The width by length listed for an Ella walk-in tub describes the exterior footprint the tub occupies on the floor, not the bathing space inside. The interior is described separately by seat width, seat length, the interior floor size on a LayDown, and the depth from the seat or floor to the overflow. Exterior Size: The Number to Use for Fit

The width and length on a product listing and spec sheet are the outside of the acrylic shell. That is the number to check against your alcove, and it is the number your installer compares to every doorway and hallway on the path into the bathroom. An Ella tub shorter than 60 inches includes an extension panel that closes the gap at the wall, so a 52 inch tub still fits a standard 60 inch alcove. The video shows where to find the specific dimensions for a model: open the download tab for the tub on the website. It also gives the Petite as an example, listed at 28 inches wide with an actual exterior width of 27 1/2 inches. The figure the video gives for the Elite is an older one. The current spec sheet lists the Elite at 30 inches wide, so use the spec sheet for whichever model you are measuring for.

Interior Space: The Numbers to Use for Comfort

Inside the shell, the space is described by the seat width, the length of the seat, and the depth from the top of the seat to the center of the overflow. On seated tubs the seat-to-overflow figure runs roughly 15 to 18 inches across the mid-size models. Because the published depth is measured to the overflow, it is the real depth you can fill to, not the height of the rim. The Monaco is a good example of how the two sets of numbers work together: its exterior is 32 inches wide by 52 inches long, its seat is 23 inches wide, and its step-in threshold is approximately 4 inches. The LayDown 30x60 shows both figures side by side. Its exterior is 30 inches wide by 60 inches long and 21 inches tall. Its flat interior floor is 46 by 20 inches, the soaking space widens to about 53 by 25 1/2 inches above the floor, and the water reaches 15 3/4 inches from the floor to the overflow. Why the Inside Is Smaller Than the Outside

The shell has a deck around the top, sloped ends and a molded seat on seated models, so the interior is smaller than the exterior in both directions. The LayDown spec sheet uses the same template as the seated tubs and prints a seat line even though LayDown tubs have no seat, so ignore that line and use the floor figure instead.

How to Compare the Interior to Your Body

  • Sit in a chair facing a wall and measure your shoulder width and hip width while seated.
  • Measure from your head to your feet in that seated, relaxed position for the interior length.
  • Note your seated torso length and compare it with the seat-to-overflow figure for the model.
  • Fill no higher than the center of the drain handle, since the overflow carries away anything that rises above it.

Yes. The listed dimensions are the exterior footprint of the acrylic shell, and they are the numbers to check against your alcove and the doorways on the way in. The interior seating and footwell space is described separately.

On every Ella tub the published depth is measured to the overflow, because water rises to the overflow opening and then runs out. On a seated tub the number to use is the seat-to-overflow measurement, which runs roughly 15 to 18 inches on the mid-size models.
Does a 52 inch tub fit a 60 inch alcove?
Yes. Any Ella tub shorter than 60 inches includes an extension panel that closes the gap at the wall, so a 52 inch model such as the Monaco fits a standard 60 inch alcove. Confirm the exterior width and the door swing with your installer as well.
How do I know whether I will fit comfortably inside?
