Does the installer also build the surround and widen the doorway?

Mis à jour Novembre 2026

Ella's Bubbles has no installers of its own, so there is no single Ella crew that sets the tub, builds the surround and widens the doorway. Every Ella walk-in tub is installed by an independent licensed contractor, and whether that one contractor also handles the wall surround and any doorway framing is a scope question you settle with that contractor when they visit your home and give you a written estimate. Can Ella's installers widen my doorway, or do I need a contractor? covers the doorway side of that question; this page puts the surround and the doorway together so you can plan the whole job with one set of trades.

Why There Is No Ella Installer to Assign the Work to

Ella's Bubbles builds the walk-in tub, and installation is not included with it. Ella does not have installation crews and does not send technicians to your home. A local licensed plumber and electrician remove the old tub, make the plumbing and electrical connections, and set the new tub. Ella's side of the job is the tub itself, the specification sheets, the electrical diagrams for the therapies you choose, and free lifetime technical support by phone and email for whoever does the work, including live video help on request.

That division answers the first half of the question. The installer provides the site visit, the labor and any materials the job calls for, and installation pricing is set by the contractor and never by Ella. If the walls around the tub need to be finished, or the entry path has to change before the tub can come in, that work sits on the installer's side of the line. So the plain answer to "does the installer also build the surround and widen the doorway" is that the installer you hire does whatever the two of you agree is in the job, and Ella has no say in that scope.

Two kinds of trade partner can fill the role. Partner installers in Ella's network are third-party contractors, not Ella employees, and Who Installs My Walk-in Tub? Hiring a Licensed Contractor and How Ella Supports Them explains how the team introduces one in your area through its nationwide network, including Angi Pro. Ella dealers sell Ella tubs in their territory and often install them as well. In either case, once the introduction is made you coordinate scheduling, materials and timelines with that business directly. You are also free to hire any local licensed plumber and electrician you trust, and certification by Ella is not required.

The Surround: A Product You Order, a Job Your Contractor Does

The surround does not have to be built from scratch unless you want a tiled wall. Ella's Bubbles manufactures wall surround systems designed for walk-in tubs that enclose the area around the tub, and an acrylic top portion is available for these surrounds, which gives the installation a finished, watertight look above the tub deck. Shower Bases and Wall Panels describes those surrounds alongside Ella's shower wall panels, which are built 98 inches high with 40 inch side panels and a 60 inch back wall and come in a plain white finish, a CNC routed design with light gray grout lines, and a digital print option.

Because the surround is an Ella product, it is ordered through your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850, ideally at the same time as the tub so both arrive before the installer is scheduled. Putting it on the wall is installation labor, and that belongs to your contractor. The video on this page shows how manageable that work is: Ella's cultured marble shower wall panels are multi-piece surrounds that one person can carry and install, they are glued over drywall, plaster, painted walls, Durock or even existing tiles, and the factory-finished edges can be trimmed and cut for a custom fit. A plumber who sets tubs for a living can often take that on, but confirm it when you ask for the estimate rather than assuming.

  • Ask whether the estimate includes removing the old surround or tile.
  • Ask whether it includes installing the Ella surround, or finishing the wall with tile instead.
  • Ask who supplies the adhesive, trim and caulk, since the installer provides any materials the job calls for.

The Doorway: Who Measures It, Who Decides, Who Does the Work

Ella's ordering guidance has the contractor measure the bathroom space and every doorway and hallway on the path in, and locate the house drain, before anything is ordered. That visit is what confirms the tub can be installed in your situation, and it is the natural moment to raise a tight doorway. When the team introduces a partner installer, it sends that installer your contact information, the specifications for the model and the electrical diagrams ahead of time. The installer then contacts you directly, visits the home to take measurements, and provides an estimate for the installation work.

Whether a doorway actually needs widening depends on the model, and the figures matter. Walk-in tub dimensions by model: exterior sizes, seat widths, and door types lists every actual exterior size, from the compact Mobile at 26 inches wide by 45 inches long up to the bariatric ShaK at 36 inches wide by 72 inches long. The tub has to pass through the front door, the hallway, every interior doorway and each corner it must turn, so the installer compares the tub's width with the narrowest point on that route. If the path is the problem, opening up or reframing a doorway is carpentry, and the installer either does it or tells you to bring in a carpenter or general contractor for that part. Either way the decision and the labor are the contractor's, and the team is glad to talk with them about the tub itself.

Where the Surround and the Fit Question Become One Job

The surround and the doorway meet at the alcove. A nominal 60 inch tub measures about 59 3/4 inches long on the shell, and once drywall and tile go onto the end walls, the finished opening is shorter than the framing. One common bathroom framed for a standard tub measures only 58 1/4 inches tile to tile. Will a 60 Inch Tub Fit a 60 Inch Alcove? Stud Walls, Finished Walls and Doorway Clearance explains the two measurements. A contractor can sometimes remove the old surround, set the new tub against the drywall and finish the tile down to the tub, which is exactly the point where the surround work and the fit question turn into a single piece of labor. The long tubs have no wiggle room: the Shak is 72 inches long and cannot fit a 70 inch opening no matter how the walls are finished. When the tub is shorter than the opening, an extension panel fills the gap so the tub still meets the wall. Only your contractor can confirm any of this after seeing the walls.

Sequence matters too. The installer sets, levels, connects and tests the tub before closing the walls, so the surround or tile goes on after the tub has been run and checked, not before. That is one more reason to have the same contractor own both pieces, or at least to have the two trades agree on who comes when.

How to Scope the Whole Job in One Conversation

  1. Send your full installation address to the team through ellasbubbles.com/support or by calling (800) 480-6850, along with the model you are considering and the therapy options that interest you, since the electrical work depends on those choices.
  2. Have the contractor measure the bathroom, every doorway and hallway on the path in, and the location of the house drain before anything is ordered.
  3. Walk the contractor through the three pieces of work in that one visit: setting and connecting the tub, finishing the walls around it, and any change to the entry path.
  4. Ask for a written estimate that lists each piece separately, and ask more than one installer if you can, because labor pricing is set by the contractor and not by Ella.
  5. Order the tub and the Ella surround together through your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 so both are on site when the installer is scheduled.

Ella's technical support backs you and your installer for the life of the tub at no charge, with manuals, spec sheets and live video chat on request, and that help covers the tub: setting, leveling, connections and testing. Questions about framing a doorway or how a wall should be finished go to your contractor and your local building code.

Questions fréquentes

Does Ella's Bubbles send its own crew to build the tub surround?
No. Ella's Bubbles has no installation crews and does not send technicians to your home. Every Ella tub is installed by an independent licensed contractor, and any surround work is part of what you arrange with that contractor.
Can the plumber who sets the tub also install the Ella wall surround?
That is between you and the contractor, so ask when you request the estimate. The Ella surround is a panel system rather than a built wall, and Ella's cultured marble panels can be carried and installed by one person and glued over drywall, plaster, painted walls, Durock or existing tile. Many installers take it on, but confirm it is listed in the written estimate.
Who decides whether my doorway has to be widened?
Your contractor does, during the measuring visit that happens before anything is ordered. The contractor measures every doorway and hallway on the path in and compares them with the tub's actual exterior width. If the path is too tight, the contractor either reframes the opening or tells you to bring in a carpenter or general contractor.
Is the wall surround included with the walk-in tub?
The wall surround is a separate Ella product offered for walk-in tubs, with an optional acrylic top portion. It is ordered through your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850, and ordering it with the tub keeps the two deliveries together.
Is the surround installed before or after the tub goes in?
After. The installer sets, levels, connects and tests the tub before closing the walls, so the surround or tile is finished down to the tub once it has been run and checked. If two different trades are involved, agree on that order before the first one arrives.
