A properly installed and level Ella walk-in tub door does not leak. Every Ella door, inward-swing or outward-swing, closes against a soft silicone gasket that compresses against the frame into a watertight seal when the door is latched, and your installer confirms that seal with a 20 minute fill as part of the warranty activation checklist. When water does show up at the door, the cause is almost always leveling or debris rather than a failed gasket, as explained in What Is the Door Seal on a Walk-In Tub?.
How the Door Is Sealed
The door seal, also called the door gasket, is the silicone strip around the door opening. On a level tub the latch draws the door evenly into the frame and the silicone compresses the same amount all the way around. Inward-swing doors get extra help from the water itself: as the tub fills, the water presses the door into the seal, which is why an inward-swing door will not open until the tub has drained. Outward-swing doors rely on a gear and shaft locking mechanism that pulls the door onto its seal. The U-shaped door uses a three-shaft gear and lock system and the extra wide L-shaped transfer door uses a two-shaft system, both shown in the first video below. Each door uses its own seal size, so a replacement is matched to your model and serial number.
Why a Door Starts to Leak
- Leveling. This is the number one cause. A leg that has lost contact with the floor lets the frame warp, and the door no longer meets the seal evenly.
- Grit, hair or debris in the seal channel, one of the most common reasons a door begins to drip.
- Residue on the gasket from soap film, body oils or bath products.
- A seal kept compressed because the door is left latched between baths.
- A new seal flattened in shipping, which is normal and correctable.
- Weight on the door. Never lean on it or use it as a handhold, because the warranty on the door and seal depends on the alignment set at installation staying unchanged.
Work through those in order. Confirm every leveling leg touches the floor, wipe the seal and frame with a common household cleaner on a soft cloth, run a fingertip along the channel to clear grit, then wipe the gasket with rubbing alcohol and gently squeeze and reshape any flattened section. Fill the tub and confirm it stays watertight. No grease, oil or spray lubricant is ever needed, as explained in My Door Seal Is Sticky. What Can I Clean or Lubricate It With?. Then leave the door open or unlocked whenever the tub is not in use so the gasket gets a rest.
Water That Is Not Coming from the Door
Water on the floor or behind the tub is often blamed on the door when it comes from somewhere else. A pull-out hand shower lifted to a wall mount without the barrel extension hose lets water drip through the deck insert hole to the space behind the tub, the classic sign described in What Is a Barrel Extension Hose (Leak Elimination Kit) on a Walk-In Tub?. A hand shower aimed toward the room, or jets switched on before the water covers them, sends spray onto the bathroom floor, which is covered in Why Does Water Spray Out of the Tub When I Use the Hand Shower?.
