Can I order the Ella LayDown walk-in tub with a left-hand door?

Yes, in the way that matters for your bathroom: both Ella LayDown tubs, the 30x60 and the 32x72, can be ordered as a left-hand or a right-hand unit, but on a LayDown the hand refers to the drain side, because the tempered glass door is always centered on the long side of the tub rather than at one end. As What Is Door Side (Left-Hand vs Right-Hand) on a Walk-In Tub? explains, every current Ella model except the Front Entry comes in a left-hand and a right-hand version, and on a LayDown what you are choosing is whether the drain sits at the left end or the right end as you face the tub. Pick the side that matches your house drain, and the door, the step-in and the shower screen all follow from that choice.

Why the LayDown Door Sits in the Middle of the Tub

On a seated Ella walk-in tub the door sits over the seat at one end and the drains sit at the other end, which is why a right-side door means left-side drains. The LayDown tubs have no seat. You recline at full length, so the door is placed in the center of the long side, where the deck on both sides of it stays clear. Ella's video on the 32x72 describes this as a uniquely positioned center door that provides extra deck space, which is what makes the folding glass screen an easy add on. The 30x60 spec sheet lists a tempered glass inward swing door with a brushed-finish aluminum frame, and its drawing shows a glass door opening 19 5/8 inches wide with a 115 degree swing arc. The 32x72 video shows a tempered glass door set in a stainless steel door frame. Because the door swings inward, no floor space in front of the tub is needed for it to open, so a toilet or vanity close to the tub is not the problem it can be with an outward-swing door.

The two videos on this page show both doors. The first walks around the 30x60 with its chrome locking handle, tempered glass door and low threshold, and the second shows the 32x72's center door and the deck space on either side of it.

What Left-Hand and Right-Hand Mean on a LayDown

Across the Ella line, the hand of a tub is set at the factory and cannot be reversed after delivery, and the usual way to choose it is to look at where your house drain is. Should My Walk-In Tub Door Be on the Left or Right Side? gives the rule for seated tubs: the door and the drains are on opposite sides, so a right-side door puts the drains on the left. On a LayDown the door is in the middle, so the only thing that changes between the two hands is the end the drain sits at. A left-hand LayDown has its drain at the left end as you face the tub, and a right-hand LayDown has its drain at the right end. Order the drain on the side where your plumbing already is, and the rest of the layout falls into place.

  • The 30x60 ships with a 2 inch brass drain with overflow. The 32x72 video shows a large, easy to turn drain opener on an oversized 2 inch drain.
  • The door-side article notes that the house drain does not have to dictate the side on an Ella tub, because there is roughly 3 inches of clearance beneath the frame, enough for a 2 inch PVC line. Your licensed installer should confirm that connection plan before the order is placed.
  • Left and right versions share the same measurements mirrored, so the footprint of the tub does not change with the hand.
  • The hand is recorded on your order paperwork at the same time as the therapy package and faucet choice, and the tub is then built and tested for that order.

The Shower Screen Is Handed to Match the Drain

If you plan to shower in the tub, the bifold tempered glass screen made for the LayDown is stocked as a left-hand or a right-hand screen, and its hand must match the drain side of the tub. A left-hand screen goes with a left-drain LayDown and a right-hand screen with a right-drain LayDown, so the folded stack sits at the wall end on the drain side. Folding Glass Shower Screen: Which Side It Mounts On, How Much Room It Takes Folded, and Confirming Stock explains that the folded panels lean outward, away from the bathing area, and stand roughly 4 to 6 inches out from the wall, so they are never behind your head while you bathe. Because each hand is stocked separately, confirm availability for your drain side before you finalize the order. The 30x60 drawing with the screen installed shows a screen span of 38 1/4 inches along the tub and panel heights of 57 and 57 1/2 inches, which helps when you are checking a window or a wall-mounted faucet at that end. Seated tubs take a different, four-fold screen, and Which glass shower screen fits a seated versus a lay-down walk-in tub? puts the two side by side.

What the differences mean for you: the hand question is answered the same way on both LayDown tubs, by the drain, and neither tub ever puts the door at an end. Where they differ is faucet planning. On the 30x60 the drain end is also where your existing or new wall-mounted faucet has to be, so your plumber should confirm the faucet position fits on that side before you order. On the 32x72 the optional deck-mount faucet is drilled for your order, so the drain side you choose also sets where the faucet deck lands. The 32x72 video notes that the tub is long enough for someone six feet tall to lie fully immersed and that it is 15 inches deep, while the 30x60's interior floor is 46 inches long by 20 inches wide, so bather size can decide the model before the hand does.

Before You Place the Order

  1. Stand where you will approach the tub and note which end the house drain is at.
  2. Order the LayDown with the drain on that side, left or right, and have your installer confirm the drain connection plan.
  3. If you want the bifold screen, ask your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 to confirm stock for that hand before the order is finalized.
  4. For a 30x60, confirm the wall-mounted faucet you are supplying will reach the drain end. For a 32x72, decide whether you want the optional deck-mount faucet.
  5. Measure the path into the bathroom. The 30x60 ships in a crate measuring 63 by 33 by 29 inches with a shipping weight of 220 pounds.

One thing you cannot change is the door itself. Every Ella tub, including both LayDown models, is built with a door, as Can I Order an Ella Walk-In Tub Without a Door? explains, and the LayDown door is always the centered glass side door. If you have your model name, drain side and bathroom measurements ready, your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 can confirm the right setup for your room.

Common Questions

Does the LayDown door swing inward or outward?
The LayDown door swings inward. The 30x60 spec sheet lists a tempered glass inward swing door with a brushed-finish aluminum frame, and its drawing shows a 115 degree swing arc. Because it opens into the tub, no clear floor space in front of the tub is needed for the door.
Can the LayDown drain side be changed after delivery?
No. The hand of an Ella tub is set at the factory when the tub is built for your order and cannot be reversed afterward. Confirm the drain side with your installer before the order is placed.
Which shower screen goes with a left-drain LayDown?
A left-hand bifold screen. The LayDown screens are stocked separately by hand so the folded stack sits at the wall end on the drain side, and a right-drain tub takes the right-hand screen. Confirm stock for your hand before you finalize the order.
Does the LayDown 30x60 come with a faucet on the drain side?
No. The LayDown 30x60 has no factory faucet option and requires a pre-existing or new customer-supplied faucet, typically wall mounted. The LayDown 32x72 is faucet ready and can be ordered with an optional Ella deck-mount fast-fill faucet.
Is the LayDown footprint different for left and right versions?
No. Left-hand and right-hand Ella tubs share the same measurements mirrored, so the 30x60's actual size of 60 inches long by 30 inches wide by 21 inches high is the same for either drain side. Only the end the drain sits at changes.
