Acrylic Shower Walls vs Tile: Which Is Better for Your Bathroom?

Updated October 2026

For most Ella bathrooms, acrylic or cultured marble wall panels are the easier material to keep watertight, because each panel arrives as a large finished piece with its surface already sealed, so the only joints are the panel seams and the edge at the tub or shower base. Tile is built up one piece at a time on a substrate you prepare, with a grout joint between every tile, which gives it more places for water to get in and more work to install. The guide Where Can I Buy Cultured Marble Shower Walls, and Is Acrylic Better? explains that the final choice comes down to the look you want, how the panels will reach your bathroom, and how you plan to cut and finish them, and this page lays those three factors out side by side so you can pick with confidence.

Why the Panel Route Is Easier to Keep Watertight

Every Ella wall option, whether the acrylic 3-panel kit, the cultured marble surround or the PVC tongue and groove tiles, goes up as a handful of glue-up parts. The surface is finished at the factory, so water can only get past the wall at a panel-to-panel seam, at the bottom edge where the wall meets the tub deck or shower base, or at an edge you cut on site around a valve, a window or a niche. Each of those gets a bead of silicone, and on the cultured marble line the corners and the gap at the tub are then covered with trim pieces that sit over the sealed joint. Tile works the other way around. Your installer prepares a rigid substrate, sets the tiles one at a time, grouts every joint, and still has to seal the joint at the base properly. The method for each of Ella's wall families is in How do I seal shower wall panels to keep water out?, and the short version is that a panel wall has far fewer places to seal, and each one is sealed with silicone rather than grout.

The first video on this page shows the PVC tongue and groove tiles going in: measure, score and snap each piece, apply adhesive to the back, lay a thin bead of silicone at each joint, then set and snap the tile into place. It is a clear picture of how little joint work a panel system needs compared with a grouted wall, and it also shows the tiles going over an existing surface rather than a freshly prepared one.

What Each Material Actually Is

  • Ella acrylic 3-panel kit: one back panel 60 inches wide and two side panels 40 inches wide, in a 98 or 105 inch height. The panels are 0.118 inch thick ABS and PMMA composite with a glossy sanitary acrylic surface that is warm to the touch. Larger acrylic panels are also offered, including 98 by 60 inch back walls and 36 to 38 by 96 to 98 inch side walls, and the three-piece acrylic wall systems come in white, CNC and digital print finishes with ADA accessories available.
  • Ella cultured marble panels: a natural quartz and granite composite with a gel coat surface, which gives the look and feel of natural stone while staying durable and easy to clean. The surrounds come as eight, six or four panel sets, and the panels glue over drywall, plaster, painted walls, Durock or even existing tile.
  • Ella PVC tongue and groove tiles: grout-less tiles that fit together snugly with a tongue and groove connection over new or existing surfaces on an approved substrate, for a tile look without grout lines to maintain.
  • Conventional tile: individual pieces set on a rigid, absorbent substrate that mortar can bond to, with grout between every tile. Ella does offer tile plans for tubs that allow the tub to be tiled, as noted in the showers, shower screens and accessories overview, so a tiled design is a supported route when the tile stays on the walls.

The table makes the practical difference plain. Every Ella panel row goes up as a few large pieces over a wall you already have, with silicone at the seams, and the panel sizes tell you at a glance whether a stock piece covers your wall. The tile row has no fixed sizes because it is assembled on site, which is its appeal for a custom design, but it starts with substrate preparation and ends with a grout joint at every tile. If your priority is a wall that stays dry with the least maintenance, choose a panel. If your priority is a specific pattern or color that no finish on the panel lines matches, tile on the walls is the route, with the base left as the finished acrylic surface it was made to be.

Getting the Panels into the Bathroom and Cutting Them to Fit

Because each Ella panel comes out of a mold, its size is fixed at the factory, and the way to fit a wall is to order the size equal to or slightly larger than the wall and trim the excess. Measure each wall at the top, middle and bottom, use the largest figure, and note any windows, valves or niches the panel must be cut around, then confirm the selection with your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850. Cultured marble cuts with a masonry blade in a standard circular saw, and a cut edge is finished with a bead of caulk or covered with a 2 inch trim piece; Ella carries a 1 inch corner trim in 96 inch lengths and a 2 inch by 3/4 inch flat trim for the gap at the tub. The cultured marble surrounds can be carried and installed by one person, which matters when the route to the bathroom includes tight turns. Bring the cartons into the bathroom and leave them for 24 hours before cutting so the material settles to the room's temperature and humidity. Tile has no delivery-size question at all, which is the one logistical point in its favor, but it trades that for the substrate preparation and grouting that panels never need.

Where Tile Still Belongs in an Ella Bathroom

Tile goes on the walls, never on the base. The Ella acrylic shower base is a finished walking surface with its slope, threshold and drain molded in, and acrylic does not accept thinset, so tile laid on it would not bond reliably and could trap water underneath with no path to the drain. Can You Tile Over an Ella Acrylic Shower Base? covers the reasons, and the same principle applies when you tile the walls: the wall finish comes down over the edge of the base so water runs onto the pan rather than behind it. The second video on this page shows the glue-up tile flange kit, a flexible waterproof strip that chemically bonds to 100 percent silicone sealant along a marked line on the wall, so a tiled wall stays sealed where it meets the tub or shower floor through general expansion, contraction and routine floor settling. If you are pairing tiled walls with an Ella base, confirm the wall detail with your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 and with your tile installer before work begins. Common Questions

Is acrylic or tile easier to keep watertight in a shower?
Acrylic and cultured marble panels are easier to keep watertight. Each panel arrives with its surface already sealed, so the only joints are the panel seams and the edge at the tub or base, and each gets silicone. Tile has a grout joint between every piece plus the joint at the base, which means many more places for water to get in.
Can I tile over my Ella acrylic shower base instead of using panels?
No. The acrylic base is a finished surface that does not accept thinset, and tiling it would bury the molded slope and threshold that move water to the drain. Plan any tiled look for the walls above the base, and bring the wall finish down over the base edge so water runs onto the pan.
Do Ella wall panels go over existing tile or drywall?
Yes. The cultured marble panels glue over drywall, plaster, painted walls, Durock or even existing tile, and the PVC tongue and groove tiles go over new or existing surfaces on an approved substrate. The wall behind any glued panel has to be sound, clean and dry, so describe your wall to the team at (800) 480-6850 if you are unsure it qualifies.
How do I cut cultured marble shower panels to fit my wall?
Order the panel size equal to or slightly larger than the wall and trim the excess. Cultured marble cuts with a masonry blade in a standard circular saw, and the cut edge is finished with a bead of caulk or covered with a 2 inch trim piece. Let the cartons sit in the bathroom for 24 hours before cutting.
What finishes do the acrylic three-piece wall systems come in?
The three-piece acrylic wall systems come in white, CNC and digital print finishes, with ADA accessories available. The acrylic 3-panel kit has a glossy sanitary acrylic surface that is warm to the touch. Ask your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 which finishes are currently available for your size.
