Every Ella walk-in tub is published with three outside dimensions, and the current specification drawing for your model is the authority on all of them. The width is the short side that runs from the front of the tub to the back wall, the length is the long side that runs along the wall, and the height runs from the floor to the top of the rim. Listings usually give the figures as width, length and height, but the order can vary, so read the labels rather than assuming. The size in a model's name is a rounded nominal figure, so always measure your alcove, your doorway and your drain location against the actual inch values on the spec drawing rather than the name.

Reading the Three Numbers

The most common mix-up is treating the larger figure as the width. On a walk-in tub the larger figure is almost always the length, because the tub sits lengthwise in the alcove the way a conventional bathtub does. A listing that reads 52 long by 32 deep by 42 high describes a tub that is 52 inches long along the wall, 32 inches from front to back and 42 inches tall. Height matters more on a walk-in tub than on a standard bath because the walls are tall enough for seated bathing, so compare it with any window sill, vanity top or fixture beside the tub.

A few verified examples show how the actual figures relate to the nominal size:

  • Ella Petite: 27.5 inches wide, 52 inches long, 35 inches high. It is sold as a 28-inch tub, which is the nominal size.
  • Ella Elite: 30 inches wide, 52 inches long, 35 inches high.
  • Ella Lounger: 26 inches wide, 60 inches long, 40 inches high.
  • LayDown 30 by 60: 30 inches wide, 60 inches long, 21 inches high.
  • Big4One: 39.5 inches high.

A tub described as a 5-foot tub can measure 59.5 inches on the drawing, and a tub sold as 28 inches can measure 27.5 inches. Those half-inch differences are normal rounding in the product name, not an error in the drawing. When a metric figure printed beside an inch figure on a spec sheet disagrees with it, the inch figure is the correct one.

The Interior Figures on the Drawing

The specification drawing also carries the inside dimensions a bather cares about: the seat width, the seat height, the width of the door opening and the measurement across the front of the tub where the door sits. These vary from model to model, so read them from the drawing for the exact tub you are considering rather than from a family overview. As one example, the seat on several models is 18 inches wide. Where to Find the Specification Drawing

Each model has a specification sheet with a dimensioned drawing. It is published alongside the model's listing, and the same drawings are collected in the digital brochures for each tub family. Use the most recent sheet, because older brochures and videos occasionally carry figures that have since been corrected.

How to Check the Fit

  1. Write down the actual width, length and height from the current spec sheet for your model.
  2. Measure the alcove between finished walls and compare it to the tub length. Tubs shorter than 60 inches include an extension panel to fill the gap to the wall.
  3. Measure from the back wall out into the room and compare it to the tub width, then add room for the door to swing on outward-swing models.
  4. Measure the narrowest doorway and hallway on the delivery route and compare them to the two smaller tub dimensions.
  5. Confirm the drain side. The door and the drains are on opposite sides, so a right-side door tub drains on the left and a left-side door tub drains on the right as you face the tub.
