Is acrylic a good material for shower walls compared to tile?

Yes, acrylic is a good shower wall material, especially where easy care and accessibility matter. Ella's acrylic walls are large molded panels with a smooth finished surface, reinforced behind so that grab bars and seats can be mounted anywhere on the wall. Tile is still possible on the walls above an Ella base, but it is site-built work that depends on your tile installer and on a correctly sealed joint where the tile meets the base. What Acrylic Walls Bring to the Shower

The panel you see and touch is acrylic, a smooth finished surface. On Ella's made-in-the-USA shower stalls, multi-piece kits and barrier-free roll-in bases, that surface is AcrylX, a long lasting applied acrylic finish laid over a fiberglass-reinforced shell with Armorcore reinforced walls behind it. The fiberglass gives the unit its shape and strength, and the AcrylX layer is the bathing surface.

Three things follow from that construction:

• Large, continuous surfaces. Ella's acrylic wall panels reach from the base most of the way to the ceiling. The large panels include 98 by 60 inch back walls and 36 to 38 by 96 to 98 inch side walls, and three-piece acrylic wall systems come in white, CNC and digital print finishes.
• Support wherever it is needed. Because the walls are reinforced on all sides, grab bars and seats can be mounted anywhere on the wall. That matters when a bather's needs change after the shower is installed, and ADA accessories are available for the wall systems.
• A planned joint with the floor. The wall panels come down over the base edge, so water runs onto the pan rather than behind it. When a wall system does not quite reach an adjoining wall or fixture, an 8 inch wide L-shaped plastic filler piece with brackets closes the gap, and it can be trimmed if it is too large for the space.

What Choosing Tile Asks of You

Tile is a different kind of project. Tile needs a rigid, absorbent substrate that mortar can bond to, and acrylic is a smooth finished surface that does not accept thinset. That is why an Ella acrylic base is never tiled: tile laid over it would not bond reliably, could trap water underneath with no path to the drain, and would bury the molded slope and threshold the base relies on. So with an Ella base, a tiled finish belongs on the walls above the base. The rule at the bottom edge is the same one the acrylic panels follow: whatever wall finish you choose comes down over the base edge so water runs onto the pan rather than behind it. Sealux is a flexible flange made of a durable, waterproof adhesive fabric and a siliconized membrane that chemically bonds to the applied silicone sealant, and the video explains that this keeps the seal waterproof through general expansion and contraction and routine floor settling. The first step shown is marking the strip position on the shower walls, with one method for a two-wall enclosure and another for tighter three-wall enclosures. It is careful, measured work, and it sits on top of everything else a tiled wall needs.

Wall Finishes Side by Side

What the differences mean: the panel options arrive as finished surfaces, so the look you choose is the look you get, and the wall-to-base joint is part of the design. Tile gives you freedom of pattern, but the substrate, the bond and the sealed joint at the base are all built on site, and they are your tile installer's work. If what you love about tile is the look, the two middle rows are worth a careful read before you commit to a full tile job.

The Tile Look Without the Tile Work

The SMC subway-tile-look wall panels are sold as a 6-piece or 12-piece kit, and they are a different product from Ella's tongue-and-groove grout-free tiles, so name the exact item when you ask about it. The Cultured Marble Wall Surround video shows the other route. The travertine shower walls are made from a natural quartz and granite composite with a gel coat surface, described in the video as durable and easy to clean. The multi-piece surrounds can be carried and installed by one person, the panels can be glued over drywall, plaster, painted walls, Durock or even existing tiles, and the edges are factory finished for seamless panel joining but can be trimmed and cut for a custom fit. Cleaning and Everyday Care

Ella's care instructions treat AcrylX exactly like any acrylic fixture. The walls of a stall clean well with Soft Scrub applied with a cloth, while the floor is the surface that calls for a brush. For hard water staining, the team recommends Goo Gone or rubbing alcohol. Other cleaners are acceptable as long as they contain no ammonia, bleach or Clorox, because those products make the gloss dull, so check the label before trying anything new.
