A walk-in tub places three loads on your bathroom floor at once: the tub itself, the water in it, and the bather. Ella's Bubbles owner's manuals put the requirement plainly: the subfloor must be level and able to support the total weight of the tub, the bather and the water, and it must meet local code. Most standard-size Ella tubs weigh 200 to 240 pounds empty and hold 65 to 107 gallons unoccupied, and water weighs about 8.34 pounds per gallon. The Three Loads: Tub, Water, Bather
The tub's net weight is printed on its specification sheet, and every model is listed in walk-in tub weights by model. Water capacity is printed two ways, an unoccupied figure and an occupied range, because the bather displaces water; both are in water capacity by model. For a floor-loading estimate, use the unoccupied figure, since it is the most water the tub can hold. Add the bather's weight and you have the load the floor carries during a bath.
All weights on this page are in pounds and all capacities are in gallons, taken from the current specification sheets. Several sheets print incorrect metric conversions, so metric figures are intentionally left out.
The Residential Floor Load Figure Inspectors Use
The International Residential Code, in Table R301.5, sets the minimum uniformly distributed live load for rooms other than sleeping rooms at 40 pounds per square foot. That is the starting point an inspector or engineer uses for a residential floor. A walk-in tub is a concentrated load on a small footprint rather than a load spread evenly across the room, so the code figure alone does not settle the question; joist size, span, spacing and condition all matter. Your local inspector applies the edition adopted in your area, and a structural check by your contractor or an engineer gives the definitive answer for your floor.
Worked Examples from Published Ella Figures
The table adds the net weight to the unoccupied water weight at 8.34 pounds per gallon. Results are rounded and approximate; add the bather's weight for the total during a bath. A seated bather displaces roughly 20 to 40 gallons, so these numbers lean conservative.

For scale, a conventional bathtub full of water with a bather in it carries a load of the same order, which is why a walk-in tub usually replaces a standard tub without structural work in a sound home. The larger models, such as the Big4One and ShaK, hold considerably more water and deserve a closer look. How Leveling Legs Spread the Load
The load reaches the floor through the threaded leveling legs on the frame. Every Ella tub has at least six, and many models have up to eight, including center legs. More legs spread the weight over more points, reduce subfloor movement and frame twist, and protect the silicone seams. That only works when every leg is carrying weight: the manuals require all leveling legs to touch the floor with equal weight distribution, because an unlevel frame warps the shell, misaligns the door and leads to leaks. Older Homes, Second Floors, Mobile Homes and Slabs
On a concrete slab the structure is rarely the concern; the planning issue there is the drain. Wood-framed floors are where the check matters. Upper floors and older homes may have longer joist spans, notched joists or past water damage under a previous tub, and mobile and manufactured homes use lighter floor framing. Have your contractor look at the framing before the tub is ordered, and fix any subfloor problem before the tub is set. What the Manuals Require and What Only a Structural Check Can Answer
The manuals require a level subfloor that supports the combined weight of tub, water and bather to local code. They cannot tell you whether your particular joists do. That answer comes from your contractor, an engineer where one is recommended, and the inspector who signs off.
