Yes. One person can bathe alone in an Ella two-seat walk-in tub, and Ella's own sizing guidance points to the wider two-seat models such as the Escape and Big4Two as tubs that give a single bather an exceptional amount of room to stretch out, with feet up on the second seat. The bathing sequence does not change when one seat is empty, and the same seated measurements that choose a one-seat tub still decide the fit, which is why What size walk-in tub fits a six-foot-tall person? lists a two-seat tub as one of the options for a single tall bather.
Two Meanings of Bathing Alone
The question usually means one of two things, and it helps to separate them before you decide on a tub.
- One bather, two seats. This is a question of room, and a two-seat Ella tub answers it generously. Ella describes the Escape and Big4Two as giving one bather exceptional space, with the second seat serving as a footrest, so a person who wants to recline further than a single-seat tub allows gets that extra length without moving up to the long-seat Big4One or ShaK.
- Bathing without anyone else in the room. This depends on the bather, not on the tub. Ella's caregiver guidance is clear that a bather who needs help should never be left alone in the tub, whatever the model. A bather who steps in, sits, locks the door and manages the drains and faucet without assistance can bathe unattended in a two-seat tub just as they would in any other Ella tub.
If the second seat is meant for a partner some of the time, read the fit section below before you order, because a tub that suits the taller bather can be uncomfortable for the shorter one.
The Sequence Is the Same with One Seat Empty
An Ella walk-in tub is built so the bather is seated with the door closed and locked before any water goes in, and stays seated until the tub is completely empty. How to Take a Bath in Your Walk-In Tub: The Sequence From Stepping In to Stepping Out walks through the full order, and none of it changes when you are the only person in a two-seat tub.
- Step over the low threshold, turn and sit on the seat you intend to use, keeping your feet and knees clear of the door as it closes.
- Close and lock the door with the locking handle. Never enter a tub that already has water in it; Ella considers that dangerous.
- Close the drains completely. Most Ella tubs have dual 2 inch drains, and both must be closed.
- Set the temperature carefully at the faucet. Ella's manuals warn that water above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit may be harmful. Fill time is typically 7 to 15 minutes, and you should never fill above the center of the drain handle.
- Fill to the level your therapy needs: 2 inches above the highest jets before the hydro pump goes on, and every air jet covered before the air massage starts.
- Run your therapies, turn them off, then open every drain handle fully and stay seated. An average dual-drain tub empties in about 80 seconds under ideal conditions.
- Open the door only when the tub is completely empty, then step out.
Because you fill after you are seated and drain before you stand, the empty second seat never comes into play for safety. You are enclosed by the sealed, latched door for the whole bath exactly as in a single-seat model.
Check the Fit Before Choosing a Two-Seat Tub for One
Height alone does not pick the tub. Ella's measuring method asks you to sit in a chair facing a wall, in a relaxed position, and take three measurements: your hips while seated, your shoulder width while seated, and your length from head to feet. The tub seat must be wider than your seated hip measurement, and Ella seats run from 19 inches on the Petite and Transfer26 to 29 inches on the TransferXXL. Seat height also varies, at about 17 inches on many models and about 15 inches on the Escape, the Mobile and the stainless-door family.
Two cautions from Ella's sizing pages apply directly here. First, bigger is not automatically better. The long seats on the Big4One and ShaK suit bathers around 6 feet and taller and can be uncomfortable for an average or shorter person, so a two-seat tub chosen for its size should still be checked against your own seated measurements. Second, if a shorter partner will ever share the tub, compare both sets of measurements before you decide. Soaking depth is set by the interior length, the seat length and the depth from the top of the seat to the overflow drains, and a tall bather with a long torso sits higher in the water than a shorter bather on the same seat.
Features That Help a Solo Bather
The features that make any Ella tub safe for a person bathing on their own, described in Are walk-in tubs safe for seniors and people with limited mobility?, are the same ones to look for in a two-seat model: a low threshold, a chair-height seat, grab bars on most models, a 5 foot hand shower so washing does not require reaching or standing, and a door that locks.
Two optional items make solo bathing more comfortable. The heated seat and backrest, shown in the second video on this page, is turned on by pressing its button once. Press it 10 to 15 minutes before you enter the tub for maximum comfort, and it switches off automatically after 20 minutes, ready to be pressed again if you want more. The Big4Two accessories video shows the options built with couples in mind: dual rain shower heads that let one bather stand while the other sits safely, dual extendable multi-function hand showers, and a four-fold glass screen that combines with a three-fold screen as a bright alternative to a shower curtain. With one person in the tub, either shower head and either hand shower is within reach from whichever seat you choose.
Keep the caregiver habits in mind even when you bathe alone: warm the seat first, keep the room warm, and never lean on the door. Bathing Someone With Limited Mobility in a Walk-In Tub covers what changes when a second person is helping rather than sharing the bath.
