Does the Ella walk-in tub door leak once it is filled?

No. An Ella walk-in tub door is built to stay dry once the tub is filled, and every tub is fill-tested to prove it before the walls are closed: the installer fills the tub 3 inches above the highest jet, lets the water stand for 30 minutes, then runs every electrical component for another 30 minutes while checking for moisture. How Ella Doors Seal

Ella builds two door platforms, and both are designed to hold a full tub once the door is latched:

• The outward-swing U-shape door on the Capri, Monaco, Front Entry, Mobile, Lounger, ShaK and Big4One is made of plastic (PVC) composite and tempered glass in a white composite frame. It closes on a 3-latch gear and shaft mechanism, and the family video states that this unique mechanism assures a tight seal. The Tub4Two uses the same outward-swing door and three-latch mechanism. Because this door swings out into the room, it needs clear floor space in front of the tub.
• The inward-swing acrylic S-shape door is the platform on the Standard, and the Zen and Zen60 use that same S-shape door; the spec sheets' U-shape wording for the Zen tubs is a misprint.

On every Ella tub the door side is chosen at order time, and the drains land on the opposite side from the door: a right-side door tub has its drains on the left, and a left-side door tub has its drains on the right, sides as you face the tub. The Tub Must Be Level Before the Seal Is Judged

A door seal can only be judged on a level tub. Ella's water test instructions say plainly that an unlevel tub can leak at the door during the test, and the corner-leak guidance adds that an unlevel frame opens gaps at the wall and the door together. Every leg must bear equal weight, and the door must be aligned before the tub is filled. If a brand new installation ever weeps at the door, leveling is the first thing to check, before anyone touches the seal itself. The installer also wipes the door seal clean before the test, because grit on the gasket is the simplest reason a good seal does not close cleanly.

The Fill Test That Proves the Seal Before the Walls Close

Every Ella walk-in tub goes through the same one hour check, and it is the direct answer to the question of whether the door leaks once the tub is filled:

1. Place the tub on a flat, level surface and confirm the door is aligned.
2. Wipe the door seal clean and tape the drains shut.
3. Fill the tub to 3 inches above the highest jet, or to the bottom of the grab bar on a tub with no jets.
4. Let the water stand for 30 minutes while looking around and under the tub for any moisture.
5. Run each electrical component on its rated 3-prong cord, plugged into separate outlets, for another 30 minutes, and inspect every union again while the pumps move water. Pumps never start before water covers all the jets.

Ella strongly suggests running this test outside, before the tub is carried in, so any adjustment happens while everything is easy to reach. The test flows straight into warranty activation, where your installer confirms a watertight door seal after a 20 minute fill and watertight connections with the pumps running. Water You See Is Usually Not the Door

When an owner reports a leaking walk-in tub, the door itself is usually dry and the water is coming from one of three other places:

• At the wall corners while the tub is full or while you splash. Ella tubs have a flat deck edge with no molded tile lip, so a tile flange must overlap the tub edge, the wall finish must overlap the flange, and every joint must be siliconed. • Under the tub. The unions at the pump and heater, the air tube fittings, the push button gaskets and the drain elbow are the places to trace with the access panels open, adding one source at a time. A drip at a union after shipping is a normal install-stage adjustment: the union was over-tightened or its O-ring shifted, and the fix is to disassemble it, re-seat the O-ring and reassemble it snugly.
• Behind the tub near the deck-mounted hand shower. If the hand shower was wall-mounted without the 5 foot barrel extension hose, water from the hose drips into the hand shower base and through the deck insert hole. A quick way to sort them: dry everything, fill the tub with the door closed and let it stand. If the door and the corners stay dry until you splash or use the hand shower, the water is coming over the deck edge at the wall, not through the door.

Warranty, and What to Do If You Ever See Water at the Door

The Lifetime Limited Warranty covers the bathtub shell, frame, door, door seal and finish, along with the supporting equipment, for parts only. It applies to the first purchaser, is nontransferable and is tied to the original installation address. It is void if ownership changes or the tub is relocated, it excludes tubs modified or repaired by anyone other than Ella's Bubbles, and labor, installation, removal and water damage to the home are never covered. Warranty activation must be completed and returned to put the warranty in force, so keep that paperwork with your order.
