Why Does the Digital Display Stay Lit and Can I Turn It Off?

The digital display on your Ella walk-in tub stays lit whenever the tub has power, and there is no button on the control pad that turns the backlight off. This is normal and it is not a sign of a fault. If the glow bothers you, a licensed electrician can add a switch on the tub circuit so you can cut power to the tub when it is not in use.

Why the Display Is Always on

The digital control pad is powered whenever the circuit feeding the tub is live, so the display remains illuminated and is ready the moment you press a button. Turning the therapies off ends the pumps and heater, but the pad itself keeps its power. A dark display is the opposite situation and usually means the tub has lost power, which is covered in why the digital control pad is not lighting up.

Turning the Light Off by Cutting Power

Ella does not send technicians, so this is a job for a local licensed electrician. The electrician adds a switch on the circuit that feeds the tub, and you simply switch it off when the tub will not be used. Here is the routine once the switch is in place.

  1. Finish your bath and turn off the hydro and air therapies at the control pad as usual.
  2. If your tub has an air system, leave the power on for a while. The Auto Purge cycle starts automatically about 20 minutes after the air pump is turned off and runs for 120 seconds to blow residual water out of the air lines. It needs power to run, and it cannot be stopped once it starts.
  3. Once the purge has finished, switch the circuit off and the display will go dark.
  4. Switch the circuit back on before your next bath. The display lights up as soon as the tub has power again.

What Not to Do

Do not try to unplug or disconnect wiring under the tub yourself, and do not remove the control pad to darken it. A switch on the circuit installed by an electrician is the clean solution. If the pad is lit but does not respond to presses, that is a different issue, covered in touchpad and push button controls not responding.

Common Questions

Is the always-lit display a sign something is wrong?
No. The digital display stays lit whenever the tub has power, and that is how it is designed to work. It does not mean a pump or heater is running.
Is there a button that turns the display light off?
No. The control pad has no backlight off setting. The only way to darken the display is to remove power from the tub, which is why some owners have an electrician add a switch on the circuit.
Will cutting power to the tub cause any harm?
Switching the circuit off between baths is fine as long as the air system Auto Purge has already finished, about 20 minutes after the air pump is turned off. When power returns, the display lights up and the tub is ready to use.
Is the lit display the same as the chromatherapy light?
No. The chromatherapy light is a separate LED inside the tub with its own control. If that light will not come on, see why the chromatherapy light will not turn on.
Do I need to remove the seat cushions before using the heated seat?
No. The optional seat cushions do not affect the heated seat and back, so you can warm the seat before getting in with the cushions in place. Note that the heated seat and back is an ordered option, so check your order if you are not sure your tub has it.
