A standard bathtub is built around a 60 inch alcove, the three-wall opening that nearly every replacement tub is measured against, and it soaks about 11 inches deep. Ella's published material does not list a fixed width or overall height for a standard tub, but Ella's own conventional step-over alcove tubs, the Solo 32x60 and the Fiji 36x66, stand 24 inches tall, and How tall are bathtubs and walk-in tubs, and why does it matter? sets those heights beside the walk-in models. This page explains what each of the standard figures means, how Ella's tubs compare with them, and what the 60 inch footprint decides when you replace a tub.
The Three Figures That Describe a Standard Bathtub
When people ask how large a bathtub is, they usually mean one of three things: how long it runs along the wall, how wide it is from the back wall to the front apron, and how tall it stands from the floor to the rim. Ella's size guides describe the standard bathtub by the first figure. A conventional tub sits in a three-wall alcove that is 60 inches long, and that opening is the footprint every replacement is measured against, whether the new tub is a walk-in model or another step-over tub.
The figure people want next is usually not the exterior height but the soaking depth, which is how deep the water gets. A standard bathtub soaks about 11 inches deep. That is the number Ella's own LayDown video uses when it compares the lie-down tubs with a standard tub, and it is why Ella's guides describe a standard tub by its depth rather than by a published overall height. No fixed width or overall height for a standard bathtub appears in Ella's material, so treat any single figure you see elsewhere as a typical value rather than a rule, and measure the tub you actually have.
Ella's two conventional step-over tubs show what a modern alcove tub looks like in real numbers. The Solo is 32 inches wide by 60 inches long and 24 inches tall. It holds 85 gallons unoccupied and 45 to 65 gallons with a bather in it. The Fiji is 36 inches wide by 66 inches long, also 24 inches tall, and holds 90 gallons unoccupied and 55 to 75 gallons occupied. Both are microbubble tubs you step over rather than walk into, so they are the closest thing in the Ella line to the standard bathtub most people picture.
Standard Bathtub and Ella Sizes Side by Side
The table uses only the sizes printed on the current spec sheets and in Ella's published guides. Widths are exterior, lengths run along the wall, and heights are from the floor to the top of the rim. Where a figure is not published, the cell says so rather than estimating.
| Tub | Width by length | Height | Soaking depth or capacity | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard bathtub (reference) | Width not listed; 60 inch alcove | not listed | About 11 inch soaking depth | The footprint every replacement is measured against |
| Ella Solo 32x60 (step-over alcove tub) | 32 by 60 inches | 24 inches | 85 gallons; 45 to 65 occupied | A microbubble tub in a standard alcove |
| Ella Fiji 36x66 (step-over alcove tub) | 36 by 66 inches | 24 inches | 90 gallons; 55 to 75 occupied | A wider and longer step-over tub |
| Ella LayDown 30x60 (walk-in) | 30 by 60 inches | 21 inches | 15 inch soaking depth | A lie-down walk-in soak in the standard 60 inch alcove |
| Ella Petite (walk-in) | 27.5 by 52 inches | 35 inches | not listed | The narrowest walk-in footprint Ella makes |
| Ella Elite (walk-in) | 30 by 52 inches | 35 inches | not listed | A compact seated walk-in with a wider seat than the Petite |
| Ella Ultimate (walk-in) | Width not listed; 59.5 inches long | 35 3/4 inches | 95 gallons; 55 to 85 occupied | Filling a standard 60 inch alcove without an extension panel |
| Ella Companion (two-seat walk-in) | 32 by 60 inches | 40 inches | not listed | Two average-size bathers in a 60 inch alcove |
What the differences mean: the standard tub and Ella's step-over tubs share a low rim, at 24 inches on the Solo and Fiji, because you climb over the wall to get in. A seated walk-in tub stands far taller, 35 to 40 inches across the models that publish a height, because you step through a door and the tall shell is what gives you a deep seated bath. The LayDown turns that around. At 21 inches high it is lower than any other tub in the table, yet its 15 inch soaking depth is deeper than the roughly 11 inches of a standard bathtub, so a low exterior does not mean a shallow bath. On length, the Solo, LayDown 30x60, Ultimate and Companion all fill the 60 inch alcove outright, while the 52 inch Petite and Elite need an extension panel to close the gap at one end.
How Tall Is a Bathtub, and Which Height Matters
Height, soaking depth and seat depth are three different numbers, and the one you need depends on what you are deciding. The exterior height is the figure to check against anything above the tub, because a 35 inch walk-in shell sits well above the 24 inch step-over tub it usually replaces. Ella's guide to walk-in sizes points out that the 35 inch height of the compact 52 inch tubs clears most window sills, which is the check people most often forget. The full lineup of walk-in widths, lengths and heights is laid out in How big are walk-in tubs, and how tall do they stand?.
Soaking depth is what you feel. In a seated tub it is set by three things: the interior length of the tub, the length of the seat, and the depth from the top of the seat to the overflow drains. That seat-to-overflow figure runs roughly 15 to 18 inches across Ella's mid-size models, and a tall bather with a long torso sits higher in the water than a shorter bather on the same seat. The comparison of seated heights, from the 35 inch Petite and Elite to the 39 inch Deluxe, is in How Tall Are Walk-In Tubs Compared to Standard Tubs?.
What the 60 Inch Footprint Decides When You Replace a Tub
Because the standard alcove is 60 inches long, the length of the new tub decides how the opening gets closed. A 60 inch model fills it outright. Ella's 52 and 55 inch models use an extension panel to fill the leftover gap at one end, which is how a compact walk-in tub goes into a full-size alcove without rebuilding the walls. The Ultimate, at 59.5 inches long, is the model Ella names for filling a standard 60 inch alcove with no extension panel at all.
Going the other way, a tub longer than 60 inches is oversized for a standard alcove and needs a longer run of wall. The LayDown72 is 32 inches wide by 72 inches long, with its overall length printed as 71 3/4 inches on the spec drawing, a full foot beyond the standard opening. What is an oversized bathtub and who actually needs one? explains who benefits from that extra length and why the word oversized in Ella's listings often refers to a drain or a jet rather than the whole tub. The largest single-seat walk-in tubs, the 33 1/8 by 66 inch Big4One and the 36 by 72 inch ShaK, are compared in What is the biggest walk-in bathtub size you can buy?.
Before you talk with your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850, write down three figures from your own bathroom: the length of the alcove from wall to wall, the width from the back wall to the front edge of the current tub, and the height from the floor to any window sill or ledge above the tub. Those three numbers, checked against the actual sizes in the table rather than the rounded model names, tell you which tubs fit as a straight replacement and which need an extension panel or more wall.
