What Ella's PVC Wall Tiles Are

The Ella PVC product is a groutless wall tile, not a loose sheet of board. The installation video presents Ella brand PVC groutless shower tiles, shown in a Carrara look, as a simple and stylish way to upgrade a shower or bath enclosure. Each tile has a tongue and groove edge, so the pieces fit together snugly and securely, and no grout goes between them. The tiles can be placed over new or existing surfaces, which makes them a remodel-friendly choice when you want a fresh wall without tearing out what is there.

In the Ella line these sit alongside the panel systems as grout-free interlocking tiles, one of six wall systems the company lists. The installation guide covers the tongue and groove wall tiles together with the Palisade vinyl tiles, and the same rules apply to both. How the PVC Tiles Go Up

1. Bring the tiles into the home and let them acclimate for 24 hours before installation.
2. Confirm the wall is an approved substrate as listed in the installation guide.
3. Measure carefully, score the tile, then snap it to get the precise piece you need.
4. Apply adhesive to the back of the tile.
5. Place a thin bead of silicone at each joint to ensure a watertight seal.
6. Set the tile and snap it into place against its neighbor with the tongue and groove connection.
7. Hold back 10 percent spare tile so cuts and any later repair can be covered from the same material.

The score and snap cut is part of the appeal. The pieces are shaped on site with simple measuring and scoring, and the video shows a finished enclosure coming together quickly with a clean, modern look.

What Keeps a PVC Tile Wall Watertight

Two things do the waterproofing work, the silicone and the overlap at the bottom of the wall. With no grout lines, the seal between pieces is the silicone, which is why the guide calls for silicone in every seam in a wet area and the video shows a thin bead at each joint. Skipping seams is the one shortcut to avoid on a shower wall.

The second point is where the wall meets the fixture below it. Ella walk-in tubs have a flat deck edge with no built-in tile flange, so a flange is added at installation. A thin tile flange is glued to the tub edge with 100% silicone before the tub is pushed into place. The tile or wall panel then runs down over the flange and onto the deck, and every joint is finished with silicone caulk. PVC Tiles Compared with Other Ella Wall Systems

PVC tiles and the panel kits reach the same goal by different routes. Tiles arrive as small pieces that you cut and snap into place one at a time, so every joint becomes a silicone seam you are responsible for sealing. The SMC kit uses overlapping flanges to do away with grout lines, and the acrylic 3-panel kit covers a whole alcove with one back panel and two side panels that roll up for shipping. The cultured marble panels, shown in the second video, have factory finished edges for seamless joining and can still be trimmed for a custom fit. If getting large panels into the bathroom is a concern, tiles are a natural answer. If you want the fewest joints to seal, a panel kit is the simpler path. Plan Grab Bars and the Base Before the Wall Is Covered

A glued-on tile is a wall finish, so settle where any grab bar will be anchored with your installer before the tiles cover the wall. Ella acrylic shower walls are built with reinforced zones behind the acrylic where grab bars are meant to be fastened, and a grab bar should never be screwed into an unreinforced area.
