During a power outage an Ella walk-in tub still drains and still lets you out, because the drains work by gravity alone and the door is operated by hand. What stops is the powered equipment: the hydro pump, the air blower, the control box and anything else on the tub's dedicated circuit. Draining and Getting Out Need No Electricity
There is no drain pump anywhere in an Ella walk-in tub. Water leaves through gravity-driven drains, so a power failure has no effect on emptying the tub. Ella's published guidance says it plainly: if the electricity goes out during a bath, the tub still drains and you can still exit safely. That is the reason the company does not build in a powered drain, which can be quicker but stresses house plumbing and stops working when power is lost.
The speed comes from Dual Drain Technology. Most Ella tubs use two oversized 2-inch drains connected to 4-port T-type drain bodies with stainless steel cables, and the easy-turn drain handles double as air vents so no air pocket slows the outflow. Under ideal house-drain conditions an average-size Ella tub drains in approximately 80 seconds, field tests have recorded complete drainage in as little as 52 seconds, and the fast-drain system is rated to empty the tub in less than 2 minutes. The Door Stays Shut Until the Water Is Gone, with or Without Power
Every Ella manual gives the same instruction: never open the door until the tub is completely drained. That rule is exactly the same in an outage, and nothing electrical is involved in keeping the door closed or letting it open. On inward-swing models the weight of the water presses the door against its seal, and the door opens once the water is gone. On outward-swing models the handle drives a gear-and-shaft mechanism, three latches on the U-shape door and two on the L-shape door, with oversized tapered pins that seat in the jamb as the handle completes its full 180-degree rotation. Rotating the handle fully back releases them. Both designs are worked by your hand, so the sequence in the dark is the same as any other night: turn the drain handles, wait for the tub to finish draining, then open the door normally. What Stops Working While the Power Is Off
Nearly every Ella tub runs on one or more dedicated 20 amp, 120 volt GFCI protected lines, and everything on those lines goes quiet when the house loses power. That includes the hydro pump, the air blower and the blue control box with its green power LED, which is why no button on the deck responds. There is nothing to reset and nothing to do about the tub's electrical side until power is back. Finish the bath by draining and stepping out, and leave the equipment compartment alone.
- Pumps and blower simply stop. They restart only when power is restored and the controls are pressed again.
- The control box may lose power mid-operation, and when that happens it sometimes needs its configuration re-learned after power returns.
- The GFCI protection on the dedicated line frequently trips during a storm or outage. Because that GFCI is often an outlet behind the front access panel rather than a breaker at your electrical panel, it is the item most owners miss afterward.
The One Exception: A Pumped Drain Connection
The gravity promise holds for the tub itself, but not for every house. If the only drain available at installation was a washing machine connection box or another connection sitting higher than the tub's drain outlets, your plumber will have added a pump to push the water up to it. That pump is part of the house plumbing rather than part of the tub, and, like any powered drain, it stops when power is lost. Water will not travel uphill on its own, so a tub plumbed that way cannot fully empty until the pump runs again. When the Power Comes Back: The Reset Sequence
If the jets, blower or lights on the control box do nothing after an outage, work upstream of the tub in a fixed order rather than assuming something failed.
- At the electrical panel, switch each of the tub's dedicated breakers fully off, then back on. If a breaker pops again the instant you reset it, stop and call a licensed electrician.
- Remove the front apron access panel. Many models use a large panel in front of the seat that pulls away by hand, while others are held with screws under caps.
- Find the GFCI outlet in the compartment and press Reset. If it will not hold, or trips as soon as a pump starts, leave power off and do not use the tub until an electrician has corrected it; a GFCI that fails test or reset indicates ground current or a failed device.
- Look at the green LED on the blue control box. Lit means power is reaching the box. Dark with a live outlet means the box's cord is not seated or the box itself is the problem.
- With the LED lit and water above the highest jets, press each button. If the box has power but nothing responds, run the control box reset.
One more sign to watch for after a storm is a hot plastic or hot rubber smell from the equipment compartment when the pumps first run again. That points to an electrical short in the control box or one of the pumps.
