How Do I Clean the Air Jet Bubble Lines in My Walk-In Tub?

The air jet bubble lines in an Ella walk-in tub are cleaned with the same vinegar flush the hydro lines get: mix 2 cups of white vinegar with 2 cups of water, fill the tub to 1 inch above the highest jets, add the mixture, run the tub for 10 minutes, then drain. You run it once before the first bath and once a month after that, and the air system also clears itself between baths with an automatic Auto Purge that blows residual water out of the lines. How the Air Lines Stay Clean Between Flushes

Because the air and hydro systems are fully plumbed, nothing needs flushing after every bath. Two built-in helpers do the daily work. On hydro tubs, the ozone generator runs with the hydro system to sanitize the water lines. On the air side, Auto Purge starts automatically about 20 minutes after the air pump is turned off and runs for 120 seconds, blowing residual water out of the air lines so it does not sit there between baths. Auto Purge cannot be stopped and is perfectly normal, even if it starts while you are still in the tub or after you have left the room.

That leaves the monthly vinegar flush as the one wet cleaning the air lines receive, which is why it is worth doing on schedule rather than only when the bubbles look tired. Between flushes, the habit that matters most is rinsing: after a bath with soap or bubble bath, rinse the tub and run the hand shower over the jets so soap film does not dry inside them.

The Monthly Flush, Step by Step

1. Mix 2 cups of white vinegar with 2 cups of water.
2. Fill the tub with water to about 1 inch above the highest jets. Never run a pump with water below the jets.
3. Add the vinegar and water mixture to the tub.
4. Run the tub for 10 minutes so the solution circulates through all of the jetted systems, air and hydro alike.
5. Drain the tub completely and rinse the shell.

Press the push buttons gently with your palm, and only after the water covers the highest jets. On a three-speed air push control the first press is high, the second is medium, the third is low, and a fourth press turns the air off. Once you switch the air off after the flush, expect Auto Purge to run about 20 minutes later; that is the system finishing the job. The whole flush takes about fifteen minutes from start to finish, and the same recipe is the monthly routine going forward.

What Fouls the Air Lines, and What Does Not

Anything in the bath water can end up in the lines, so the biggest part of keeping the bubble lines clean is what you add to the water. Ella's published guidance sorts bath products into three groups.

• Epsom salt: fine when fully dissolved. Plain Epsom salt does not harm the pumps, heater or jets as long as it is dissolved before it goes into the water. An undissolved crystal can lodge in a jet, so dissolve it first. • Soap, shampoo and bubble bath: yes, sparingly. The air and hydro systems whip soap into far more foam than a standard tub, so use a fraction of the usual amount and rinse well afterward. Can You Use Bubble Bath or Shampoo With the Jets Running? explains how to manage the foam.
• Bath bombs, scented bath salts, bath oils and bath beads: not recommended. Oils, dye, glitter and floral bits can affect the mechanics and clog jets, and oils can get stuck in the jet and air pumps and damage the motors, which is not a warranty matter. If you use any of them, use them sparingly, rinse thoroughly and plan on an extra vinegar flush.

One more thing not to do: do not take an air jet out to clean it. Individual air jets cannot be removed or permanently closed off, because removing an air jet lets air escape from the system. The air jets are cleaned from the inside by the flush and by Auto Purge, not by pulling them. Cleaning the Air Lines After a Long Idle Period

If the tub sat unused for months or years, or came with the house, the same flush is the restart procedure, with a few extra checks first. Reset the GFCI and confirm the outlet is live, then look for the green LED on the blue control box before pressing any button. Confirm the air hose from each push button is seated firmly at the button and at the control box nipple, because a loose hose is the usual reason a bubble jet switch does nothing at all. A pump that shuts off and restarts by itself during the flush points to the control box rather than to anything in the lines, so note it for your ticket rather than flushing again and again.

A Simple Monthly Rhythm

• Once a month, run the vinegar flush and clear hair and debris from the pump inlet cover inside the tub at the same time.
• After any bath with soap, bubble bath or salt, rinse the tub and run the hand shower over the jets, and wipe chrome dry after a salt soak.
• Keep bath bombs, oils and scented salts out of the tub, or follow them with an extra flush.
• Let Auto Purge run its 120 seconds after the air is switched off; it is doing part of the cleaning for you.
