Which Ella walk-in tub models fit a 44 to 48 inch space?

Updated October 2026

Two Ella walk-in tubs fit a space that measures 48 inches wall to wall: the Ella Flow, which is 28 inches wide by 48 inches long, and the Mobile, which is 26 inches wide by 45 inches long. For a 44 inch opening the only standard footprint short enough is the Front Entry at 32 inches wide by 40 inches long, because every other model Ella builds is 52 inches or longer and a tub shell cannot be shortened. The complete list of footprints is in What are the standard dimensions of a walk-in tub?, and this page sorts the line by what fits a short opening, what passes a narrow doorway, and what your installer does with the inches left over.

What Fits and What Does Not, by Actual Size

Ella builds around a set of standard footprints rather than custom shells, and the size in a model's name is a rounded nominal figure. A tub sold as 28 inches wide can measure 27.5 inches on the drawing, so the table uses the actual exterior sizes from the current spec sheets. The width and length are the outside of the acrylic shell, which is the number to hold against the opening and against every doorway on the way in, as Are Walk-In Tub Dimensions the Floor Footprint or the Inside Bathing Space? explains. Heights are included because a short opening is often a cramped room as well.

ModelActual exterior size (W x L x H)DoorWhat it means for a 44 to 48 inch space
Front Entry32 x 40 x 40 inchesOutward-swing U-shape, enters from the frontThe only footprint short enough for a 44 inch opening; in a 48 inch opening the installer frames and finishes the remaining space
Mobile26 x 45 inches, 39 1/4 inches highOutward-swing U-shape, 165 degree swingRoughly an inch too long for 44 inches; drops into a 48 inch opening with a small gap at one end
Flow28 x 48 x 36.5 inchesInward-swing acrylic S-shapeFills a 48 inch opening wall to wall; too long for 44 inches
Petite27.5 x 52 x 35 inchesInward-swing stainless steelToo long for either opening unless the wall is opened up
Elite30 x 52 x 35 inchesInward-swing stainless steelToo long for either opening unless the wall is opened up
Deluxe29.5 x 55 x 39 inchesInward-swing stainless steelToo long for either opening unless the wall is opened up
Ultimate30 x 60 inches nominal, 59.5 inches actual length, 35 3/4 inches highInward-swing stainless steelSized to fill a standard 60 inch alcove on its own, not a short opening

Here is what the differences mean. Only three models come in under 52 inches long. The Front Entry is the only one short enough for 44 inches, and it is also the widest of the three at 32 inches, so check the depth of the opening front to back as carefully as its length. The Mobile is the narrowest tub Ella makes, and in a 48 inch opening it leaves a small gap at one end that your installer closes with framing and finish, because the Mobile has no extension panel. The Flow fills 48 inches exactly, which means the finished opening must truly measure 48 inches between the tiled walls, not just at the framing. Everything from the Petite up is 52 inches or longer, and because a tub shell cannot be shortened, a 52 inch tub in a 48 inch space means your contractor enlarging the opening.

Which Models Pass a Narrow Doorway

A short opening often comes with a narrow door, and the tub has to reach the bathroom before it can fit inside it. Ella tubs ship fully assembled and cannot be taken apart, although the access panels come off and an inward-swing door lifts off its hinges. None of Ella's walk-in tubs will pass through a finished 24 inch opening as it stands, because the narrowest models, the Transfer26 and the Mobile, are 26 inches wide, and across the line exterior widths run from 26 to 32 inches. Every tub needs an opening a little wider than its own actual width.

  • Mobile: 26 inches wide, and listed as suiting a 25 inch doorway only with the door frame itself removed. Taking off the casing alone usually gains only about half an inch.
  • Petite: 27 1/2 inches wide actual, with a shipping crate 31 inches wide, so plan the route for the crate if the tub travels packed.
  • Flow: 28 inches wide, and it fits through a 28 inch doorway.
  • Deluxe: 29 1/2 inches wide, which passes a standard 30 inch doorway.
  • Elite: 30 inches wide actual, with a crate 32 inches wide.
  • Front Entry and Monaco: 32 inches wide, so the Monaco in particular needs a wider passage.

Measure the finished opening at its tightest point and check every exterior door, interior door and hallway along the route, not just the bathroom door. If any clearance is tight, share the narrowest figure and the model you like with your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 before the tub is built.

What to Do with the Inches Left over

A tub shell cannot be shortened, and extension panels only fill a gap at the end wall rather than making a tub smaller, so leftover inches are always closed at the end of the tub, never taken out of it. The Front Entry and the Mobile have no extension panel, so the installer frames and finishes any remaining space, which is why the Mobile's small gap in a 48 inch opening is a carpentry detail rather than a fit problem. The Flow can come with an extension panel, which is how it also fits neatly into a 60 inch tub alcove, and it has an end panel on the faucet side. What Is an Alcove Installation for a Walk-In Tub? explains the three-wall opening and which models ship with a panel.

The Ella Standard installation video shows the same idea on a larger scale. The Standard is a 30 by 52 tub that fits a 60 inch alcove with an end panel on the faucet side and a 7 inch extension panel on the other side, and the video shows trimming the corner piece off the main apron for a tighter fit when the panel is used. Ella's extension panels can be cut down to size, so a standard footprint can be fitted into an opening slightly larger than the tub without a custom unit, as Walk-In Tub and Shower Base Sizes and How to Measure for Fit describes.

If the Room Is Low as Well as Short

Only the LayDown models come in under 35 inches in outside height. The LayDown60 is 21 inches high at the deck edge with the backrest end rising to 25 3/4 inches, and the LayDown72 sits just over 21 inches at the deck edge with the backrest end at 27 7/8 inches, but both are 60 or 72 inches long and recline you rather than seat you. Every seated Ella walk-in tub stands 35 inches or taller: the Elite, Petite and Royal at 35 inches, the Ultimate at 35 3/4 inches, the Flow at 36 1/2 inches, the Deluxe at 39 inches, the Mobile at 39 1/4 inches and the Front Entry at 40 inches. A seated tub cannot be built shorter than 35 inches, and the leveling legs cannot be turned down to lower a tub, since their job is to keep every foot evenly planted so the door aligns and seals.

How to Measure Before You Call

Measure the opening wall to wall at the back and again at the front, because the finished opening between tiled walls is smaller than the framing. Then measure the depth of the space front to back, the height available, and the width of every doorway the tub must pass through. Compare those figures with the actual size on the spec sheet rather than the nominal size in the model name. How Do I Evaluate a Walk-In Tub's Footprint for a Small Bathroom? turns these checks into a step-by-step evaluation, including the floor the door needs in order to open. With the opening, the depth, the doorway and the model in hand, your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 can confirm the width and the door swing against the current spec sheet.

Common Questions

Will any Ella walk-in tub fit through a 24 inch doorway?
No. The narrowest Ella tubs, the Transfer26 and the Mobile, are 26 inches wide, and every tub needs an opening a little wider than its actual width. A 24 inch door would need to be widened, or the casing and framing taken off, before a tub could be carried in. Measure every doorway and hallway on the route and share the narrowest figure with the team.
Is the Mobile short enough for a 44 inch long opening?
Not quite. The Mobile is 45 inches long, so it is roughly an inch too long for a 44 inch opening. The Front Entry, at 32 inches wide by 40 inches long, is the only standard footprint short enough for that space.
Can a 52 inch walk-in tub be cut down to fit 48 inches?
No. A tub shell cannot be shortened, and extension panels only fill a gap at the end wall rather than making a tub smaller. In a 48 inch space the Flow fits wall to wall and the Mobile fits with a small gap, while a 52 inch model would mean your contractor enlarging the opening.
Which Ella walk-in tubs are under 35 inches tall outside?
Only the LayDown60 and LayDown72, which are 21 inches high at the deck edge and recline you rather than seat you. Every seated Ella tub stands 35 inches or taller, and a seated tub cannot be built shorter than that.
Which Ella walk-in tub fits a standard 5 by 7 bathroom?
In a room that size the tub normally goes where the old bathtub sat, and most bathrooms were framed around a standard 60 inch tub in a three-wall alcove. Every Ella walk-in tub fits that opening: models 60 inches or longer fill it on their own, and the 52 inch models close the gap at one end with an extension panel that can be cut down. Measure the finished opening first, because it is smaller than the framing.
What should I measure before I ask about fit?
Measure the opening wall to wall at the back and at the front, the depth front to back, the height available, and the width of every doorway on the path in. Compare those with the actual size on the spec sheet, then share them with your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 along with the model you like.
