Why do my walk-in tub jet and blower motors stop and restart?

Updated November 2026

Jet and blower motors that stop and restart on their own are usually doing one of two normal things, or they are being switched by the blue control box under the tub. One restart is normal on any air massage tub, because the Auto Purge runs by itself about 20 minutes after the air is turned off, and the control box also shuts the pumps off after 20 minutes of continuous running. Anything beyond those two patterns traces to a second touch on a push control, a tripped GFCI, a loose air hose behind a button, or the control box itself, and Why Did My Walk-In Tub Jets Shut Off in the Middle of a Bath? walks through those checks for a stop during a soak. This page sorts every stop-and-restart pattern by what you see and hear, so you know whether to wait, press once, or cut power and open a ticket.

Two Restarts That Are Built in

Before you pull the access panel, rule out the two things a healthy tub does on its own.

  • The Auto Purge. On a tub with the three-speed air massage, the blower starts by itself about 20 minutes after the air pump is switched off, runs for 120 seconds to blow residual water out of the air lines, and shuts off. It cannot be stopped, skipped or delayed, it runs once, and it is normal even when the bather is still in the tub. If the blower came on once after the bath and stopped about two minutes later, nothing is wrong. Can I Stop the Air Blower Turning On After My Bath? explains how to plan the bath so the burst is not a surprise.
  • The 20-minute timer. The control box shuts the pumps off automatically after 20 minutes of continuous running, and starting the system again begins a new cycle. If the jets always stop at about the same point in a long soak and start right back up with one touch, that is the timer, not a fault.

A light humming with nothing switched on is the ozone generator running by itself on a hydro massage tub, and it is normal too. It is not a motor restarting.

A Stop That Was Really a Second Touch

Every therapy has its own on and off control on the deck, and none of them needs a sequence to stop. That means a hand, elbow, heel or towel brushing a button while you shift in the seat ends a massage you did not mean to end, and a second brush restarts it, which is exactly what a random stop and restart looks like.

  • Hydro massage is one press on and one press off. If the pump stopped, press the water button once more, gently, and it restarts.
  • Air massage cycles through three speeds on push controls: the first press is high, the second is medium, the third is low, and a fourth press turns the system off. If the air was already running on low, a single accidental touch shuts it down. On the digital touchpad the air is turned off by holding the air bubble icon for two seconds.
  • The in-line heater has no switch of its own. It runs only while the hydro pump runs and stops the moment the hydro stops, so water that stopped warming when the jets went quiet is the heater following the pump, not a second fault.

The push controls need only a gentle touch. Pressing too hard or too deep may damage the internal mechanism, and a soft push with the palm of the hand works well for anyone with arthritis or limited mobility.

When the Control Box Is Doing the Switching

If the motors stop and restart with nobody near the buttons, and the pattern does not match the purge or the timer, look at the blue control box. Each pump plugs into it as a separate 110 volt load, drawn on the component diagram as Load 1 and Load 2, and the box switches those loads through relays when you press the deck controls. The push buttons themselves send only an air signal down a small tube to the box. A pump that shuts off and starts again on its own therefore points at the box rather than at the deck buttons or anything in the water lines.

The green LED on the box is the first thing to read. Lit means power is reaching the box. Dark on a live outlet means either the box's power cord is not seated or the box itself has failed, and nothing you press on the deck will work until that light is lit. Work through the power path in this order:

  1. Reset the GFCI and confirm the outlet is live.
  2. Switch the tub's dedicated breakers back on at the panel.
  3. Remove the access panel and look for the green LED on the blue control box under the tub.
  4. Confirm each pump cord is seated in its socket on the box.

The box comes with one of two power inlets, a standard three-prong 15 amp connector on one version and a 20 amp plug with one vertical and one horizontal blade on the other, so check that yours is plugged into the matching receptacle. Why do my tub motors cycle on and off with no green LED? covers the dark-light case in full, including the master control box video that shows both inlets and every socket.

A Blower That Keeps Coming Back

One purge after the bath is normal. A blower that runs past its two minutes, or purges twice in the same hour, is the control box failing to shut the air pump off. A blower that instead keeps starting every hour or two often has a simpler cause: a chrome push button stuck down. The button sends its signal through a small red air tube to a nipple on the control box, and a button held down by an air lock keeps that signal on. Pull that tube off its nipple at the box, let the button pop up, then push the tube back on.

The opposite fault, a hose that has worked loose at the button or at the box nipple, makes a button do nothing at all. Confirm each hose is seated firmly at both ends while the panel is off.

When Only One System Stops and Restarts

Ella builds each massage system with its own pump. On an Independent Foot package the foot and calf jets run on a second hydro pump with its own button, its own intensity dial and its own circuit. If the seat jets run a full session and only the foot jets stop, the control box is powering one hydro pump correctly and the fault sits in the foot pump, its button, its tube or its circuit. One working massage beside one silent massage usually points to a single pump, cord or relay rather than to the box as a whole. A pump that stops after only a few minutes once the system is warm, with the power light still on, is the sign of a pump overheating rather than a timer. Why Do My Walk-In Tub Foot Jets Shut Off and Restart Randomly? applies the pump isolation method to the foot system.

The same logic holds for a tub that has just come back into service. If a pump shuts off and restarts by itself during the first vinegar flush, that points to the control box, not to the cleaning. How Do I Start Using a Walk-In Tub That Sat Unused for Years? has the restart checklist.

When to Open a Ticket

If the LED stays dark on a live outlet, or the cycling continues after the GFCI, breakers, LED and pump cords all check out, switch the tub off at its dedicated breaker and leave it off. Open a ticket at ellasbubbles.com/support or call your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 with your model and serial number, a photo of the blue control box showing the LED, and a description of what the motors did and when. The team determines whether a pump, a cord or the control box needs attention. Ella does not send technicians, so a licensed local electrician does any swap.

Common Questions

Is it normal for the blower to start after I get out of the tub?
Yes. About 20 minutes after the air pump is switched off, the Auto Purge starts on its own and runs for 120 seconds to blow residual water out of the air lines. It runs once, stops by itself, and cannot be turned off or delayed. It is normal even if it starts while someone is still in the tub.
Why do the jets stop after about 20 minutes every time?
The control box shuts the pumps off automatically after 20 minutes of continuous running. Starting the system again begins a new cycle. If the stop always comes at the same point in a long soak and one touch restarts the jets, that is the timer and not a fault.
Why does the air massage stop when I barely touch the button?
On push controls the air button steps through high, medium and low, and the fourth press turns the system off, so a light brush while the air is on low shuts it down. The controls need only a gentle touch, and pressing too hard may damage the internal mechanism. On the digital touchpad the air is turned off by holding the air bubble icon for two seconds.
What does a dark green LED on the control box mean?
The green LED lights when power reaches the blue control box. If it stays dark while the outlet is live, the box's power cord is not seated or the box has failed, and nothing you press on the deck will work until it is lit. Check the GFCI, the dedicated breakers and the cord before opening a ticket.
Why do only the foot jets stop and restart on their own?
On an Independent Foot package the foot and calf jets run on their own hydro pump with their own button, dial and circuit. If the seat jets keep running, the control box is powering one pump correctly and the fault is in the foot pump, its button, its tube or its circuit. The 20-minute timer and a second touch on the foot button also look random.
Why does the blower keep starting every hour or two?
A blower that purges once after the bath is normal, but one that keeps starting every hour or two often has a chrome push button stuck down by an air lock in its red tube. Pull that tube off its nipple at the control box, let the button pop up, and push the tube back on. If the cycling continues, switch the tub off at its breaker and open a ticket.
