Do You Have to Sit in a Walk-In Tub While It Fills?

Why You Sit Down Before the Water Goes in

A walk-in tub has a door in its side wall, and that door is what lets you step in over a low threshold instead of climbing over a rim. The trade is simple. The door has to be closed and sealed before the tub can hold water, so the water can only go in once you are inside with the door locked. Ella's manuals go one step further and say you should never enter a tub that already has water in it, because Ella considers that dangerous.

On the inward-swing models the design makes the order feel natural. The acrylic S-shape inward-swing door on the Standard, Zen and Flow swings into the tub, and once you lock the interior handle the weight of the water presses the door more firmly into its seal as the tub fills. That is why the door holds so well, and it is also why it will not open until the tub has completely drained. Closing that door from a seated position is much harder than closing it while standing, so the habit to build is: enter, close and lock the door while standing, then sit. The sequence Ella publishes runs like this:

3. Close the drains completely. Most Ella tubs have dual 2 inch drains, while the Standard, Zen, Flow, Front Entry and LayDown tubs have a single drain. Do not fill above the center of the drain handle.
4. Turn on the water and set the temperature. On the five-piece fast-fill faucet, hot is on the left, cold on the right and the selector in the middle. Ella's manuals warn that water above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit may be harmful.
5. Fill until the water is 2 inches above the highest jets before the hydro pump goes on, and make sure every air jet is covered before the air massage starts.
6. Run your therapies, turn them off, open the drains fully and stay seated until the tub is empty, then open the door and step out.

How Long You Sit While the Tub Fills

This is the part people picture when they ask the question, and it is shorter than most expect. Ella's deck-mount fast-fill faucets deliver about 16 gallons per minute, and Ella publishes a fill range of 7 to 15 minutes depending on the size of the tub and the water supply configuration in your home. On a typical tub it takes about 10 minutes to reach the level where the hydro jets can be used and about 6 minutes more to reach the overflow. If your tub has the independent foot massage option and you only want a foot spa, you fill the footwell to just below the seat and just above the calf jets, so that wait is shorter still. A tub with a capacity of around 60 gallons fills quickly at that flow rate, and the size of your water heater matters as much as the faucet.

Staying Warm During the Wait

The five-piece and two-piece fast-fill faucets shorten the wait. The glossy acrylic interior acts like an insulator, so the inside walls help hold a comfortable temperature. Once the hydro massage is running, the in-line water heater keeps the bath water warm.

The fourth answer is the optional heated seat and backrest, a 4A radiant heating system sealed into the seat and backrest and run from its own small keypad. Because it heats the surfaces you sit and lean against rather than the water, it works whether the tub is empty or full, which makes it the feature built for the filling wait. Press the keypad 10 to 15 minutes before you enter so the surfaces are warm when you sit, then fill. The seat heater turns itself off after 20 minutes by design, and one more press restarts it. It does not warm the bath water, so fill hot from the faucet and let the in-line heater hold the temperature during the massage.

The Wait at the Other End

The same rule applies when the bath is over: the door stays shut until the tub is completely empty. Ella tubs drain by gravity rather than a pump. Models with the dual 2 inch drains typically empty in two minutes or less when connected to a proper 2 inch drain line, and Ella's video puts an average tub at approximately 80 seconds under ideal conditions. Turn every drain handle fully open and stay seated until the water is gone. The door and the drains sit on opposite sides of the tub, so a right-side door tub drains on the left and a left-side door tub drains on the right as you face it.

One thing surprises new owners after the bath. About 20 minutes after the air pump is turned off, the air system's Auto Purge starts on its own and runs for 120 seconds to blow residual water out of the air lines. It is fully automatic, cannot be stopped, and is normal even if it starts while you are still sitting in the tub.
