In most homes, yes. Ella walk-in tubs are built for a standard three-wall alcove and can also stand free against one or two walls, so the space left by an old bathtub, a shower stall or a tub under a window is usually a good fit. The work is in the checking: measure the opening, compare it with the actual size on the spec sheet, and match the door side to your drain.

Measure the Opening, Not the Old Tub

Start with the finished space. Measure the length between the finished walls, the width from the back wall to the front edge of the alcove, and the height from the floor to the bottom of any window sill. Also check the doorways and hallways the tub must pass through on delivery day. Then compare those numbers with the actual dimensions listed for each model, because the size in a model name is a nominal figure. The Ella Petite is marketed as a 28 inch tub, but its actual size is 27.5 inches wide by 52 inches long by 35 inches tall, and the Ella Elite is 30 inches wide by 52 inches long by 35 inches tall. Replacing a Standard Bathtub

A standard bathtub alcove is commonly 60 inches long, and a walk-in tub does not have to fill that length on its own. Ella tubs shorter than 60 inches include an extension panel that closes the gap between the tub and the end wall, so a 52 inch model can go into a 60 inch alcove and still look finished. Replacing a Shower Stall

A shower stall footprint is often shorter and narrower than a tub alcove, which is why the compact 52 inch models are the usual starting point. Measure the wall-to-wall distance after the seat, glass enclosure and curb are removed, since those parts are not part of the finished opening. The exposed walls can then be finished with panels or a surround, and the options are listed in shower wall panels and surrounds. Your plumber confirms whether the existing drain and supply lines need to move to meet the tub, and your electrician confirms the electrical supply the tub needs.

Match the Door Side to Your Drain

On every Ella walk-in tub, the door and the drains are on opposite sides. A right-side door tub has its drains on the left, and a left-side door tub has its drains on the right, with sides taken as you face the tub. Choosing the door side that puts the tub drain over your existing house drain is the simplest way to avoid rerouting plumbing. If a toilet or vanity sits close to the front of the tub, an inward-swing door stays inside the tub footprint, while an outward-swing door needs clear floor space in front of the opening.

Tubs Under a Window

Compare the tub height on the spec sheet with the height of your sill, and if the sill sits above the tub deck a standard installation works. When the sill is lower, share a photo and the sill height with your installer so the window can be worked into the plan before you order.

If You Want to Lie Down

Walk-in tubs are designed for seated bathing, so a customer who wants to recline should look at the two Lay Down models, which have a glass side door and an optional glass shower screen. The LayDown 30 by 60 measures 60 inches long by 30 inches wide by 21 inches tall and needs a customer-supplied faucet, typically wall mounted, because no faucet option is offered on it. Steps to Confirm Fit Before Ordering

  1. Measure the finished opening: length, width, sill height and any obstruction in front of the tub.
  2. Compare those figures with the actual exterior size on the spec sheet, then choose the door side opposite your house drain.
