When a handle comes away with almost no effort, the mounting nut on the inside of the door has usually loosened and dropped. It is very likely still inside the door. Replacing the Mechanism Inside the Door

On doors with a glass panel set in the door frame, the latch mechanism sits behind the glass. The space is awkward, but the procedure is straightforward.

2. Loosen the 5mm hex screw on the broken piece and slide it off.
3. Fit the new piece with the mechanism in the closed position. Installing it in the open position is the most common mistake.
