Why Won't the Pump on My Ella Pet Spa Turn On?

When the pump on an Ella Pet Spa will not turn on, the two conditions in the published owner rules come first: the tub must be on its own dedicated 120 volt, 20 amp GFCI-protected line installed by a licensed electrician, and the water must be above the sidewall jets before any pump starts. Press the GFCI test button and confirm it trips into reset mode, close the drain fully, fill until the jets are covered, and try again. If both conditions are met and the pump still does nothing, open a ticket at ellasbubbles.com/support so the team can work through it with you. The circuit and plumbing requirements the Pet Spa was designed around are laid out in How Do I Plumb the Drain and Water Supply for an Ella Pet Spa?.

Condition One: A Dedicated GFCI Circuit That Passes Its Own Test

The Pet Spa requires one dedicated 20 amp, 120 volt GFCI circuit, run by a licensed electrician to the planned location, ideally before delivery. Dedicated means the line serves the Pet Spa and nothing else. A grooming shop that has the tub sharing a circuit with dryers or other equipment, or a home install that borrowed a nearby outlet, is not meeting the published rule, and that is the first thing to put right with the electrician. The owner's manual also states that the Pet Spa is not intended for outdoor use, because its electrical and water pump requirements call for a protected indoor location such as a home, garage or store.

The owner rules ask you to press the GFCI test button on the device protecting the Pet Spa's line. It should trip into reset mode, and pressing reset should restore power. If pressing test does nothing, turn off the power and do not use the tub until the cause is found and fixed by a licensed electrician. A GFCI that will not reset, or that trips again right after you reset it, is something to report to the electrician and in your ticket rather than something to work around. Ella does not send technicians, so the electrical work on the line is done by your local licensed electrician, and the support team guides the diagnosis.

Condition Two: Water Above the Sidewall Jets

The Pet Spa has 20 fully adjustable sidewall jets, and the water has to be above those jets before any pump starts. A pump called with the jets exposed will not run under the published rules, so if you pressed the control with the tub partly filled, the empty tub is the explanation rather than a fault. Fill until every sidewall jet is covered, then try the control again. This is the same point the installation sequence ends on: connect the drain and the supply lines, then fill above the jets and test everything, as described in How Do You Install and Plumb the Ella Pet Spa Grooming Tub?.

If the tub will not hold water up to the jets, look at the drain before you look at the pump. The 2 inch drain is cable-operated, and it must close completely to hold water and open completely to drain. The manual's rule for the drain plug is that the screw on the plug is adjusted first and then the backnut is tightened securely, because a loose backnut comes apart over time and falls down the drain. Never step on an open drain. A drain that is not closing all the way will keep the water below the jets no matter how long the faucet runs.

Run the Checks in This Order

  1. Confirm the Pet Spa is indoors and on its own dedicated 120 volt, 20 amp GFCI line. If you are not sure, ask the electrician who installed it.
  2. Press the GFCI test button. It should trip into reset mode. If it does not, turn the power off and stop until a licensed electrician has found the cause.
  3. Press reset and confirm the outlet is live again.
  4. Close the drain completely and fill the tub until all of the sidewall jets are under water.
  5. Try the pump control again.
  6. If it still does not start, stop there and open a ticket. Do not open the unit or work on the pump yourself.

If the Pump Has Never Run Since Installation

On a brand new install, a pump that has never started usually points back to the rough-in. The Pet Spa needs three things within reach of its location: a drain connection, hot and cold water, and power for the microbubble pump. The power is the piece most often left for later, because the drain under the unit gets all the attention during planning. Ask the support team for the drain location drawings and the owner's manual, confirm with the electrician that the dedicated circuit was actually run to the outlet the tub is plugged into, and keep hair dryers, lamps, phones and radios at least 3 feet from the tub as the manual requires. Where the drain sits and why the door hinge side does not move it is covered in Where the Pet Spa Drain Is and Whether the Door Side Changes It.

What to Have Ready for Your Ticket

Open a ticket at ellasbubbles.com/support or call (800) 480-6850 with your order details from where you purchased, the hinge side of your door, and a short account of the checks above: whether the GFCI tripped when you pressed test and reset normally afterward, how high the water was when you tried the pump, whether the pump has ever run before, and what you saw or heard when you pressed the control. Photos of the GFCI device and the outlet the Pet Spa is plugged into help the team confirm the circuit. If the electrician found a problem on the line, include what was found. The full feature list, including the microbubble handset with ozone, the thermostatic faucet and the removable platform, is in Ella Pet Spa: Microbubble Grooming Tub Specs, and day-to-day habits that keep hair out of the drain and the drain closing properly are the same ones that keep the pump starting bath after bath.

Common Questions

Does the Pet Spa really need its own electrical circuit?
Yes. The published requirement is one dedicated 120 volt, 20 amp GFCI-protected circuit installed by a licensed electrician. A shared circuit or a borrowed outlet does not meet that rule and is the first thing to correct when a pump will not start.
What should happen when I press the GFCI test button?
It should trip into reset mode, and pressing reset should restore power. If pressing test does not trip the device, turn off the power and do not use the Pet Spa until a licensed electrician has found and fixed the cause.
Why does the water level matter before the pump starts?
The owner rules require the water to be above the sidewall jets before any pump runs. With the jets exposed the pump will not start, so fill until all 20 sidewall jets are covered and try the control again.
The tub will not fill above the jets, so what do I check?
Check the drain. It must close completely to hold water, and the drain plug screw is adjusted first with the backnut then tightened securely so it does not loosen and fall down the drain. Never step on an open drain.
Can I run the Pet Spa outdoors or on a patio?
No. The owner's manual states the Pet Spa is not intended for outdoor use, because its electrical and water pump requirements call for a protected location such as a home, garage or store.
Will someone come out to repair the pump?
Ella does not send technicians. Electrical work on the line is done by your local licensed electrician, and if the pump itself needs attention the support team works through it with you by ticket at ellasbubbles.com/support.

About this guide. Answers in the Ella’s Bubbles Support Center are compiled from real conversations with tub owners, our technicians’ notes and the product documentation, then reviewed by our team. Tub models and options have evolved over the years, so a detail here may differ slightly from your exact tub. If something looks different on yours, send us your serial number and a specialist will confirm it for your model.
