What Is a GFCI for a Walk-In Tub?

A GFCI, short for ground fault circuit interrupter, is the ground-fault protection that every jetted Ella walk-in tub requires on its own dedicated 20A/120V circuit. Whether it lives in the outlet as a GFCI receptacle or in the panel as a GFCI breaker, its job is the same: watch the current flowing out to the tub and back, and cut power the moment any of it leaks to ground. With water, a bather and electric pumps in one place, this protection is a safety requirement.

How It Works

Under normal operation the current leaving on the hot conductor equals the current returning on the neutral. If some of that current finds another path, such as through water or through a person, the GFCI senses the imbalance and opens the circuit almost instantly. Which Ella Models Have It

Every Ella tub with pumps needs its own dedicated GFCI-protected 20A/120V circuit or circuits, installed by a licensed electrician, and the count follows the therapy package rather than the model name. What to Know as an Owner

Test the GFCI periodically as part of your routine safety checks: press Test, confirm the tub loses power, then press Reset. A dedicated GFCI breaker is one of the items your installer initials on the warranty activation checklist, so keep that paperwork with your tub documents. If the GFCI trips once and resets normally, watch it. If it trips repeatedly or will not reset at all, that signals ground current or a device fault: switch the power off and do not use the tub until an electrician has corrected the cause.
