Can My Regular Plumber Install an Ella Walk-In Tub Without Special Training?

Updated November 2026

Yes. A licensed plumber who already installs ordinary bathtubs can install an Ella walk-in tub, and Ella's Bubbles does not require any special training or certification first. Ella builds and ships the tub but never performs the installation, so the work always goes to a local licensed contractor of your choosing, and most of it is everyday plumbing. The one decision worth settling before the tub ships is the faucet, which is covered in Using Your Own Faucet: No-Faucet Orders, Pre-Drilled Decks, Wall-Mount Options, and Which Tubs Require a Customer-Supplied Faucet.

Why Ella Does Not Certify Installers

Ella's Bubbles manufactures and sells walk-in tubs and does not install them or charge for installation. The published guidance is to hire a licensed, experienced local plumber and electrician, and any licensed installer is acceptable. Certification by Ella is not required, and there is no installer course to pass before the job. If you do not already have a plumber, Ella can refer installers from its nationwide network, but using one of them is a convenience rather than a condition.

The training Ella does offer is aimed at a different audience. Businesses that join the Ella's Bubbles reseller program get training calls that explain how the tubs work and what to offer their clients. That is product and sales training for companies that resell the tubs, not a prerequisite for the plumber who connects one.

Part of the reason no special training is needed is how the tub arrives. Every Ella tub is assembled and tested to order before it ships, with the pumps, motors and drain assembly fitted at the factory. Your plumber is connecting a finished, tested unit to your home's drain and water supply, not assembling a kit.

What the Plumbing Work Involves

From a plumber's point of view an Ella walk-in tub is a bathtub with a few extra connections, and each step uses familiar skills.

  1. Setting the tub in place. Most Ella walk-in tubs fit the same three-wall alcove your current tub occupies, so the room layout and plumbing locations stay where they are. When the tub is shorter than the alcove, an extension panel fills the gap, and a knee wall can hide the plumbing or carry fixtures. The tub stands on its own rustproof stainless steel frame. Can Ella Cut a Walk-Through Opening or Add a Door to My Existing Bathtub? explains why Ella sells complete tubs rather than converting an existing one, and how the alcove layout carries over.
  2. Connecting the drain. The tub ships with its drain assembly already installed. Your plumber connects the 2 inch drain to the house drain line, which is the same connection any bathtub needs.
  3. Connecting the water supply. The faucet set is assembled on the deck at the factory but is deliberately not hooked up to the supply lines, so the tub can ship fully drained. Your installer connects the supply lines on site. The 2-piece and 5-piece Ella faucet sets include two 3/4 inch braided supply lines and the diverter, so the connection hardware is already in the crate. Because Ella tubs use deck-mounted faucet packages, your existing wall spout and handles are normally replaced rather than reused.
  4. Leaving the pumps and motors alone. On a hydro or air massage tub the pumps and motors are fully installed at the factory. There is nothing for the plumber to mount, align or wire inside the tub.

The exception to the faucet step is the LayDown60, which has no factory faucet option and always needs a customer-supplied faucet, typically wall-mounted. If you are ordering that model, tell your plumber in advance so the rough-in is planned before the tub arrives.

The One Job That Is Not Plumbing: The Electrical Connection

The part of the installation that is not optional is the electrical connection. The tub's electrical equipment must be connected to a GFCI-protected circuit that is provided, installed and tested by a licensed electrician. This is not a task to fold into the plumbing work unless your plumber also holds an electrical license.

In practice this usually means scheduling two trades rather than finding a specialist. Many plumbing contractors already work alongside an electrician on bathroom projects, and the sequence is the same as for any jetted tub: the electrician provides and tests the circuit, and the plumber sets and connects the tub. Plan the electrical work together with the plumbing so the circuit is ready when the tub goes in and the whole installation can be tested at once.

Checks Your Plumber Should Finish Before Signing Off

Three simple checks at installation prevent most of the calls support receives about a new tub. They are the same checks described in My Clearance Tub Was Sold With a Door Leak. Can It Be Fixed?, where a door that weeps on a sound tub is traced back to leveling or the seal rather than to the tub itself.

  • Level the tub with every leg touching the floor and no gap under any leg. A door that will not seal on an otherwise sound tub is usually a leveling problem, and it is far easier to correct before the room is finished around it.
  • Clean the door seal with rubbing alcohol and reshape it by hand if shipping flattened it.
  • Keep weight off the door while testing, since leaning on an open door changes how it meets the seal.
  • Fill the tub to the seat and watch the door for 20 minutes to confirm it is watertight before the job is signed off.

A plumber who runs these checks on installation day is doing exactly what support would ask for later, so the tub is proven before anyone bathes in it.

What It Means for Your Warranty and Where Help Comes from

The warranty does not depend on who installed the tub, as long as the installation is done properly. Ella's Lifetime Limited Warranty covers parts only and never covers labor, installation, or removal and replacement, so the labor itself is warranted by the installer who performed it, not by Ella. Improper or negligent installation and modifications by anyone other than Ella are excluded from coverage, and Ella is not bound by warranty promises made by contractors, so choose a plumber who will stand behind their own work. If you have a specific question about whether a particular approach would affect coverage, ask the team at (800) 480-6850 before the work is done rather than after.

Your plumber also has a role in putting the warranty in force. The two-page warranty activation form must be completed and signed by both the customer and the installer and returned to Ella, which can be done online at ellasbubbles.com/warranty-activation/. Have your plumber sign it on installation day so nothing is left open.

When something needs attention later, Ella does not send technicians. Replacement parts ship under the warranty and a local licensed plumber or electrician does the labor, so the plumber who installed your tub is a natural choice for any future service as well.

Finally, your plumber does not work alone. Ella provides free lifetime technical support by phone, email and video, with installation manuals available, and that support is open to your installer as well as to you. If a question comes up on site, your plumber can call (800) 480-6850 or open a ticket at ellasbubbles.com/support. Have the model and serial number handy, because the serial number is on the label behind the magnetic access panel next to the door and it lets support pull up the exact configuration of your tub.

Common Questions

Does Ella send its own installer or technician to put in the tub?
No. Ella's Bubbles manufactures and sells the tubs but never performs installations or repairs. You hire a licensed local plumber and electrician, and Ella supports them with manuals and free lifetime technical support by phone, email and video.
Does my plumber need to be certified by Ella for the warranty to apply?
No. Any licensed installer is fine and certification by Ella is not required. What matters is that the installation is done properly, since improper or negligent installation is excluded from coverage and labor is never covered. The installer also signs the warranty activation form along with you.
Can my plumber do the electrical hookup too?
Only if they are also a licensed electrician. The tub must be connected to a GFCI-protected circuit that is provided, installed and tested by a licensed electrician. Most installations involve a plumber and an electrician working together.
Does the faucet arrive already connected to the water lines?
No. The faucet is assembled on the deck at the factory but is not hooked up to the supply lines, so the tub ships fully drained. Your installer connects the two 3/4 inch braided supply lines included with the 2-piece and 5-piece sets on site.
Can my plumber reuse my existing wall-mounted faucet?
Normally not. Ella tubs use deck-mounted faucet packages, so the existing spout and handles are usually replaced. The LayDown60 is the exception, because it has no factory faucet option and requires a customer-supplied faucet, typically wall-mounted.
Can my plumber call Ella with a question during the installation?
Yes. Technical support is free for the life of the tub and is available to your installer by phone, email and video. Your plumber can call (800) 480-6850 or open a ticket at ellasbubbles.com/support with your model and serial number.
