How Do I Tighten a Loose Faucet Cartridge on My Walk-In Tub?

A faucet cartridge that feels loose is tightened from the tub deck with the same tools used to replace it: a 3 mm Allen wrench for the handle, plus a 17 mm socket wrench on the 5-piece faucet. Is It the Handle or the Cartridge That Is Loose?

Two different fasteners can make an Ella fast-fill faucet feel loose, and they are fixed at different depths. Sort out which one you have before you pick up a wrench.

• A loose handle. The Allen bolt that holds the handle to the cartridge stem has backed off. On the 2-piece faucet it sits under a decorative bolt cover on top of the spout handle, and on the 5-piece faucet each red or blue handle has its own bolt under its colored cap. • A loose cartridge. The handle bolt is tight, yet the handle and everything under it still rock as one piece, or the faucet drips when it is off. The quick test is to pop off the cover or cap and check the bolt. If it is snug and the movement remains, keep going.

Before You Start

1. Identify your faucet. The 2-piece fast-fill faucet has a single lever: lift for on, lever left for hot, right for cold, lever down for off, with a diverter button under the spout for the hand shower. The 5-piece fast-fill faucet has a separate red hot handle and blue cold handle with a diverter lever between them. Both include a hand shower on a 5 foot retractable stainless braided hose.

Tightening the Cartridge on the 2-Piece Single-Lever Faucet

The two-piece cartridge video shows this exact sequence on a deck-mounted faucet.

1. Remove the decorative bolt cover, insert the 3 mm Allen wrench, loosen the Allen bolt and lift off the spout handle.
2. Unscrew and remove the brass escutcheon plate. The brass locking collar is now exposed over the cartridge, and if the collar has backed off, this is the source of the play.
3. Rather than snugging a collar over a cartridge that may have shifted, loosen and remove the collar and lift out the cartridge. Look at the two guide posts on the cartridge and the matching receptacles in the spout housing.
4. Set the cartridge back in with the two guide posts lined up in their receptacles. The cartridge seats correctly only when the posts are in the correct position.
5. Replace and tighten the brass locking collar securely without over torquing.
6. Replace and hand tighten the escutcheon plate.
7. Set the handle back on top of the cartridge stem, tighten the Allen bolt securely without over torquing, and replace the bolt cover. The red side should be on the left for hot and the blue on the right for cold.

Tightening the Cartridge on the 5-Piece Faucet

On the 5-piece set the cartridge is threaded into the valve body, so a loose cartridge here is one that has unscrewed part way. The 5-piece cartridge video walks through the removal and refit.

1. Remove the red or blue cap on the handle, loosen the bolt with the 3 mm Allen wrench and lift off the handle.
2. Remove the plastic collar under the handle.
3. Fit the 17 mm socket wrench over the cartridge and loosen and remove it rather than only snugging it.
4. Check for debris, foreign objects or calcification. If needed, clean with a soft brush and rinse. Calcification on the cartridge is also the usual cause of a handle that squeaks or feels rough, and cleaning it often saves the cartridge.
5. Replace the cartridge and tighten it with the socket. Do not over torque.
6. Replace the plastic collar. On the 5-piece set the collar must be in place before the handle goes back on.
7. Put the handle back on, making sure it faces the correct position, tighten the Allen bolt firmly without over torquing, and replace the colored cap. Repeat on the other handle if both sides feel loose.

How Tight Is Tight Enough, and When to Replace Instead

Loose Parts Nearby That Are Not the Cartridge

• The hand shower holder. If the small base that the pull-out hand shower rests in has lifted or twists on the deck, the nut that secures it from underneath has unscrewed, and the fix is under the deck rather than at the cartridge.
