The intensity dial on an Ella hydro massage tub is an air control on a small hose, not an electrical control. Turning it up lets more air into the jet stream for a stronger, livelier flow, turning it down removes air for a gentler one, and at no point does it change the speed of the pump, as What Is the Intensity Control Dial on a Walk-In Tub? explains. When the jets feel weak on a new install, the cause is almost always the water level, the dial, a clogged pump inlet cover or a closed foot nozzle rather than the pump itself.
Two Different Air Controls on the Deck
Owners often call the chrome dial the air control, and the name fits, but it is not the control for the air massage system. An Ella tub can carry two systems with the word air attached to them, and they behave differently.
- The hydro massage runs from the Water button. The pump draws bath water in through the inlet cover and pushes it out through the jets at a steady rate. The dial sits on an air line that feeds into that water stream, so it sets how much air is mixed into the water, which is what you feel as a firmer or softer massage.
- The air massage runs from the Air button and has no dial. On push controls the first press is high speed, the second press is medium, the third press is low and a fourth press turns the system off. On the digital touchpad you touch the air bubble icon once to start, use plus and minus for intensity, and hold the icon for two seconds to stop.
So if you pressed the Air button and then turned the dial expecting a change, nothing will happen, because the dial only serves the hydro jets. The first video on this page shows the dial being turned while the hydro massage runs, and the second shows where it sits alongside both the push controls and the digital touchpad, where the hydro button starts the pump and the dial still sets the strength. The common operating questions page sorts out which button does what.
Which Way Is Up, and What You Should Feel
Ella's published guidance describes one direction of travel. Turning the dial up opens the air path and introduces more air, so each jet delivers a livelier, stronger flow. Turning it down closes the air path for a softer massage, and turning it all the way down leaves the jets barely perceptible while the pump keeps running. The pump itself never speeds up or slows down. That is why the dial is the first thing to check when jets feel weak: if someone turned it down, the jets will feel gentle no matter how hard the pump is working. It also explains why the dial feels different from the air massage. The air massage steps through three fixed speeds, while the hydro dial moves smoothly from barely there to full strength.
If turning the dial up seems to make no difference, or the jets feel weaker than you expected with the dial at the top, do not assume the pump is faulty. Work through the checklist below in order, because each step rules out one cause that Ella's guidance names.
The New-Install Checklist, in Order
- Fill to at least 2 inches above the highest jets before you press the Water button, and keep the water there. A pump is designed to run with the jets submerged. With the water too low the jets spray instead of pushing through water, and running a pump dry causes permanent damage that is not covered by warranty.
- Turn the dial all the way up and feel the difference at the seat jets.
- Check for a second dial. Tubs with independent foot massage have a second pump, a separate foot button and a second dial for the foot and calf jets, so the seat jets and the foot jets are set separately. The Ultimate includes independent foot massage as standard and the Capri offers it as an option.
- Check any diverter switches. On the Standard60 the diverter switches select the foot and leg jets only, the back jets only, or both, so a group of jets that seems dead may simply be switched away.
- Clean the pump inlet cover inside the tub. Clear hair and debris, look for anything drawn against the intake such as a soap dish, and wipe the cover with a non-abrasive towel. A starved pump feels weak at every jet.
- Check each foot jet's center nozzle, which is a valve. Turn it to open the jet fully, and rotate any seat jet face that has been closed. How Do I Adjust or Close Individual Hydro Jets on My Walk-In Tub? shows the nozzle and how to free a stiff one.
- If the pump runs but the dial changes nothing, remove the access panel and reseat the small air hose firmly at the pump. A hose that has slipped off leaves the dial with nothing to control, and this is almost never an electrical problem.
- Run the vinegar flush: mix 2 cups of white vinegar with 2 cups of water, fill the tub to 1 inch above the highest jets, add the mixture, run the tub for 10 minutes, then drain. Repeat it if the jets release flakes or slime. Scale and residue in the jet faces and lines weaken the flow, and bath bombs clog the jets.
The order matters. Water level comes first because it protects the pump, the dials and switches come next because they cost nothing to check, and the flush comes last because it only helps once the mechanical causes are ruled out. Why Are My Walk-In Tub Jets So Weak? covers the same causes for a tub that has been in service for a while, including the monthly cleaning that keeps the inlet cover clear.
A Stiff Dial and the Hose Behind It
The dial needs very little care. Wipe it with the same mild, non-abrasive cleaner you use on the deck and keep abrasive pads away from the chrome. A dial that feels stiff is usually bound by excess silicone around its base, and clearing that silicone frees it. Behind the deck, the dial is nothing more than a valve on a hose to the pump. Because it carries air rather than current, a dial that does nothing while the pump is running points at that hose, not at wiring, the control box or the pump motor. The in-line heater and the ozone generator run automatically with the hydro pump, so a pump that runs and holds the water temperature but gives weak jets is still usually an air, water level or blockage matter. What Are Hydro Massage Jets on a Walk-In Tub? explains what the pump, heater and ozone do together, and notes that jet counts belong to the therapy package rather than the model name, which is why the team asks for your package name on a ticket.
When It Is Time for a Ticket
Open a ticket if the pressure stays weak at every jet with the dial up, the inlet clear, the flush done and the water level right, if the pump surges to full strength and then drops off, or if the jets only start after priming, which can point to an airlock. Reach your Ella dealer or the team at ellasbubbles.com/support or (800) 480-6850 with your model and serial number, your therapy package name, which jets are affected, the dial position, the water level you used, a photo of the pump inlet cover, and a short video with sound of the jets running. The team confirms the cause from that. Where a part is at fault it ships under the warranty, and a local licensed plumber or electrician does any labor with free technical support behind them.
