with the outward-swinging U-shape door on the end, so it slides into a space only 40 inches long and is not ordered as left-hand or right-hand.   • Flow. 28 inches wide by 48 inches long by 36.5 inches high, built to pass a 28 inch doorway because the shell is 27 3/4 inches wide, and shipped with an extension panel so it still fills a standard 60 inch alcove.   • Mobile. Recommended alongside the Front Entry for single-wide mobile homes. Ask your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 for its spec sheet.
  • RVs are different. The team has no direct installation experience in recreational vehicles, so the RV's floor structure and plumbing capacity must be confirmed by the owner before ordering.

Doorways, Door Swing and Utilities

Check every exterior and interior doorway the tub must pass on the way to the bathroom, and measure the room itself. Each tub needs its own dedicated 110/120V 60Hz GFCI line or lines depending on the therapy package, run by a licensed electrician, and the Flow specifies a 15A GFCI where other Ella tubs specify 20A. The 2-piece fast-fill faucet connects with two 3/4 inch by 5 foot supply lines, and both the Front Entry and the Flow use a single 2 inch drain with overflow and an emergency pull chain.
