What Are Shipping Size and Shipping Weight on a Walk-In Tub?

Shipping size and shipping weight are the crated dimensions and crated weight of a walk-in tub, printed on every Ella spec sheet alongside the tub's own size and net weight. Because Ella tubs ship fully assembled inside a crate or reinforced container, the crate has to clear every doorway, hallway, staircase and turn on the route into the bathroom. That makes the shipping size, not the tub size, the number to measure your home against.

How It Works

Net weight is the tub alone. Shipping weight adds the crate, the skid and the packing. The Petite is a clear example: the tub is 27.5 inches wide and weighs 200 lbs, but it ships at 31 x 57 x 47 inches and 305 lbs. Across the line, net weights run from 160 to 328 lbs and shipped weights from 220 to 531 lbs. The pound values on the spec sheets are the authoritative figures; the kilogram conversions printed on some sheets are misprints and should not be used.

Tubs cannot be disassembled to fit through a doorway. What your installer can do is remove the front apron, access panels and end panels once the tub is uncrated, then measure and carry the bare frame. That is why the crate is only the first clearance question and the tub's actual size is the second.

What to Know as an Owner

Before your tub ships, walk the route from the curb to the bathroom with a tape measure. Note the narrowest doorway, the tightest turn, any stair landing and the ceiling height on stairs, and compare each against the shipping size for your model. Plan help for the weight. A crated tub of several hundred pounds needs more than one person, and stairs call for extra hands. Lift only by the frame once uncrated, never by plumbing or panels, since the air jets under the tub can break off.

How the Crate Arrives and Where to Keep It

Every Ella walk-in tub ships as one crated piece on a single pallet. It travels by LTL freight and is delivered curbside with a liftgate: the freight company contacts you on delivery day, lowers the crated pallet to the ground, and leaves it at the curb or driveway. If the crate has to ride an elevator or pass through a garage, measure every opening it must clear while still crated: the garage door, any gate, the elevator door, and the elevator cab's floor area and interior height. Include hallway turns, because a long crate needs room to pivot, and measure the diagonal too in case the crate has to be tilted or turned. If it will not fit crated, plan to uncrate it at the building entrance and carry the bare tub. Arrange enough people or a pallet jack for the shipping weight, since a crated tub is heavy and awkward for one or two people.

If the tub will not be installed the same day, choose a level, dry, indoor spot large enough for the crate footprint plus room to walk around it, and keep the tub in its crate and packaging until the installer is ready. Inspect it as soon as it arrives, visually and operationally where possible, and save all packaging material.
