What Is an Aromatherapy Canister on a Walk-In Tub?

An aromatherapy canister on an Ella walk-in tub is an optional NuWhirl canister teed into the jet plumbing beneath the deck, topped by a chrome twist cap sitting flush on the tub deck. You add a scent cartridge or a few drops of essential oil, and the water circulating through the jets carries the aroma into the bath. Owners also call it the aromatherapy option or the scent canister.

How It Works

The system has four parts. The chrome Easy Grip cap is the only piece you see or touch. Below it, a canister measuring 1 5/8 inches in diameter by 2 7/8 inches long holds the scent. A nut secures the canister through the deck from below, and the canister sits on a standard 1 inch Schedule 40 PVC tee plumbed into the jet line. The cap itself is 2 3/8 inches across and 1 1/8 inches tall, and the deck hole is cut with a 1 11/16 inch hole saw. To use it, twist the cap open, insert a whirlpool scent cartridge or add your essential oil, twist the cap closed, fill the tub past the jets and run the hydro massage as usual. The circulating water passes the canister and disperses the scent through the jets. Our aromatherapy option article includes the installation video.

Which Ella Models Have It

The aromatherapy canister is an option rather than a standard feature, and it can be installed on almost any Ella walk-in tub that has sufficient free deck space, particularly when it is combined with other options that also take up deck space. It is listed among the factory-built systems in what can and cannot be customized, so the cleanest way to get it is to include it in your order so the deck hole and tee are done at the factory. Adding it to a tub that is already installed is not a standard retrofit: it means cutting the deck and teeing into the jet plumbing behind the apron, which is a job for a licensed contractor, so please ask your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 first so they can confirm whether your model has the space. Our choosing therapies article covers how it pairs with each package.

What to Know as an Owner

  • Use essential oils or whirlpool scent cartridges only. Crystals, beads, salts and bath bombs do not belong in the canister or in the jets. Our bath products rules article explains why.
  • The canister exists so scent stays in one chamber instead of being poured through the whole pump and jet system, which keeps residue out of the lines.
  • Refresh the scent whenever you like by twisting the cap open again.
  • Keep up the monthly vinegar flush; oils in the water call for it.
  • For a ticket, have your model, serial number and a photo of the cap on the deck ready at ellasbubbles.com/support.

Common Questions

Can I put essential oils directly in the jets of my walk-in tub?
The canister is the intended place for essential oils or scent cartridges. Pouring oils into the bath water is discouraged because they leave residue in the pump and jet lines, and bath bombs, salts, crystals and beads should stay out of the canister and the jets entirely.
Is there a separate diffuser or tray for the aromatherapy option?
No. The chrome twist cap on the deck is the whole visible system, and the canister sits beneath it. Everything else lives below the deck.
Can the aromatherapy canister be added after my tub is installed?
It is not a standard retrofit. It means cutting a 1 11/16 inch hole in the deck and teeing into the jet plumbing behind the apron, which is a job for a licensed contractor. Ask your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 first so they can confirm whether your model has the space and the right line to tap.
What size is the aromatherapy canister?
The canister is 1 5/8 inches in diameter and 2 7/8 inches long, and the chrome cap is 2 3/8 inches across and 1 1/8 inches tall. It sits on a standard 1 inch Schedule 40 PVC tee.
