Why Are My Foot Jets Weak and What Does a Dry Run Do?

Mis à jour Novembre 2026

When the foot jets feel weak with the foot intensity dial already fully open, the cause is almost always in the foot circuit itself: a center nozzle turned partly closed, water that does not cover the calf jets, the dial's air hose off at the foot pump, a clogged inlet cover or scale in the lines. Work through those before suspecting the pump. Running a hydro pump dry, meaning without enough water covering the jets, causes permanent damage to the pump that is not covered by warranty, and the general checks in Why Are My Walk-In Tub Jets So Weak? apply to the foot system too, with the differences explained below.

The Foot Massage Is Its Own Circuit

On an Ella tub with independent foot massage, the foot and calf jets are not fed by the seat pump. They have their own pump, their own push button and their own intensity dial. On the Ultimate, for example, the deck runs from front to back through the LED light button, the three-speed air massage button, the hydro massage button for the back and hips, the hydro intensity dial for the seat and hips, the independent foot massage button and finally the intensity dial for the foot massage. The first video on this page explains the two-pump design: one pump for the seat jets and one for the foot jets, so you can run full power to just your feet or to your entire body, with an intensity dial for each side. The second video walks through the Ultimate's controls and shows the fill level for a foot-only massage.

That design has two consequences for troubleshooting. First, a weak foot massage alongside a strong seat massage tells you the seat pump is fine and the problem is somewhere on the foot side. Second, the foot dial, like the seat dial, is an air control on a small hose rather than an electrical control. Turning it up introduces more air into the jet stream for a stronger flow, and turning it down reduces the air for a gentler one. It does not change pump speed, so a dial that is fully open and still makes no difference points to the hose or the water level, not to the pump.

What to Check When the Dial Is Already Open

  1. Confirm the water level. For a full-body soak the water must be 2 inches above the highest jets before the hydro pump runs. If you are using only the foot massage, fill the foot well to just below the seat and just above the hydro calf jets, as the Ultimate video shows, then press the foot button gently. A pump pulling from a half-covered inlet runs weak and risks running dry.
  2. Check each foot jet's center nozzle. The nozzle is a valve, and turning it opens, reduces or closes the jet. A jet someone turned down months ago feels weak no matter where the dial sits. If a nozzle is too stiff to turn, loosen the butterfly handles behind it with a pair of channel-type pliers seated on a handle and given a turn, as shown in Adjusting Jet Pressure, Foot Jet Nozzles, and a Stiff Intensity Control Dial.
  3. Check the alignment of the jet. A foot jet can be removed from inside the tub. The jet is half cut, and the open side of that half-cut opening must line up with the hole inside the jet body where the water comes out. A jet whose opening sits away from the hole is partly closed even when the nozzle feels fully open. Line it up, then tighten the nut so the nozzle does not turn on its own. Can I Remove the Jet Nozzles on My Walk-In Tub to Clean Them? covers which jets come apart and which stay in place.
  4. Check the dial hose. If the foot pump runs but turning the foot dial changes nothing, remove the access panel and reseat the small air hose from the dial firmly at the pump.
  5. Clear the pump inlet cover inside the tub. Hair, debris or a small object drawn against the intake starves the pump. Wipe the cover with a non-abrasive towel.
  6. Run the vinegar flush. Combine 2 cups of white vinegar with 2 cups of water, fill the tub to 1 inch above the highest jets, add the mixture, run the tub for 10 minutes, then drain. Repeat it if the jets release flakes or slime.

Fill, nozzle, alignment, hose, inlet, flush. If the foot jets come back to full strength after any one of those, there is nothing else to do, and the monthly flush will keep them there.

What Running the Pump Dry Does

Hydro pumps are designed to run with the jets submerged. Running one dry causes permanent damage to the pump, and that damage is not covered by the product warranty. The published guidance for Ella tubs stops there. There is no published statement on what a dry run does to the circuit protector or to the in-line heater, so this page will not guess at it. What is documented is that the in-line heater and the ozone generator run automatically with the hydro pump, so if the foot pump ran with little or no water in the foot well, note how long it ran and whether any water covered the inlet, stop using the foot system, and let the team confirm what should be inspected on that circuit. What Are Jets de massage hydro on a Walk-In Tub? explains the water level rule and the parts that run with the pump.

Opening a Parts Request

If the pressure stays weak at every foot jet with the dial up, the inlet clear, the flush done and the water level right, if the pump surges to full strength and then drops off, or if you know the pump ran dry, open a ticket. Ella does not send technicians. Parts ship under the parts warranty once the problem is verified, and a local licensed plumber or electrician does the labor. The warranty process asks for photos and a description before a part is verified, so have these ready:

  • Your model and serial number from the label inside the access panel.
  • Your therapy package name, since the foot jet count and the pump layout belong to the package rather than the model name.
  • Which jets are affected, the position of both intensity dials and the water level you used.
  • A photo of the pump inlet cover and photos of any part you suspect.
  • A short video with sound of the foot jets running, which lets the team hear the pump.
  • If the pump ran dry, how long it ran and whether the foot well had any water in it.

Open the ticket at ellasbubbles.com/support, or call your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 with that information ready. The team confirms the cause and, where a part is needed, sends the matching part for your build.

Questions fréquentes

Does the foot massage have its own intensity dial?
Yes, on tubs with independent foot massage. Those tubs have a second pump for the foot and calf jets and a second dial for it on the deck. When the foot jets feel weak, check the foot dial rather than the seat dial, and confirm both are turned up.
How full does the tub need to be for just the foot jets?
For a foot-only massage, fill the foot well to just below the seat and just above the hydro calf jets, then press the foot button. For a full-body soak, the water must be 2 inches above the highest jets before the hydro pump runs.
Is a pump that ran dry covered under the warranty?
The published guidance states that running a pump dry causes permanent damage that is not covered by warranty. The team reviews each case from your photos, description and serial number, so send those through ellasbubbles.com/support rather than assuming either way.
Does turning the dial up make the pump work harder?
No. The intensity dial is an air control on a small hose, not an electrical control. Turning it up adds air to the jet stream for a stronger feel and turning it down removes air, but the pump runs at the same speed either way.
Can I take a foot jet out myself to check it?
Yes. A foot jet comes out from inside the tub, and the open side of its half-cut opening must line up with the hole inside the jet body when it goes back in. Tighten the nut so the nozzle stays put. Air jets stay in place because removing one lets air escape.
What happens to the heater or circuit protector after a dry run?
Ella does not publish guidance on that, so this page does not guess. The documented effect of a dry run is permanent damage to the pump. Tell the team how long the pump ran and whether water covered the inlet, and they will confirm what to inspect on that circuit.

About this guide. Answers in the Ella’s Bubbles Support Center are compiled from real conversations with tub owners, our technicians’ notes and the product documentation, then reviewed by our team. Tub models and options have evolved over the years, so a detail here may differ slightly from your exact tub. If something looks different on yours, send us your serial number and a specialist will confirm it for your model.
