Why Did the Air Blower and Ozone Generator Both Stop Working?

Updated November 2026

When the air blower and the ozone generator stop at the same time, the cause is almost always one loss of power rather than two separate failures, because both are fed through the blue control box under the tub. Start with the GFCI outlet and breaker that serve the tub, then the green power light on the control box, and then the plugs for the air pump and the hydro pump, since the ozone generator draws its power through the hydro pump's cord. The same power checks that bring back silent jets are laid out in Why Did the Jets on My Walk-In Tub Stop Working?, and they come before anything else here.

Why the Two Systems Fail Together

The air blower and the ozone generator do different jobs, but they share a power path. The blower is the three speed air pump that pushes air through the many small jets in the seat and floor, and it only runs when the air button is pressed. It plugs into the outlet on top of the blue control box, not into the wall, and the box switches it on and off. The ozone generator belongs to the hydro massage system. It starts and stops with the hydro pump, and its power cord joins the hydro pump's cord at a T connection, with the hydro pump's plug coming from the central control box. So the box feeds the blower directly and feeds the ozone generator through the hydro pump line.

If the box loses power, or the outlet behind it trips, the blower, the hydro pump and the ozone generator all go quiet in the same moment. A tub that has lost both is telling you about one upstream problem. Two unrelated parts failing in the same bath is far less common than a tripped GFCI or a dark control box, which is the first thing the support team looks for when a tub is not working.

First Confirm What You Are Actually Missing

Before you open the access panel, make sure the symptom is real, because the ozone generator is easy to misjudge. It makes only a light hum, and it runs only while the hydro pump runs. If you were listening for it with the hydro massage switched off, silence is normal. Our guide to the sounds an Ella walk-in tub makes describes the pump hum, the ozone hum, the relay click and the rush of air so you know what to listen for.

  • Fill the tub so the water sits 1 to 2 inches above the highest jets, run the hydro massage and listen for the light hum of the ozone generator alongside the pump. If the hydro pump itself does not start, the fault sits upstream of the ozone unit.
  • Press the air button once. The first press is high speed, so a working blower is loud straight away. If nothing happens, note whether the water button does anything either.
  • After you switch the air massage off, wait about 20 minutes. A working blower comes on by itself for 120 seconds to purge water out of the air lines. If that burst never arrives, the blower is not getting its signal or its power. Can I Stop the Air Blower Turning On After My Bath? describes what the normal purge looks like.

If the hydro pump runs and the blower runs but you cannot hear the ozone hum, you have a narrower question, covered further down. If nothing on the tub responds to any button, keep going with the power checks.

What to Check, in Order

  1. Reset the GFCI outlet serving the tub. It may be behind the access panel. Confirm the breaker is on. If the outlet trips again as soon as you reset it, stop there and have a licensed electrician look at the circuit.
  2. Remove the front access panel and find the green power LED on the control box. Lit means power is reaching the box. Dark with a live outlet points to the box or its cord, and the control box reset is the next step.
  3. Look at where the air pump is plugged in. It belongs in the female outlet on top of the blue control box. A pump that has been moved to a wall outlet runs continuously rather than not at all, so if the blower is silent and its plug is on the box, the box is not switching it.
  4. Follow the hydro pump cord to the T connection. The ozone generator's cord and the hydro pump's cord meet there, and the joined plug goes to the control box. Make sure both ends of the T are seated and the plug into the box is firm. The first video on this page shows a technician checking exactly these pump and control box connections on a tub with three pumps.
  5. Press the water button and listen for the relay click. The push buttons are pneumatic, so a loose air tube at the button or at the box nipple stops the signal even when power is fine. Push the tube onto its nipple with a twist and push, then try again.

On tubs with more than two pumps, the control box runs two of them, the air pump and the water pump, while a third pump is powered up with the in-line heater on its own lines. If one massage works and the other does not, one of the pumps or components is usually not plugged in, and the fix is the plug, not a new part.

When the Ozone Was Disconnected on Purpose

Some owners choose to run without ozone, and Ella publishes the procedure: the T connection is separated at both ends, the ozone generator's cord is wrapped with a cable tie and secured inside the tub frame, and the hydro pump plug is reconnected straight to the plug from the central control box. The second video shows those steps. If you bought a home with the tub already installed, or an installer did this during an earlier repair, the ozone generator will be silent during every bath even though the hydro pump and the blower are fine. Look for a tied-off cord inside the frame before you decide the unit has failed. Reversing it means restoring the T connection between the pump cord and the generator cord.

When It Is the Control Box

If the green LED stays dark with a live outlet, or the LED is lit but neither the blower nor the hydro pump responds to its button after the tubes are seated, the control box is the suspect. The reset involves labeling and disconnecting every air tube and electrical connection, restoring power, holding the config button until the green LED cycles through one, two, three and four blinks, releasing it, then reconnecting everything and testing each function. A box that will not reset, or whose LED never goes solid, is handled as a warranty part once the team has reviewed your photos. Ella does not send technicians, so the swap is done by your installer or a licensed electrician. The opposite fault, a blower that never shuts off, is the same box failing the other way, and Why Won't My Tub Stop Purging? covers it.

Opening a Ticket

Have your model and serial number ready, say whether the tub has chrome push buttons or the digital keypad, and send a photo of the control box showing the LED, a photo of the T connection and of where the air pump is plugged in, and a note of what you heard during the tests above. If the outlet keeps tripping, leave the breaker off. Contact your Ella dealer or the team at ellasbubbles.com/support or (800) 480-6850.

Common Questions

Does the ozone generator run when the hydro pump is off?
No. Ozone sterilization is part of the hydro massage system, and the generator starts and stops with the hydro pump. With the pump off, a silent ozone unit is normal. When it is running you hear only a light hum.
Can the air blower stop while the hydro jets still work?
Yes. The air pump and the water pump are switched separately by the control box, so one can lose its plug or its air signal while the other runs. Check that the air pump is plugged into the outlet on top of the box and that the air button's tube is firmly on its nipple.
Is the burst of air after my bath a sign the blower is failing?
No. That is the Auto Purge, which starts about 20 minutes after the air pump is switched off and runs for 120 seconds to blow residual water out of the air lines. It cannot be stopped and is normal even if you are still in the tub.
Why does the GFCI trip again right after I reset it?
An outlet that trips again immediately points to a wiring or component fault on that circuit. Stop resetting it and have a licensed electrician look at it. Note what you found for your ticket.
Will the tub still work with the ozone generator disconnected?
Yes. In the published procedure the hydro pump plug is reconnected directly to the plug from the central control box, so the hydro massage and the blower keep working. The generator's cord is simply tied off inside the frame.
