PVC or Acrylic Panels vs Tile: Which Shower Wall Is Better?

The Wall Systems Side by Side

What these differences mean for your bathroom: every Ella panel option arrives as a large finished piece with the surface already sealed, so the wall goes up as a handful of glue-up parts and the only joints to seal are the panel seams and the edge at the tub or base. Tile is built up one piece at a time on a substrate you have to prepare first, and the finished wall carries grout lines that the Ella panel systems are designed to avoid. If you want the subway tile look, the SMC kit gives you the pattern pressed into a panel. If you want stone, cultured marble or the printed and engraved acrylic finishes give it without the substrate work.

Why Grout Is the Heart of the Comparison

The SMC kit goes up bottom row first on 100 percent silicone with overlapping flanges, so there are no grout lines to maintain. The PVC tiles in the video on this page fit together snugly with a tongue and groove connection, and the installer lays a thin bead of silicone at each joint to make the seal watertight. Cultured marble panels have factory finished edges made for seamless joining, and the acrylic 3-panel kit is finished at its edges with molding or caulking rather than grout. Tile, by contrast, depends on grout between every piece. Ella's documents do not describe how grout ages, so weigh that with your tile installer, but the absence of grout is the single biggest practical difference between the two approaches, both on installation day and every cleaning day after it.

What Goes over What

One reason homeowners look at panels is that they cover a wall that already has tile on it. The acrylic 3-panel kit glues to drywall or over existing tile and can be cut to fit. Cultured marble panels glue over drywall, plaster, painted walls, Durock or existing tile. The PVC tiles can be placed over new or existing surfaces. A panel job can therefore skip the demolition that a new tile job normally starts with. The one surface that must never be covered is the shower floor: an Ella acrylic base is a finished walking surface with its slope, threshold and drain molded in, and tile, thinset or a waterproofing membrane should not be applied on top of it, as explained in Can You Tile Over an Ella Acrylic Shower Base?. Whatever wall finish you pick, panels or tile, it comes down over the edge of the base so water runs onto the pan rather than behind it. On a walk-in tub the same rule applies: the wall system must match the tub footprint exactly and overlap the tile flange and deck so water stays in front of the wall.

Cutting, Edges and Fit

Each material cuts differently, and that affects who can do the work and how the finished edge looks.

• PVC tiles: measure carefully, score and snap to get the precise piece, apply adhesive to the back, then set and snap into place. This is the simplest cut of the group.
• Cultured marble: cuts with a masonry blade in a standard circular saw. A cut edge is finished with a bead of caulk or covered with a 2 inch trim piece, and Ella carries a 1 inch corner trim in 96 inch lengths and a 2 inch by 3/4 inch flat trim for the gap at the tub. Because each panel comes out of a mold, sizes are fixed, so order the size equal to or slightly larger than the wall and trim the excess.
• Acrylic panels: can be cut for an odd-shaped alcove or a window. The cut edges are finished with trim strips or sealant from a tile or building supply store, because Ella does not supply custom edge pieces. The kits' three flat panels roll and ship in a 24 by 24 by 61 inch box at 81 pounds.
• SMC panels: ship in a wooden frame with bubble wrap, foam and sealed plastic, and interlock with a tongue and groove along an integrated flange.

Before ordering any of them, measure each wall at the top, middle and bottom, use the largest figure, and note any windows, valves or niches the panel must be cut around. Finish Choices and Care

Acrylic panels come in solid white gloss, CNC engraved patterns such as herringbone, hexagon and bamboo, and high-resolution printed marble and stone looks such as the Calacatta series. The SMC kit is glossy white with a subway pattern, and the cultured marble panels are offered in a travertine look. For care, keep indoor humidity moderate, avoid abrasive cleaners and ammonia or solvent cleaners on the SMC panels, and keep panels out of direct sun and rain.
