The differences come down to two decisions. The first is footprint: the three standard sizes share a 60 inch length and differ only in width, so a 30, 32 or 36 inch deep opening is usually covered without a custom order. The second is the entry. A standard or step-in base has an edge to step over, a roll-in pan has no curb at all, and the SMC reversible base sits between them with its 1 inch profile. What a Shower Stall Is, in Ella Terms

A shower stall is the base on the floor plus the walls that enclose it, and Ella sells those pieces per item rather than as one bundle. You choose the base in your size, then the wall panels, and then any seat, grab bar, screen or filler piece the space needs. The base is finished acrylic and is ready to use once installed; it does not need to be tiled over. Your contractor sets the base, connects the drain and finishes the walls around it.

The wall side of the stall is just as standardized as the base. Ella shower wall panels are manufactured 98 inches high, with the back wall panel measuring 60 inches wide and side panels listed at 40 inches; the three-piece acrylic wall systems also list 36 to 38 inch side walls at 96 to 98 inches tall. Panels come in a plain white finish, a CNC routed design with light gray grout lines, and a digital print option. An 8 inch wide L-shaped plastic filler piece closes a gap between the base and an adjoining wall or fixture, and because it is plastic it can be trimmed down if the space is smaller than the piece. Standard, Roll-In or Step-In: Which Entry Fits the Bather

• Standard acrylic base. The set left or right drain makes it the easiest to plan around existing plumbing. If one of the three standard sizes fits, it is the simplest choice.
• Roll-in base. Built for a wheelchair, walker or shower chair to pass straight from the bathroom floor into the stall. On a standard base the drain sits in a set position for that size, left or right. Custom bases can place the drain left, right or center, but it must be at least 9 inches from each wall, so a drain only 7 inches from the threshold edge cannot be produced even on a custom pan. Custom bases are rectangular only, made for three-wall alcoves and corner installations, and the largest is 44 inches wide by 80 inches long.
