What Stepping on the Drain Actually Breaks

The gravity drain works as a chain. Turning the handle at the overflow pulls the drain cable, the cable moves the lever inside the drain body, and the lever lifts the plug. A foot on the open plug forces that lever, so afterward the plug drops back down instead of staying up, or a small brass piece comes out of the drain opening.
