Do Ella 32x60 walk-in tubs recline, or do you sit upright?

Ella walk-in tubs are seated soaking tubs, so on nearly every model you sit close to upright on a molded seat at chair height, with only a gentle lean built into the shell. On the 60 inch length, two tubs change that: the LayDown 30x60 has no seat at all and is built for lying down, and the Longer 27x60 has an extended seat area so you can scoot down and stretch your legs out. Ella's guides list those 60 inch long tubs at 27 and 30 inches wide, so if your measurement is 32 by 60 inches, bring that footprint to your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 to confirm which model fits it. The published backrest figures for the seated models are in How Far Does the Backrest Recline? Published Backrest Angles and What Owners Say About Seating Comfort by Model.

How Upright a Seated Ella Tub Really Is

The spec drawings print a backrest angle for four models: the Ultra at 88 degrees, the Flow at 96 degrees, and the Monaco and Mobile at 101 degrees. Think of the seat as the floor of a protractor. A 90 degree backrest is straight up and down, and anything above 90 leans back, so 96 degrees is a little more relaxed than 88, and 101 degrees is the most reclined figure printed on a current drawing. None of these angles is anywhere near a lounge chair. A walk-in tub keeps you seated with your feet in the footwell, and the water does the relaxing.

Most other spec sheets leave the angle off the drawing. If you want the number for a specific model, ask your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 to read it from the CAD drawing rather than estimating from a photo. Two descriptions from support conversations help fill the gap, as long as you treat them as how the seat feels and not as specifications. The TransferXXL backrest is only slightly reclined, roughly 10 to 15 degrees off vertical by the team's reading of the drawing, which suits bathers who want an upright seat. The Big4One 33x66 is described by the team as the most comfortable seating position in the line.

The Deluxe is the clearest example of the upright philosophy. At 30 by 55 inches it is designed as a deeper soaking tub rather than a stretch-out tub, so you sit more upright and sink lower into the water. Ella's guides list a 17 inch seat height on most seated models, which means you sit down and stand up from a raised seat the way you would from a chair.

The Two 60 Inch Tubs Built for Leaning Back or Lying Down

The Longer measures 27 by 60 inches and has an extended seat area, so a bather can scoot down and stretch their legs out rather than sitting fully upright. It still has a seat; the extra interior length is what lets you settle back. It tends to suit someone of smaller stature, such as a person around 5 feet 6 inches and 125 pounds, who wants more room to lie back.

The LayDown 30x60 goes further. It is a lie-down tub with no built-in seat, laid out like a conventional bathtub with a long flat floor and straight sidewalls, behind a low glass side door. The spec sheet lists an interior floor of 46 inches long by 20 inches wide, with the soaking space opening up to 53 inches by 25 1/2 inches above the floor, inside an exterior of 30 inches wide by 60 inches long by 21 inches high. Its soaking depth is 15 inches, compared to about 11 inches in a standard bathtub, which is why the product video calls it much deeper and roomier than an average tub. The rest of the interior is simple:

  • A textured, slip-resistant floor and straight sidewalls.
  • A single oversized 2 inch brass drain with overflow.
  • A tempered glass, inward-swing side door in a brushed-finish aluminum frame, with a low threshold for stepping in.

One detail causes confusion. The LayDown spec sheet uses the same template as the seated tubs and prints a seat line, even though LayDown tubs have no seat. Set that line aside and plan around the floor and depth figures. The sides look straight, but the shell has a slight curve at the back for support, and the team recommends adding the seat pillow for extra comfort. Bathers over six feet tall who have a longer run of wall can look at the LayDown 32x72, which prints 71 3/4 inches as its overall length. Seated or Reclined, Side by Side

The table uses only the figures published in Ella's guides and drawings. Where a figure is not printed, the cell says not listed.

ModelSizeBackrest or seating figureBest for
LayDown 30x6030 inches wide by 60 inches long by 21 inches high; interior floor 46 by 20 inchesNo seat; 15 inch soaking depthA full-length reclined soak in the space of a standard 60 inch bathtub
LayDown 32x7232 inches wide by 72 inches long; height not listedNo seat; 15 inch soaking depthBathers over six feet tall with a longer run of wall
Longer27 by 60 inchesExtended seat area; angle not listedScooting down and stretching the legs out while still seated
Deluxe30 by 55 inchesSit upright in deeper water; 19 inch seat-to-overflow depthSitting upright and sinking lower into the water
Monaco32 by 52 inches101 degreesThe most reclined figure printed on a current drawing, with an out-swing door
Mobile26 by 45 inches101 degreesThe same lean as the Monaco in a much smaller footprint
Flow28 by 48 inches96 degreesA mild lean in the smallest inward-door tub
Ultranot listed88 degrees; 17 inch seat height and 19 inch seat lengthAn upright, supported seat

What the differences mean: if you want to lie flat, only the LayDown tubs do it, and they give up the seat and the chair-height entry to do so. If you want to sit but lean back a little, the Longer gives you room to scoot down on a 60 inch length, while the Monaco and Mobile print the most lean among the seated tubs on shorter footprints. If you want to sit up and soak deep, the Deluxe and the Ultra are built around that posture. A 32 by 60 inch footprint does not match any of the published sizes above, so confirm the model before you plan the alcove.

What Sitting Upright Does to the Soak

Because you bathe sitting up on a molded seat rather than lying down, the number that matters is the seat-to-overflow depth, not the height of the tub wall. Seat-to-overflow runs roughly 15 1/2 inches on the Elite, Petite and Royal, about 17 inches on the Capri and Lounger, 19 inches on the Deluxe, and 22 inches on the Big4One, and the Ultra video states a 17 1/2 inch soaking depth measured from the top of the seat to the center of the overflow. The Deluxe shows all three numbers together: a 47 1/2 inch interior length, a 15 1/2 inch seat length and a 19 inch seat-to-overflow depth.

Interior length and seat length decide how you sit in that water. A tub with more legroom lets you stretch out and settle lower, and a shorter interior keeps you more upright. Your own size decides the result, since a taller bather sits higher in the water than a shorter one in the same tub. There is no soaking depth calculator; measure yourself seated, from the seat surface to your shoulders, and compare that with the seat-to-overflow figure on the spec sheet. What Is Soaking Depth on a Walk-In Tub? explains the three measurements in detail.

Making an Upright Seat Feel Right

An upright seat is a design choice, not a limitation, and a few things change how it feels. The Elite pairs its 22 inch seat with a removable backrest and a removable swivel tray. Depending on the model, you can add a 10 by 7.5 inch head pillow for added comfort, and the team recommends the seat pillow on the LayDown. Nearly every seated model has a built-in grab bar positioned for entering, exiting and standing up from the seat, and the deck-mounted faucet with pull-out hand shower keeps filling and rinsing within reach while you sit. Which Bathtubs Come With a Built-In Seat for Comfortable Bathing? compares the seats model by model. Door swing is the other variable: the Monaco uses an out-swing door that opens away from the tub interior, the Deluxe comes with an in-swing door, and Walk-in Tub Model Highlights: Longer, Deluxe, Monaco, and Transfer XXL sets those models side by side.

Common Questions

Is there an Ella 32x60 walk-in tub that reclines?
Ella's guides list the 60 inch long tubs at 27 inches wide for the Longer and 30 inches wide for the LayDown. The LayDown 30x60 lies you down with no seat, and the Longer lets you scoot down and stretch out. Bring a 32 by 60 inch footprint to your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 to confirm which model matches it.
How far back does the seat lean on a seated Ella tub?
The printed drawings show 88 degrees on the Ultra, 96 degrees on the Flow, and 101 degrees on the Monaco and Mobile, where 90 degrees is straight up. All of them are far from a lounge chair. The team can read the angle from the CAD drawing for any other model.
Can you lie down in the LayDown 30x60 tub?
Yes. The LayDown 30x60 has no seat, a flat textured floor of 46 by 20 inches, and a 15 inch soaking depth. It is built for a full-length reclined soak in the space of a standard 60 inch bathtub.
Does the Longer walk-in tub still have a seat?
Yes. The Longer measures 27 by 60 inches and has an extended seat area, so you can scoot down and stretch your legs out instead of sitting fully upright. It tends to suit a bather of smaller stature.
Which Ella walk-in tub has the most reclined backrest?
Among the printed figures, the Monaco and Mobile at 101 degrees lean the most. The team describes the Big4One as the most comfortable seating position in the line, and the LayDown tubs lie you down fully because they have no seat.
Does sitting upright mean a shallower soak than lying down?
Not necessarily. Seated Ella tubs publish seat-to-overflow depths from roughly 15 1/2 inches on the Elite to 22 inches on the Big4One, while the LayDown tubs offer a 15 inch soaking depth. Measure yourself seated from the seat surface to your shoulders and compare with the spec sheet.
