What Is the Shower Column Kit on a Walk-In Tub?

The shower column kit, also called the rain shower column or overhead shower kit, is a telescoping deck-mounted stainless steel column with a 10 inch pivoting rain shower head. It connects to the diverter of an Ella 2-piece or 5-piece fast-fill faucet, so a walk-in tub owner can take a seated or standing shower under a rain head instead of relying on the hand shower alone.

The rain head pivots and the column telescopes, so the same kit serves a seated or a standing shower.

How It Works

The column base mounts in the pre-drilled hand shower hole on the tub deck, and its included 1/2 inch braided supply line runs to the faucet diverter behind the tub. The upper section telescopes so the rain head sits anywhere from 37 to 64 inches above the deck, with a 15 inch horizontal reach, in chrome or brushed nickel. The faucet's diverter selects either the rain head or the pull-out hand shower, and the two cannot spray at the same time; that is by design, not a defect. The hand shower and hose are not included, because the kit uses the ones from your 2-piece or 5-piece faucet set. The column anchors to the wall with one of two pipe connectors: a short connector adjustable from 2 1/4 to 3 1/4 inches when the column attaches directly to the wall, or a long connector adjustable from 4 to 5 inches for alcove installs with an extension panel.

Which Ella Models Have It

The kit fits only tubs with an Ella 2-piece or 5-piece deck-mount fast-fill faucet, so it is tied to the faucet rather than to a model. A tub ordered without a faucet, or one fitted with a wall-mount faucet, cannot take the deck-mounted kit. The 2-piece versus 5-piece faucet guide shows how each diverter switches between the hand shower and the rain head. On order paperwork the kit appears under invoice code EC2020.

What to Know as an Owner

Timing matters most: the kit must be installed before the tub's final installation, because the connection is made behind the tub. If your tub is already in place, talk with your installer and your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 before ordering. The full sequence, including the connector choice, is in installing the shower column kit, and the seated shower routine is in showering in your walk-in tub. A drip after shutoff or a damaged section is covered in shower column drips after shutoff and replacement parts. For a ticket, have your model and serial number, your faucet type, the finish, and a photo of the column and its deck connection.

Common Questions

What is the Ella shower column kit?
It is a telescoping stainless column with a 10 inch pivoting rain shower head that mounts to the tub deck and connects to the diverter of an Ella 2-piece or 5-piece fast-fill faucet. The head adjusts from 37 to 64 inches above the deck and comes in chrome or brushed nickel.
Can I shower in a walk-in tub with the column kit?
Yes. The rain head pivots and the column telescopes, so you can shower seated or standing, and the faucet's hand shower stays on the column for rinsing. A glass screen keeps the spray inside the tub.
Can the rain head and the hand shower run at the same time?
No. The diverter selects one head at a time, so the two showerheads cannot spray simultaneously. That is how the kit is designed and it is not a fault.
Does the shower column kit have to go on before the tub is installed?
Yes. The connection to the faucet is made behind the tub, so the kit needs access to the back of the tub and must be installed before the tub's final installation. If the tub is already in, speak with your installer and the team before ordering.
Does the kit include the hand shower?
No. The kit does not include the pull-out hose or hand shower; it uses the hand shower and hose from your Ella 2-piece or 5-piece faucet set.
