On the Ella Ultimate, the system that works on your back is the seat hydro massage, which Ella's own walkthrough video describes as the hydro massage button for the back and the hips. You do not need to pick it from a list of packages, because the Ultimate spec sheet lists hydro massage, independent hydro foot and calf massage, air massage and LED chromatherapy together as included systems. The published documents do not print a jet height or name a dedicated upper back jet, so the practical answer is to use the seat hydro system, fill the tub correctly, and confirm jet positions on the technical drawing. The parts behind each system are laid out in What the Full Push-Control Package Schematic Shows.
The Ultimate's Therapy Systems Side by Side
The figures below come from the current Ultimate spec sheet and from Ella's Ultimate walkthrough video. Where the sources give no figure, the cell says not listed.
| System | Jets on the spec sheet | Area it works on | How you control it | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seat hydro massage | 11 seat jets | Back and hips, as described in the video | On/off push control plus an intensity dial | The back, including the upper back as far as the jets reach on your body |
| Independent hydro foot and calf massage | 2 calf jets and 4 foot jets | Calves and feet | Its own push button and its own intensity dial | A foot spa with only the footwell filled |
| Air massage | 17 jets (9 seat jets and 8 foot jets) | Seat and foot areas | Three-speed push control | An air massage that can run alongside the hydro systems |
| LED chromatherapy light | Not listed (it is a light, not a jet system) | Not listed | On/off push control | Setting the mood for the bath |
| Heated seat and backrest (optional) | Not listed (it uses surface heater pads, not jets) | Seat and backrest surfaces | Heat keypad | Warmth against the seat and backrest |
What this means for you: if your goal is your back, the seat hydro massage is the system doing the work, and it is already part of the Ultimate. The foot and calf system is a separate circuit with its own pump, so running it alone does nothing for your back. The air massage is listed with seat and foot jets, and the heated seat and backrest is an optional feature that has to be on your order. None of the published sources ranks one system as an upper back specialist, so treat the seat hydro massage as the back system and confirm the exact jet positions before you rely on it for a specific spot.
Why the Seat Hydro Massage Is the One for Your Back
The walkthrough video names the controls on the Ultimate's deck in order from front to back: the LED chromatherapy button, the three-speed air massage button, the hydro massage button for the back and the hips, the hydro intensity dial for the seat and hips, the independent foot massage button, and the intensity dial for the foot massage. That is the clearest statement in the sources about which system reaches the back. The spec sheet supports it with the hardware list for the hydro massage: a hydro massage pump, an intensity dial air control, ozone sterilization, 11 seat jets and an on/off push control.
The intensity dial is how you tune the feel on your back. In the video, turning the dial up allows more air into the jet stream and turning it down reduces the amount of air. Start low, settle against the backrest, and bring the dial up until the pressure feels right.
One honest limit: the sources describe the hydro jets as working on the back and hips, and they stop there. The spec sheet's dimension drawings are image pages, and the schematic itself tells readers to refer to the technical drawing for jet details. If upper back coverage between the shoulder blades is the deciding factor for you, ask your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 to confirm where the highest back jets sit on the Ultimate before your order is finalized.
Fill Level Decides Whether the Back Jets Can Run
The back jets are the highest hydro jets in the tub, so they are the last ones to go under water. The Ultimate video is specific: for a full body soak the water needs to be 2 inches above the highest jets before you turn on the hydro pump. This matters for two reasons.
- A jet above the waterline sprays out into the room and not into the bath, which is how bathroom floors get wet.
- A pump started with jets above the waterline risks a dry run. A dry run damages the pump permanently, and that damage is not covered.
This is also why a footwell fill is not a back session. For the foot spa you fill only to just below the seat and just above the hydro calf jets, then press the foot button, and the seat jets stay off because they are on a different pump. The routine is covered in How Do I Use Only the Foot Massage Without Filling the Whole Tub?, and the reasoning behind the separate pump is in Independent Foot Massage: A Foot Spa Without Filling the Whole Tub.
A Simple Back Massage Routine on the Ultimate
These steps follow the order shown in the Ultimate walkthrough video.
- Step in over the low threshold, sit down, and keep your feet and knees clear as the door closes. Secure the door with the chrome locking handle.
- Close both 2 inch drains.
- Turn on the water at the five piece fast fill faucet, hot on the left and cold on the right, and adjust the temperature carefully so you do not scald yourself.
- Fill until the water is 2 inches above the highest jets.
- Press the hydro massage button for the back and the hips.
- Set the strength with the hydro intensity dial for the seat and hips.
- Press the button again to switch the system off when you are done.
You can add the air massage or the foot massage at any point, because each has its own button.
What the Other Systems Add to a Back Session
The Ultimate spec sheet lists the in-line water heater, rated 9A and 1000W, with the hydro foot and calf massage system. That is worth knowing if you like a long session, and the team can tell you how the heater behaves on your tub. The air massage is a three-speed system with an auto purge that activates 20 minutes after the pump shuts down. The spec sheet names two optional features, the heated seat and backrest and a digital controller. If warmth against your back matters to you, make sure the heated seat and backrest appears on your order.
For electrical planning, the spec sheet calls for dedicated GFCI protected 110/120V line or lines, and it carries a note that the amp value for each pump may change based on availability and should be verified before purchase. The full push-control diagram is published for the Transfer60, TransferXXL and Ultimate, and the therapy system schematics index helps you match the diagram to the package on your order.
