Ella's Bubbles builds its shower walls in acrylic, and this page speaks only for the Ella line, so it does not rank tile in general. What Ella's documentation does settle is where each finish belongs in a remodel: acrylic wall kits are sized to specific alcoves and go up as large finished panels, tile belongs on the walls above a base that has a tile flange, and the acrylic shower base itself is never tiled over. The acrylic kits are compared for size and finish in What Are the Best Acrylic Shower Walls for a Bathroom Remodel?, and this page weighs them against a tiled wall and the tile-look panels.
How an Ella Acrylic Shower Wall Is Made
Ella's acrylic walls are large finished panels rather than many small pieces. The acrylic 3-panel kit has one back panel 60 inches wide and two side panels 40 inches wide, in a 98 or 105 inch height, and the panels are 0.118 inch thick ABS and PMMA composite with a glossy, warm-to-the-touch sanitary acrylic surface. The marble-look 6-piece kit in Carrara White is 1/8 inch thick acrylic with storage shelves on the left side, and the three-piece acrylic systems come in white, CNC and digital print finishes, with ADA accessories available.
The point that matters most for a remodel is that Ella's acrylic kits are sized to specific alcoves and are not cut down on site. You choose the kit whose footprint matches your alcove and whose height fits under your ceiling, and the panels go up as they arrive. That is why the first step with acrylic is measuring the alcove rather than choosing a pattern, and why a room that does not match a published footprint pushes you toward a trimmable panel or toward tile.
Where Tile Belongs in an Ella Shower
Tile has a place in an Ella shower, but it is on the walls, never on the base. The Ella acrylic shower base is a finished surface with its slope, threshold and drain molded in, and tile, thinset or a waterproofing membrane should not be applied on top of it. Tile needs a rigid, absorbent substrate that mortar can bond to, and acrylic does not accept thinset, so tile laid over it would not bond reliably and could trap water underneath with no path to the drain. Tiling over the pan would also bury the molded slope and threshold that move water to the drain. The reasoning is laid out in Can You Tile Over an Ella Acrylic Shower Base?.
If you want tiled walls, order a base built for them. A custom size shower base has a tile flange, so it works well in a shower where the walls will be tiled, and custom bases can be made in sizes such as 45 inches wide by 60.75 inches long, with the drain on the left, right or center and a 2-inch or 4-inch front threshold. Whatever wall finish you choose comes down over the base edge so water runs onto the pan rather than behind it, and the joint between tile and base is the detail to confirm with your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 and with your tile installer before work begins. The base choices are gathered in Shower Bases and Walls: Roll-In, Seat, Custom Sizes, Thresholds and Wall Systems.
The second video on this page shows how the glue-up tile flange kit makes that joint. The kit includes a roll of the flexible flange material, alcohol surface cleaning cloths, a custom spatula tool and a strip alignment card. The flange is a waterproof adhesive fabric with a siliconized membrane that chemically bonds to 100% silicone sealant, and the video walks through marking the strip position on the walls with the alignment card before the strip goes on, so the seal holds through expansion, contraction and routine floor settling.
Acrylic, Tile and the Tile-Look Panels Side by Side
The table lists the wall options Ella publishes alongside the tile route, using only the figures in Ella's documentation. Where no figure is published, the cell says not listed.
| Option | Published size | Material and finish | What it means for the remodel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acrylic 6-piece kit, Carrara White | 36 inches deep by 60 inches wide by 92 inches tall | Marble-look acrylic, 1/8 inch thick, storage shelves on the left side | A marble look with built-in shelves for a 36 by 60 inch alcove |
| Acrylic 3-piece surround, solid white glossy | 40 inches deep by 60 inches wide by 97 inches tall | Glossy white acrylic with a 1-inch bend at the panel edges | A deeper alcove with the ceiling height for a taller plain white wall |
| Large acrylic wall panels | 98 by 60 inch back walls; 36 to 38 by 96 to 98 inch side walls | Acrylic; thickness not listed | Tall walls covered by single large panels on the back and sides |
| SMC subway panels, 6-piece or 12-piece kit | 36 inches deep by 60 inches wide by 96 inches tall | Sheet molding compound with a subway tile look | A tile look in panel form for a 36 by 60 inch alcove |
| Cultured marble travertine surround, 8, 6 or 4 panels | Back panel 60 inches wide by 96 inches tall; side panels 30, 32, 34 and 36 inches wide | Natural quartz and granite composite with a gel coat surface | Glues over drywall, plaster, painted walls, Durock or existing tile and trims on site |
| Tile on the walls over a custom base | Not listed; one custom base example is 45 inches wide by 60.75 inches long | Tile set by your tile installer; the custom base has a tile flange | Tiled walls meeting a finished acrylic floor, with the joint sealed at the flange |
| Tile over an Ella acrylic base | Not offered | Acrylic is a finished surface that does not accept thinset | Choose a different base rather than covering one |
The differences come down to what is behind the wall today and how closely the room matches a published footprint. The acrylic kits give you a finished wall with no cutting only when the alcove and ceiling match the kit, because they are not cut down on site. The cultured marble surrounds accept trimming and go over existing surfaces, including old tile, so they suit a remodel that keeps the walls in place. Tile on the walls is planned around a custom base with a tile flange and a tile installer, and it stops at the base edge. If your alcove is a 36 by 60 or 40 by 60 and the ceiling clears the kit height, an acrylic kit is the most direct path. If it is not, a trimmable panel or tiled walls are the ways to fit the room.
A Tile Look Without Grout
Two routes give a tile appearance with panel installation. The SMC subway panels, in a 6-piece or 12-piece kit, are sheet molding compound with a subway tile look for a 36 by 60 inch alcove at 96 inches tall. The first video on this page shows groutless tongue and groove PVC Carrara tiles going in over new or existing surfaces: the installer measures, scores and snaps each piece to size, applies adhesive to the back, runs a thin bead of silicone at each joint for a watertight seal, and snaps the pieces into place. Ask your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850 whether that tile is currently offered. The cultured marble travertine surrounds go a step further for a remodel over existing walls, because they can be carried and installed by one person, glue over drywall, plaster, painted walls, Durock or existing tile, and cut with a masonry blade in a standard circular saw, as Where Can I Buy Cultured Marble Shower Walls, and Is Acrylic Better? explains.
Deciding for Your Bathroom
- Measure the alcove depth, width and ceiling height first. An acrylic kit has to match those three figures as built.
- Decide whether the floor will be an Ella acrylic base. If so, the base is the finished floor and only the walls are open to tile.
- If you want tiled walls, ask for a custom base with a tile flange and bring your tile installer into the conversation before ordering.
- If you want a tile look without tile work, compare the SMC subway kit, the groutless PVC tiles and the cultured marble surrounds.
- Ask to see the shower wall sample binders, which show the different colors, and confirm the selection with your Ella dealer or the team at (800) 480-6850.
Walk-in tubs follow a parallel rule. Ella offers tile plans that allow a tub to be tiled, with a tile plan available for tubs without a lid, alongside acrylic bolster rounds and the shower accessories listed in Showers, Shower Screens, and Accessories for Your Ella Walk-in Tub. The custom acrylic shower pans in that line are finished, not tile-ready, which is the same principle as the shower base.
