Yes, you can have your measurements matched to a tub before you order. Send the width, length and height of the alcove where the tub will sit, the width of every doorway and hallway the tub must pass through, which side your existing drain is on, and your three seated body measurements, and your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 will compare them with the actual dimensions on each model's spec sheet and confirm the size, model and layout that fits. Walk-In Tub and Shower Base Sizes and How to Measure for Fit covers how to take the room measurements; this page covers what to send, what the team checks your numbers against and what happens after the fit is confirmed.
What to Include When You Send Measurements
A fit check goes fastest when everything arrives together. Include each of the following with your ticket or call.
- The alcove or space. The width, length and height of your existing tub or shower alcove, measured where the new tub will sit.
- The path in. The width of every doorway, and any hallway, the tub must travel through to reach the bathroom. A tub's actual exterior width decides whether it clears a doorway, and the actual figure can differ from the nominal size. The Petite, for example, is a nominal 28 inch tub whose actual exterior width is 27.5 inches.
- Your drain side. On an Ella walk-in tub the door and the drains are on opposite sides as you face the tub: a right-side door tub drains on the left and a left-side door tub drains on the right. Telling the team where your existing drain is lets them confirm the door hand you need.
- Your body, seated. Sit in a chair facing a wall in a relaxed position and measure your hips while seated, your shoulder width while seated, and your length from head to feet while seated. The tub seat must be wider than your seated hip figure.
- Who will use the tub. If two people of different sizes will bathe, send both sets of body measurements, because a tub sized for a tall bather can be uncomfortable for a shorter one.
- The model you have in mind, if any, so the team can start by confirming or ruling it out.
What the Team Compares Your Numbers Against
Every Ella model has a spec sheet with its actual size, and that is what your measurements are matched to, not the nominal size in the model name. The table shows the actual sizes and seat widths published for the models most often compared.
| Model | Actual size | Seat width | What it means for your fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flow | 28 x 48 x 36 1/2 inches | 20 inches | The shortest seated tub, for smaller bathers and small bathrooms |
| Petite | 27.5 x 52 x 35 inches | 19 inches | The narrowest seat on the lower 35 inch platform; the actual width is under 28 inches |
| Elite | 30 x 52 x 35 inches | 22 inches | The lower seat height with a wider seat, in the common 30 x 52 footprint |
| Deluxe | 30 x 55 inches, 39 inches tall | 21 inches | A 46.5 inch interior length for extra legroom without a 60 inch footprint |
| Ultimate | 30 x 60 inches, 35 3/4 inches tall | 21 inches | The full-length tub for taller bathers; needs the full 60 inch alcove |
| Big4One | 33 1/8 x 66 inches | 24 inches | Bathers around six feet and taller; wider and longer than a standard alcove |
| ShaK | 36 x 72 inches | 28 inches | The tallest and widest single bather, up to 6 feet 10 inches |
The pattern in the table is that length and width decide whether the tub fits the room, while height and seat width decide whether it fits the bather. The most common walk-in tub size is 30 inches wide by 52 inches long, and that footprint fits many standard alcoves. Ella also offers tubs in 32x52, 38x52, 30x60, 30x55, 28x52, 27x60 and 26x45 inch sizes, the Monaco in 32 by 53 or 32 by 52 inches, a transfer-style tub in 60 by 30 inches, and laid-down soaking tubs commonly sized at 32 by 72 inches, so there is usually a close match for an existing opening. Seat widths across the line run from 19 inches on the Petite and Transfer26 to 29 inches on the TransferXXL, which is why the seated hip measurement narrows the field so quickly. Bigger is not automatically better: the extra-large tubs with very long seats are designed for taller bathers and can be uncomfortable for an average or shorter person.
Why the Seat Matters as Much as the Footprint
It is tempting to send only the room measurements, but height alone never picks the tub. Your seated hip width, shoulder width and head-to-feet length decide the fit inside the shell, and two tubs with the same exterior footprint can seat very different bathers. A bather around five feet tall is usually matched first to the lower 35 inch platform, the Petite, Elite and Royal, or to a compact model such as the Flow, while a bather around six feet or taller is matched to the long-seat Big4One and ShaK or the LayDown 32x72 for a full-length recline. What size walk-in tub fits a five foot or six foot person? lays out both ends of that range side by side, which is useful when one household has one of each.
When the Alcove Is Bigger Than the Tub
A gap between the tub and the surrounding wall does not force you into a custom unit. Ella offers extension panels that can be cut down to size to close that space cleanly, so a standard tub size can go into an alcove that is slightly larger than the tub itself. Include the exact alcove length in your measurements so the team can tell you whether a standard size with an extension panel will fill it. Shower bases work differently: custom bases can be ordered to specific dimensions, such as a 36 by 36 inch corner base, with the drain placed to your exact measurements, and because the online drain-placement tool can round measurements up to the nearest inch, the team confirms your exact drain location before the base is built.
What Comes Back, and What Happens Next
The team replies with the size, model and layout that fits your numbers, including the door hand that matches your drain side and whether an extension panel is needed. If you are ordering, the next thing you see is a confirmation invoice by email, which you review carefully and confirm before payment is processed; Ordering and Shipping Policy: What to Expect From Order to Delivery walks through each step from that invoice to tracking. Your measurements also get a second check in person. If you ask the team for help finding an installer, Ella sends the recommended installer your contact information, the tub specifications and the electrical diagrams for the model, and the installer visits your home to measure the installation space before giving you an estimate. Getting Installer Referrals and Leads for Your Walk-In Tub describes that referral. Because tub and door configurations vary by model, confirm the exact size and layout with your Ella dealer or the team before finalizing your order, so the tub, the room and the installer's plan all agree.
