A breaker or GFCI that keeps tripping when your Ella's Bubbles walk-in tub runs is almost always telling you one of two things: the circuit is carrying more than it was sized for, or a component is leaking current to ground. The first is a sizing question your electrician solves by adding the dedicated 20A, 120V GFCI line your package requires. The second is a safety signal: if a GFCI trips and will not reset, switch the power off and do not use the tub until a licensed electrician has found and corrected the cause. This article explains how the circuits should be laid out, what each component draws, and how to tell an overload from a fault.

The video covers the rules your contractor follows when connecting the tub to your home's power: dedicated GFCI protected outlets must be used, the tub cannot share a circuit with any other appliance, the breaker box must also use GFCI protected breakers, and the amperage provided depends on the number and type of components in your tub. How Many Dedicated Lines Your Package Needs

Nearly every Ella tub with pumps is specified for dedicated 20A, 120V GFCI protected lines, and the count depends on the therapy package:

  • One line: Hydro only; Air only (LayDown); Microbubble only (LayDown); Air + Hydro on a single-seat tub.
  • Two lines: Hydro + Microbubble; Air + Hydro + Hydro Foot; and the single-seat variants that add Microbubble or a Heated Seat.
  • Three lines: Shak and Big4One with the digital Air + Hydro + Hydro Foot + Micro package, and the full two-seat package (Air + Hydro + Hydro Foot + Micro + Heated Seat).
  • 15A exceptions: The Flow is the only Ella tub specified for a 15A GFCI outlet. A soaking tub with only the optional heated seat, and no pumps, needs a 15A, 120V line.

Every Ella walk-in tub runs on standard 120V household power, not 220V or 240V. A 15A circuit may be enough for a lighter package, but 20A is the published standard and the recommended choice. Please confirm your exact package with us before the electrician runs the line. What Each Component Draws

Adding up the published amp ratings of everything that runs at once shows why one circuit suits one package and trips on another. Typical ratings from the specification sheets:

  • Hydro pump: 5A to 9A depending on model (8.1A on the Standard family; 9A seat pumps on Shak, Big4One, Tub4Two, and Big4Two).
  • In-line water heater: 5.5A to 9A depending on model; it runs only while the hydro pump runs.
  • Air massage pump: 4.5A on most models, 6.4A on Ultra and Elite.
  • Microbubble pump: 1 HP, 7.3A (10A on the Standard60 H2 system).
  • Heated Seat and Backrest: 4A.

Amp values for pumps may change based on availability, so verify against your own specification sheet or with us at (800) 480-6850. A hydro pump, in-line heater, and air pump together already use most of a 20A circuit, which is why adding a heated seat or a second pump moves the package into the two-line column. A tub that runs fine on hydro alone but trips when everything is on is describing an overload, not a defect.

The 20A Plug

Some master control boxes (the type that runs the massage systems together with a heated seat) carry a 20A plug with one blade turned sideways, which needs a 20A receptacle. Others use a standard three-prong 15A style plug. Either way the line must be dedicated and GFCI protected, and extension cords must never be used. GFCI Will Not Reset: Stop and Call an Electrician

Push the GFCI "test" button and then "reset." If the GFCI fails to operate this way, there is ground current flow or a device malfunction, which indicates the possibility of electrical shock. Turn the power off and do not use the tub until a licensed electrician has identified and corrected the source. Three situations deserve special mention:

  • A burning smell together with a tripping GFCI is a reason to leave the power off and open a ticket right away rather than keep testing.
  • The GFCI trips the instant the main cord is plugged in, even with every pump and wire disconnected from the control box and a new GFCI breaker installed, points to the control box or its cord rather than the circuit. Please do not keep resetting it.   • A pump that trips the breaker and now rattles or sounds abnormal needs to stay off until our team has looked at it.

After a Trip: Getting the Tub Running Again

  1. Reset the breaker in your panel, then also press the reset button on the GFCI outlet serving the tub. They are separate devices and both can trip.
  2. Look at the control box behind the access panel. A green LED shows that power is reaching the box. No green light means the problem is upstream in the outlet, cord, or circuit.

Have the Electrician Confirm the Basics

This short video covers grounding: every Ella tub ships with ground wires on all electrical components and on the frame, and the installer must secure a proper ground connection to local and state code. An ungrounded frame is one of the things an electrician looks for when tripping continues.

The warranty activation checklist requires a licensed electrician, a dedicated GFCI breaker, and a grounded frame, so an electrician's visit is the right move whenever tripping continues. Ask them to confirm that each tub cord is on its own dedicated GFCI protected line, that the line count matches the package, and that no extension cord is in use. Common Questions

My tub trips the breaker when all features run. What is wrong?
That pattern is an overload. Compare your package with the line count above; a second dedicated 20A line is the usual fix.
The GFCI will not reset after a trip. What should I do?
Turn the power off and do not use the tub. A GFCI that will not reset indicates ground current flow or a device malfunction, and a licensed electrician needs to correct it.
Do I need a GFCI breaker and a GFCI outlet?
Our published installation guidance calls for GFCI protected outlets and GFCI protected breakers on dedicated lines; your electrician applies local code to how that protection is provided.
Can both plugs share one GFCI?
No. Each plug on a two-line or three-line package goes to its own dedicated GFCI protected line; sharing is what causes the overload trip.
Is there a fuse or reset inside the tub?
Not in our published documentation. Reset the breaker and the GFCI outlet, check for the green LED on the control box, and use the control box reset guide if needed.
I reset the breaker but the tub still does not turn on.
Press the reset button on the GFCI outlet as well; it trips independently of the panel breaker. Then look for the green LED on the control box. If the outlet is live and the LED stays dark, send the team your serial number and a photo of the box.
Is the tub 220V? My panel is 220.
No. Every Ella walk-in tub runs on standard 120V household power. The panel can be 220V; the tub circuits are 120V, 20A GFCI lines.
The breaker trips while the tub is not in use. Why?
A trip with the tub idle is worth an electrician's visit, because the components still draw power at rest and a ground fault can appear without a pump running. Note whether it happened around the 20 minute Auto Purge window, and send the team the details so they can work with your electrician.
Can I use a nearby 15A line with little else on it?
A 15A line is published only for the Flow and for a soaking tub with just the heated seat. Every other pump package is specified for a dedicated 20A line, and running it on 15A invites exactly the tripping this article describes.
