The National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) treats a jetted walk-in tub as a "hydromassage bathtub," and the rules for it live in Part VII of Article 680. Three requirements matter most: an individual branch circuit for the tub, a readily accessible GFCI protecting it, and equipment that stays accessible without damaging the house. Ella's published requirements say the same thing in installer language: dedicated 20A/120V GFCI-protected lines installed and tested by a licensed electrician, a grounded frame, and outlets the labeled cords can reach inside the equipment compartment. Your local inspector has the final word on which edition of the code applies.
What the NEC Calls a Hydromassage Bathtub and Where Part VII Sits
Article 680 covers pools, spas, hot tubs and fountains, and most of it deals with water that stays in place. A hydromassage bathtub is different: the NEC defines it as a permanently installed bathtub with a recirculating piping system, pump and associated equipment, designed to accept, circulate and discharge water on each use. That describes every Ella tub with a hydro pump. Because the tub empties after every bath, the code gives it its own short section, Part VII (680.70 through 680.74).
A soaking-only Ella tub with no pumps does not match that definition. If the optional heated seat and backrest is its only electrical item, Ella specifies a 15A/120V line, and your electrician and inspector apply the general bathroom wiring rules instead.

"Individual branch circuit" is the code's term for a dedicated circuit: one breaker, one cable, one load. "Readily accessible" means the GFCI can be reached quickly without tools, ladders or moving obstacles. Ella's published requirement is GFCI protection on that dedicated circuit, and either a GFCI receptacle or a GFCI breaker satisfies it; your electrician chooses the location that meets the code wording and the local inspector. Bonding and Grounding the Frame
Grounding gives fault current a path back to the panel so the breaker or GFCI trips. Bonding ties the metal parts together so they sit at the same electrical potential. Section 680.74 asks for a solid copper bonding conductor joining the metal fittings and equipment parts that touch the circulating water, terminated at the pump motor; your electrician sizes and routes it to the edition your area enforces.
Every Ella walk-in tub ships with ground wires on all electrical components and on the tub frame, and the installer secures a proper ground connection following local and state electrical codes. "Frame of the tub has been properly grounded" is one of the items your installer initials on the Warranty Activation Form, alongside "Tub is installed by a licensed electrician" and "Tub must be installed on a dedicated GFCI circuit breaker."
How Ella's Published Requirements Line Up with the Code
- ☐ Dedicated 20A/120V GFCI-protected line or lines, installed and tested by a licensed electrician: the code's individual branch circuit with GFCI protection.
- ☐ The Flow is the only Ella tub specified at 15A, and a soaking tub with only the heated seat and backrest also uses a 15A/120V line. Everything with pumps uses 20A.
- ☐ Ella labels the power cords at the factory ("Line 1 20 Amp," "Line 2 20 Amp"), so each cord goes to its own circuit.
- ☐ Outlets sit inside or directly behind the equipment compartment where the factory cords reach without an extension. See outlet placement and cord reach.
- ☐ The tub is installed with access to both plumbing and electrical connections, which is what 680.73 asks for.
- ☐ No electrical appliances within 3 feet of the tub (hair dryers, lamps, phones, radios, TVs).
- ☐ If the GFCI fails its test or will not reset, turn the power off and do not use the tub until an electrician corrects it.

Which NEC Edition Applies: Your State and Local Inspector Decide
NFPA publishes a new NEC edition every three years, but states and cities adopt editions on their own schedule and often add amendments, so neighboring towns can enforce different editions at the same time. The three rules above apply almost everywhere, but details such as the bonding method, where the GFCI must sit and how the service opening is judged come from the edition your jurisdiction uses. The authority having jurisdiction, usually your local electrical inspector, makes that call, and your licensed electrician knows the local practice.
